Hello Listers! My interest in Bell County lies with my great great grandparents: John C. ROUNTREE and Ella (WILLIAMS) ROUNTREE, both reported to be buried at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Temple. Ella's brother, Isom WILLIAMS, is also supposed to buried somewhere in Temple, TX. I have been able to find information on the ROUNTREEs but am having a lot of difficulty with the WILLIAMS, perhaps due to its being such a common surname. Should anyone be familiar with the Temple Cemetery Company (ca.1930), please let me know. I'd like to obtain any records available for Isom WILLIAMS but have been unable to determine if TCC has gone out of business or been subsumed by a larger cemetery. Thank you for any assistance, Robin
Found your Nancy Allen in the old part of the Bartlett Cemetery...got pictures for you if you want them. There are other Allens around her...got pictures of that. I know where their farm was west of Bartlett. The cemetery is on land owned by a friend of mine...or it did belong to her and she took care of it for a long time. I will get out there and look for Moses Allen...and get her to ask around about any graves on private land in the area. The stones are in fairly good repair...the fences around the other Allens are rusty and falling down. I don't know if they belong to you or not. Are you interested in this information at all? Mary Ann, Thanks. But these aren't my HOODs, at least I don't think they are. Take care. Vickie Elam White
Looking for information about Onslow Marshall HOOD and his brother, John Erskine HOOD. They both appeared on the 1880 Bell Co. TX census: Onlsow on pg. 457 (or it is his son Marshall) and John on pg. 407. Could someone possibly look at these census entries and tell me what they are? Any "cousins" out there? Vickie Elam White
I found your Moses ALLEN in the Vol. I of the Story of Bell Co., TX. I have transcribed the notes and will send them to you as soon as I return from running some errands. There is a picture of one of his daughters and her husband...if you would like me to snail mail you the page, send me your snail mail address. Moses ALLEN was in several counties before his death...that is all in there...I also have a copy of the Jury List they are talking about...I will dig it out of the files and send you a copy of that if you want it. Sure hope this will help...haven't looked for STORY yet...will when I get back home. Yes, Ann, I have exchanged data with Teddy Noye. She tells you are a sweetheart and I see you are. The Lawler Cemetery; my Granny Allie (Queen) Lawler and family are buried there. Reuben Queen's son Sam Queen and wife are buried there. We visit quite often including a Lawler caravan on Saturday of our annual Lawler Family reunion. Wayland and I put poinsettas on all our family graves( about 50) every year at Christmas time. It is a steep up-hill to the gate . Take someone with you. Reba
Something you all may also want to check in BELL and Wmson Cos. is a file called "UNRECOVERED DOCUMENTS". This file lists all original documents not claimed...marriage lisc., etc. I can check the file for you. Wmson Co. has kept theirs safe in a vault and the one I saw, dated in the early 1800's, looked like it had been issued that very day. I think every county in the US does this but sometimes, even among experienced researchers, it is a little-known fact. If you find one belonging to an ancestor...in Wmson Co....you have to send in a request and the fee for mailing and a photo copy of your driver's lisc. The clerk at Wmson Co. said that since I do research to supplement my retirement income, that she would accept these requests and fees and copy of driver's lisc. from me......however, I would much prefer to find out if you have a document to be collected and then send you the form and let you send the items directly to the courthouse. You just have to request the document and give as much information about the persons as you can......or, they can send you an uncertified or certified copy if you would prefer to have that. I don't mind doing lookups if you will send me the names and what information you have and then wait patiently. Instead of paying me for copy/mailing, I would prefer if you would return the courtsey to someone with ancestors in the county in which you live. I will send you an uncertified copy and a form from the county office so that you can order a certified copy...those are usually more expensive...anywhere from $5 to $10. I will put the names you have mentioned in your posts in my Research Notebook and will look for them the next time I get to the courthouse. In case you would like to request a lookup from the Wmson. Co. Clerk, here is the addy - you can request a form: Nancy E. Rister County Clerk Williamson County P.O. Box 18 Georgetown, TX 78627-0018 Birth Certificate: Fee $11.00 Death Certificate: Fee $9.00 - Add'l $3.00# Requested Marriage Certificate: Fee $6.00 for a certified copy $1.00 for an uncertified, plain copy Military Discharge: Fee $6.00 To get a death certificate for someone for genealogy research in this county, the person has to have been dead for at least 50 years. If the person has been dead for less than 50 years, you can contact the clerk's office and discuss it with them. Hope this helps someone. I don't have a form from Bell Co. As soon as I get one I will send the information the to list. Ann Bartlett ----------
My primary interest in Bell County is in tracing ancestors, Lindemann, Lange and Bartosh. I also have roots in Williamson County and have relatives in both counties. Andrew LINDEMANN immigrated to Galveston in 1855 from Germany. He moved to Houston, then on to Austin County, where he helped built the first cotton gin. He served as a Confederate Soldier and moved to Illinois after the war. He returned in 1866 and married Anna Schiller in Nelsonville, Austin Co., Tx. In 1882 he moved to Bell County and was charter member of the St. Johns Luthern Church. +Andreas LINDEMANN, b. 21 July 1812, Prussia, d. Sept. 3 1900 m. Sophia ? ++Andrew G. My name is Joseph William Love Jr. (actually the 3rd). I live in Galveston. My father Joseph William Love was born in Bartlett in 1894, but grew up in Salado and Belton. His great grandfathers John Love, Blake Forehand, John Coffey Caskey, and Thomas Powe Chapman all settled near Matsler Community near Florence between 1851 and 1853. They bought adjoining land for farming and ranching. I have a lot of genealogy info on these families which I would share, and would like to have any info others have on these families.
Howdy TXBELL and BEAUCHAMP Listers!! The following was posted to another list I'm on, and I thought you might find the reminder about verifying your sources to be of interest, and helpful. Bill Bost TXBELL Listowner BEAUCHAMP Listowner Etc... *****Start Of Post**** Dear Fellow Researchers, In the last couple of days, I have recieved many e-lets which have embraced my advice about going to source documentation. Thank you for your approbation. Some of them have voiced a new-found disdain for the use of compiled and extracted data. An example snippet follows: >To think, I was going to buy some these items. From now on I'll >put my money into retrieving the actual documents. Just to temper my earlier words, somewhat, let me point out that compiled and extracted materials are EXTREMELY valuable in the sense that they point you to the sources from which you must obtain your primary and secondary evidence. You may find an entry, in a census index, that you think is connected to your ancestors. Certainly, you must go to the original record and obtain a copy of it for your records, but the INDEX is valuable, too, as it saved you from the hours and hours (often DOZENS of hours) spent looking at every census record in a county trying to find that ancestor, as many of us have had to do. In fact, it's often the index entry that even lets you know what COUNTY to look in. The same concept applies to other extracts and compilations. I have found such works as Everette J. Filgate's "Bovee and Bovie Families in America" unbelievably helpful, as they have taken YEARS off of my research time by giving me the information I need to quickly pinpoint individuals of interest and to go straight to the source of the evidence to obtain the documentation I need. In the case of the Filgate book, alone, I have been able to find over 60 individuals, all directly related to my lines, and to find the detailed vital records, land grant records, probate records, and other evidence simply because I had the extracted materials to work with and now knew the names, presumed relationships and locations of these people. My article wasn't meant to discourage you from using such sources; just to remind you to use them as an extremely important and valuable STARTING point for your research. Once these materials have pointed you in the right direction, you must follow up using the traditional methods I discussed earlier. Howdy Listers... This came up on another list I'm on, and I thought ya'll might like to have it... Bill Bost TXBELL Listowner Etc. *****Start***** Submitting a Query Sat, 06 Mar 1999 09:59 From: Jim & Mary Pat Young <myoung@icok.net>To: DILLON-L@rootsweb.com To make your query work harder for you... keep in mind the old rules of news reporting and include as many of the following as possible: WHO: State the names of people as completely as you can. WHAT: Try to limit your query to one or two specific events or bits of information. Post another one or more later with additional questions rather than load all your questions into one. In this way each of your questions will stand out and get attention. WHEN: Dates are important, if you don't know the day, month and year try to put in a period (1790s, late 1800s etc.) WHERE: Mention the location in the body of the query. Include a more specific location if you can. WHY: Why are you searching for this(these) individual(s)? Describe your connection to him/her. HOW: How your query appears will often get subscriber's attention. Check spelling, grammar and format. Apply the KISS system: Keep It Simple Simple. SUBJECT FIELD: To get the most from your query, place the SURNAME, LOCATION, YEAR in the subject field. Remember ! ! ! ! Many subscribers belong to multiple list servers; therefore, many go through their mail looking at subject fields only. Unfortunately, messages with "My Family", "My Line", "My Grandfather", "My JONES", etc., as subjects are deleted without ever being opened. REPETITION: Once you have an acceptable looking query, save it and update it as necessary. Use it again about once a quarter to touch base with new members. Also, you may use it on web sites that accepts queries. REMEMBER: Your goal is to get information. A list server (discussion group) such as this is an excellent means for helping you reach it. Make the query work! By following these recommendations, your query stands a better chance of being read and you may make that great contact that you need. Hi, My name is Nancy and I live in Hemet, CA (south of Los Angeles and Riverside). I have had relatives in the Bell County area since the 1800's. From my research there have been at least four generations that have lived there on and off. Names I am researching include: Denson, Harris, Wilmeth, Sewell and Holder. Any help would be very much appreciated. I am having particular trouble tracking the Harris side. Good luck to all of us! These lists are great sources of information. Nancy
