    2. Mary Ann Bartlett
    3. Hello. My name is Mary Ann Bartlett and I live in the Bell County side of Bartlett, TX. The street behind me is Williamson Co. I am interested in documenting my BARTLETT ancestors here in Bell Co. and Wmson Co. I also do look-ups for people out of the county and state. I am talking to a lady that supervises some part of the TEXAS page on RootsWeb in hopes that I can help transcribe some documents to be put online. My BARTLETTs came from VA>KY>MO>TX. My great grandparents arrived in Bell Co. in 1878. His name was John Thomas BARTLETT and wife, Mary Ann (BELL) Bartlett. A "couzin", E.A. Lemmer, compiled and edited the HISTORY OF BELL COUNTY for the Bell Co. Historical Society..or maybe it was the Genealogical Society. He also did a huge 3-volume work on Bartlett. I am on crutches on good days and in my wheelchair on other days. I am a retired teacher...spent my last five years guiding the gifted and talented students at Jarrell, TX. Genealogy brings history to life for me...it is a challenge, too....an exercise in problem solving. Thanks for including me... Ann ---------- From: Bill Bost <longwired@hotmail.com> To: TXBELL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TXBELL-L] What/Who For Bell County Date: Tuesday, March 23, 1999 2:02 PM Howdy All! At latest count, there were some 26 -L list members and about 13 -D TXBELL List members. (Some duplicates where someone is subscribed to both lists). As the TXBELL Listowner, I'd like to ask you to tell your other list members what your interest is in Bell County, and if it's primarily historical, genealogical, or both. I'd also like to know at least what state or country you're from.

    1. [TXBELL-L] WHO WHAT WHY
    2. Hello, I have been watching this list, so it is time I make my presence known. My ansesters were a part of Bell Co and Williamson Co. I was born at Jarrell in 1922. My father was Forest Hubert Keeling. He moved our family to area of Runnels and Tom Green Co. when I was almost 3 years old. My grandfather was Littleton Morgan Keeling. He raised a large family at Jarrell and moved on to Runnels Co. I still have relatives at Temple, Bartlet, and Georgetown. My mother was born in Lampasas Co. She was a Hatley and I am also researching that family. I have lived in Houston, Tx. since 1949. My husband is retired, and we have a Son, Daughter, and Grand daughter living here along with other Keelings. Any information or stories about Keelings or Hatleys will be apreciated. Thanks for allowing me to be a part of this list. Nelda Keeling Mayfield

    2. Hello fellow listers, I live six miles east of Temple. Wayland and I have twin sons. Both are lawyers. One in Nashville,Tenn; the other in Salt Lake City. My interest in this site is the history of Bell County and genealogy. I am researching both sides of our families: LAWLER, QUEEN, DIXON and TIPTON. All of whom came west to Texas in the early 1800s; and decendants still reside in Bell County. Happy hunting, Reba

    3. Richard.. You've got several things going on here that I can perhaps spread around to more people, if you don't mind. The family information looks like it would be suitable for the Biographies Board, and your book information might work on the Looksups part of the Bell County web page. (If you can get lookup okay from the book author/publisher). Would it be okay with you to do that sort of "co-posting" (not removing this post, however?). Our postings to the TXBELL list get archived in a threaded index now (Archives Are At: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/archives/TXBELL-L/) so putting information in both places can take advantage of the two different search indexes used. 1. Re: [TXBELL-L] Obituary of Mary Octavia Swindoll Harris
    2. Faye Elder
    3. The following is the obituary of Mary Octavia Harris: The Temple Times October 14, 1898 Died. Mrs. M. O. Harris died at her residence in this city, Monday, the 10th, of cancerous tumor. Deceased was 59 years old and had been a member of the Baptist church since 1876. She lived an exemplary christian life and died a glorious death, conscious almost to the last moment. Se felt the sting of death on Friday and called all her children and near relatives around her and spoke to them such words of comfort and consolation as none but a christian in the full consciousness of a life well spent could utter. All of her children, three sons- Thomas, Madison and Pressley, and three daughters- Mrs Estelle Keach, Mrs George F. Kyle, and Miss Octavia Harris were present, together with a brother and a nephew. In the language of her pastor, "there was nothing in the death of sadness save the brief separation." For this bereavement the whole community join in sympathy with the bereaved. You may put this obituary on the Bell County Obit page, if you wish. This obit was sent to me by the Temple Daily Telegram. The Hewett Funeral Home had nothing on Mary Octavia Harris. I am assuming that the deceased lived in the city of Temple. I have written to the County Clerk to see if any records exist in the nature of a Will or Deed. If these records exist, I may gain further insight from them. I do not know the name of the funeral home, the church, or the burial place. In 1894, Mary Octavia's son, Madison Harris married Hattie Wilkinson. The minister who performed the ceremony was John Furgsan. The spelling of his last name is very difficult to read, it is possible that his middle initial is "F" and the last name something that starts with an "L" or "U." This marriage may be a clue as to what church Mary Octavia attended. I would like the address of the First Baptist Church in Temple. I think that might be a good start. I rather doubt that the year of 1876 is correct in the obit because she was in Williamson Co. TX in 1880, Perhaps that date corresponds with her joining the "Baptists" and not a Temple Baptist church. Any help in locating more information on Mary Octavia Harris would be appreciated. Thanks, Faye

    3. The museum site looks great. Thanks for all your hard work. I plan on being in the area next week, I don't know if I'll have time to drop by but if I do I think the museum would be an interesting stop. Since you are the new coordinator, can you tell me anything about locating old funeral home records (1898)for Temple? I have a copy of an obit but I can't find a burial spot. I also need to know if the Baptist church that was there at that time is still in existance. If so what is its name and address? I have not had very good luck in searching Temple. Maybe you will be the one to make my luck change. Thanks, Faye

Can you provide some details? - Is there a name to go with the 1898 funeral home records? - Is the obit on the Obituaries Board.. we could see if there's a burial place with the person's name? - Is the name of the Baptist church you're looking for in Temple or Belton, or near Temple (there are several with late 1800 dates? Memorial Baptist Church (1892-Memorial Mission Chapel); First Baptist Church of Temple (1874- Pleasant Hill Baptist Church) perhaps? I can provide the address or phone number for either/both of these, if you'd like to try them (they may even have an email address)? The Bell County Museum has a book by two members (Joe and Dorothy Button) that has something like 211 entries for Bell County historical markers, two of which are for these churches. I hope to have a list added to the Bell County Museum home page that has other genealogically-useful publications they have for purchase, in the near future. Lots of surnames in almost all of them! I've gotten maps for Bell County from both the US Geological Service and from the Texas Department of Transportation, usually with a least some cemeteries and other features of genealogical/historical interest. The Bell County page also has some links to other sources for Texas (and Bell County) history. Maybe these might be of help as well, Faye. Some of the TXBELL list folks may have some information..
