Cole's place on the Sam Bernard at mid-day and Santa Anna called a halt. March resumed 4 p.m., April 10 after confiscating 20 barrels of sugar and 12 hundred twenty five bushels of corn. Except from Almonte's diary, " Satudrday, Arpil 9 (1836)at 5 a.m. we left San Felipe with the choice companies of Guerro, Matamoros, Mexico and Toluca with fifty cavalry of the Tampico regiment. At half past 12 we arrived at Coll's (Cole's ) farm six and one-half leagues (from San Felipe). Three Americans were seen who took the road to Marion (Columbia) or Orizimbo (Old Fort) and leading to Thompson's Ferry. We found at the farm a family from Lavaca who came by way of the Brazos. Various articles were also found. The husband of the woman was a mulatto, the womand was white. We sent Wilson, the husband, to reconnoiter at Marion, that is the ferry. He did not return. In those days the road from Columbia to San Felipe did not follow the meanders of the Brazos but passed Damons Mound and Mrs. Powell place on Turkey Creek about a mile from the Bernard, thence up by Gabriel Cole's across the prairie and on to San Felipe. Page 72 Chapter VI Settlements on the Bernard pg. 64 ..Only two permanent locations were made by the Three Hundred on the Bernard in Fort Bend County -James Beard, the saddle maker, cook on the schoooner "Lively" and James Scott. The other Bernard locations from Gabriel Cole down to James where the south line of the County leaves the Bernard for the Brazos came later. At the time of the Revolution there was a solid tier of Mexican grants on both sides of the Bernard. Gabriel Cole whose survey lies in the Big Bend of the Bernard at the most north and westerly corner of the county, came from Maine (this is an error, should be South Carolina) in 1832 and got his grant that year. In 1835 he joined the patriot army at Gonzales and was at the "Seige of Bexar" in December. In the following March when Santa Anna's Army was on its way to the Brazos, Gabriel took his family and fled with the runaways. Later we shall see that his humble homestead on the Bernard was the camp site for the Mexican Army on its way to the Jesse Thompson Ferry on the Brazos in April. After the Revolution he continued to live on his land until his death in 1846. (Cole probably lived on the Charles Baird Survey at this time..See Act of Congress. 1839, Vol.3 pg. 40 ) Below Gabe Cole's , Andrew Northington from Kentucky came with his family. On the east side of the Brazos the Countyline began at Bigham's upper line and followed the old line between Harriburg and Brazoria for three leagues, when it took a tangent to the north to a low elm at the head of Bray's Bayou by various turns the upper lines returned to the Brazos along the south line of Churchill Fulshear's league leaving the old sailor outside the County Boundaries. Crossing the river here it went up the west bank ten or more miles to the mouth of Sixteen Mile Creek and thence over to the Bernard at Gabriel Cole's corner. Rowena Texas Jarrell BRYAN was born March, 1869 probably in Caldwell Co., Texas to Smith Callaway Jarrell and Mary Ann Elizabeth Meriah Horn Jarrell. The Jarrell family moved to Coryell County, Texas in the 1870s where both parents passed away in 1885. Rowena moved to Milam County to live with a brother. It was there that she met William Sidney Bryan and married him in 1888. William Sidney BRYAN died in Heidenheimer, Bell Co., Texas in 1902. It is not known where he was buried. Rowena lived in the Temple area the rest of her life. I am curious if anyone has access to county records that would show when they bought and sold property in Bell County. Mary Mullinax was widowed in 1870 or 1880 census. Not even sure if she did have children. Mary was a Dyches, daughter of William Dyches and she was born in 1849. Thanks for your reply. Jackie, The "Cleve" Mullinax family lived in Port Lavaca, Calhoun County, Tx. and were farmers. They were there from the 1930/40s to sometimes after the 1950s. I understand that they re-located to Goliad County when they left Port Lavaca. Cleve and his wife were friends of the family and I think they came originally from Bell County? What area is Pct 3?? He was listed as an invalid on the 1900 census (was 69 years old). His sister Mary Mullinax was living with him. She was born in 1849 and was 51 years old.
