Howdy Jody! You've got quite a bit of connection with Bell County... I'll copy your query also over to the Query Board of the Bell County Genealogy page, as those are indexed differently than messages on this list, and you might get some different responses. Would you like to be subscribed to the TXBELL list? I haven't found other places for Bell County local history books, but there are some at the Bell County Museum. (I did a quick check of amazon.com and they did have one of the Bell County history books, although I've forgotten which one.) Check the Bookstore page of the Museum website at http://www.vvm.com/~museum Stephanie Turnham, the Director, has several different titles that are of value for Bell County local history. Howdy Listers!! I've just forwarded to the Texas Genealogy Archives coordinator for Bell County, Kay Bradley, a file of graduating seniors for Temple High School, 1925. It's in plain text format, isn't very long, and is something that some researcher can use. The submitter took just a little time and effort, and has created something that will be used for research far into the future. Please consider what you may already have as information at-hand, and put it in plain text format, then send it as an attachment to email to Kay Bradley (kbradley@flash.net), for incorporation into the Archives for Bell County. All sorts of "people information" is of use, as you've no doubt found in looking for your own traces. You never know what may furnish just the lead needed by a researcher to help track down that elusive ancestor. Filling up the Archives for Bell County is something we all can do.. it doesn't have to just be one person. If you're not sure if something is ready for the Archives, let me see it and I'll give you an idea, or ask Kay Bradley. I'm continuing to refine a list of cemeteries for Bell County.. getting out duplicates, finding cemetery names we may have missed, trying to get better directions, putting in Lat/Long or UTM coordinates, trying to figure out which of the Fort Hood removals are Bell County's and not Coryell's, and so forth. If you'd like to have a copy of the current working copy, please email me privately and I'll attach one back to you. Many eyes looking at the info may help spot errors of commission or omission that much faster, so a good, viable product can be sent up to the Archives to replace the previous draft already there. I've gotten BCHC page and WBGS page ideas from one lister so far.. any more come to mind? Oh, yes... don't forget to do your taxes... like I'm doing instead of genealogy and web page building... :) (Did you know those little smiley faces are called emoticons, and there are web sites on the internet to tell you what they mean? :)) ... that's a smiley with a double chin.. Hello everyone, I wanted to update the Bell County list on some wonderful news. I have been looking for a Luther Curtis Latham in Bell County. However it seems that my elders minds slipped a bit on his name. It is/was LYCURGUS. The family first shows up in Bell County in 1880 census records. Here is the new information on our Latham's from Bell County. Any insight on this family would be wonderful. Thanks Again Debbie 1. LYCURGUS1 LATHAM (ROLLY P.A, CORNELIUSB) was born 1847 in Bibb County Alabama, and died in Holland Texas Bell County. He married MARY CATHERINE FULLER Abt. 1870. Dear Listers... You may not be aware that the TXBELL listowner, or the Bell County Coordinator/webmaster, is NOT the only person who can submit information to the Texas Genealogy Archives. Take a look at the site for Bell County, at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/bell/belltoc.htm ... and you'll see that several people have already submitted data, and the Archive Manager, Kay Bradley, would like more! The site for information about formatting submissions can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tips.htm You may very well have information that could be of use to other Bell County researchers, and only need to prepare it for submission... and submit it! We may, as TXBELL listers, want to undertake a project for the list of taking parts of different materials of interest to world-wide genealogy, and transcribing our portion of it, then turning it in to the listowner or Bell County Coordinator (me, at the moment) for compiling, then submitting our compiled work to the Archives. I'd copy some sections of, for example, our current project to put as many abstracts of cemetery listings on the web, mail them to interested listers, let them put them into their computers in TXT form, email the results back to me as attachments (or send them directly to the Archives), and we'd fill up that part pretty quick. We could do lots of indices that way. If you check the Archives page I mentioned above, you'll see that people have already submitted things like high school student lists, indices for some land records, a list of Confederate veterans, some Belton Journal entries, and so forth... all by volunteers like you and I, who take time to input the information they have into a format that can be readily be uploaded to the Archives. James M. LATHAM b.1861 Al. d.1950 Bomarton, Baylor Co Tx. Married Molly B. ARTHUR in Bell Co 1882. Molly was the d/o Matthew "Tolbert" ARTHUR & Sarah QUEENER. 2. Mary Frances LATHAM b.1864 Al married Robert "Bob" PIERCE. They are buried in the Bomarton Cem. Its been told that Mary & Bob were 1st cousins. 3.Lazarus L. LATHAM b.1870 Tx.married Roxie ?? They are buried at Grove Hill Cemetery in Dallas. 4.Robert Tillman LATHAM b.1873 Tx. married Annie FORT. They are buried in Bomarton Cem. 5.Matilda A LATHAM ca 1875 Tx. married Chas or Charles FIELDING. I have been told that they lived in Dallas. 6. George A. LATHAM ca 1878 Tx. No other info. I was told he just disapeared. I have not found William in any census other that the 1880 Bell, and I have not been able to link him with any Latham family that was in Ga or Al. And it is very possible that his full name was George William Latham. Any help would be appreciated. Robin Adams Latham

Suggestions: 1. E.A. has put the original of the Story of Bell County, I think, in the Belton Library. Perhaps it would be possible to ask people of Bell Co. to check these originals, maybe get copies of their specific family part, and update and add to the information so their could be a second printing. 2. Get volunteers to be in the library and county records building on certain days to receive requests for information over the internet? 2B. To have someone that these requests are sent to for collection and for distribution to volunteers who will research the records and give the "collector" the information to be returned...or to answer the requests themselves. 3. I have noticed that many of the requests I have gotten for data from Williamson and Bell Co. cross the county lines...including Milam, Lampasas, Coryell, etc. If there is a way that research could be coordinated among persons in all counties ... well, it just seems that since we were all in Milam county at one time and then in Bell and Williamson and then in counties like Coryell, we stand on ancestrial common ground...and could help each other. 4. Collect folk tales from the folks of Bell Co. Like when my great grandparents arrived in what was to be Bell Co., they were on their way to South Texas to join up with their friends, the KINGS, to start a cattle ranch and horse ranch. My ggrandmother was about five feet tall, depending on who told the story, and had had to bury one child on the trail, fight off Indians and outlaws, not to mention the hardship of the trip. My ggrandfather was about six foot five and rode a TN Walker. He had to stand up in his saddle to see over the Johnson grass. Their children would go ahead of the wagon and oxen hacking the Johnson grass down to make it easier to get the wagon through. At night, they had to walk around and around a spot to beat down the grass and then cut and clear a spot for a fire. My great grandmother, on the morning they were to push on south, crawled upon the tailgate of the wagon so she could get eyeball-to-eyeball with my ggrandfather, put her hands on her hips and told him, "John Thomas, you want to go on south to meet up with the Kings, you go right ahead. I'm tired and the children are tired and we plan to stay right here." My grandfather said she had just gotten through cleaning the big black iron skillet and she had it in one hand. She was known to out-ride and out-shoot most men but that skillet was her weapon of choice and she had put many an Indian and outlaw to sleep with it. They stayed in Bartlett. There are stories about a man and a woman crossing Donahoo and Indian Creeks and being drowned...supposedly on the nights of the full moon you can hear them calling for help. I am sure there are lots of stories to be gathered. 5. Find out the names some of the towns here went by early on...I have mentioned to several people that live in Holland that at first it was called Mountain Home and they have no knowledge of this...and they lived there all their lives. 6. Get volunteers to go out looking for old cemeteries and document who is buried there...especially those on private property. Update some of the other cemetery list, done last in the 1960's in some cases, and publish them on the web page. 7 Need to put a list of addies so people can contact county libraries, genealogy groups, records offices, etc for information. Supply copies of forms for requesting copies of documents from the county records...with costs. 8. Ask people to bring old photos and documents to a central place for scanning...or even send copies to you for scanning....I wish we could get all the pictures E.A. used again to copy....the copy machines have come a long way since the Hist. Commission did that. Maybe you could eventually have a Bell County Gallery. 9. Have a section of maps of Bell Co. when it was part of Milam and before Coryell was cut out of it. 10. Transcribe the whole two volumes of THE STORY OF BELL COUNTY, TEXAS onto the site. BTW, can you still buy copies of the two volumes of THE STORY OF BELL COUNTY, TEXAS? I would like to purchase them if I can. Hope I have not over-stepped my bounds. Howdy Listers!! Mary Ann Bartlett <bartlett@vvm.com> Asked: How do you join this Bell County Historical Commission? MaryAnn Bartlett (personal address deleted) I joined by attending several Commission meetings, at the invitation of several folks with whom I'd been doing cemetery inventorying. I requested an application to become a Commission member from the BCHC Chair, and it was forwarded to the Bell County Commissioner's Court for approval. There was no application fee, and only a simple form to complete. I joined to have some sort of "official" connection to the BCHC when we were out roaming in people's areas and cemeteries on a BCHC project! Other than that, I wouldn't have been interested... but would have still gone to the meetings. I think Bell County history is interesting, and the Commission is responsible for preservation of the County history, and for educating the public about it. Worthwhile, I think. The Commission meets the fourth Monday (Ann, I think I told you the third Monday... sorry) of every month at the County Courthouse Annex Conference Room (while the Courthouse is being renovated). We may stay there after the Courthouse reopens, so it may move around. Often you can find a notice in the paper about the next meeting. The Chair is Haroldene Early, from Troy (nobody seems to have a valid telephone number for Haroldene, either!) :) The Commission has lots of things going on... but the public isn't aware of much of it. Probably the most visible project is the assistance in documentation for historical markers. A Tennessee Valley marker was one of the most recent ones! There are several knowledgeable local historians who are Commission members and meeting attendees, and I hope to provide a list of BCHC members and their areas of interest very soon. Did this answer your question? Liked your suggestions and ideas, and hope others have some as well to share. I'm noting everything, and will see what can be used right away, and what may have to wait a while for volunteers or time... Thanks again. Oh... if you've not responded on the Who/Where question, please send your info... I'd like to have some idea of who is interested in what and why for reference purposes as listowner. Ann ---------- From: BADOVINAC3@aol.com To: TXBELL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TXBELL-L] TENNESSEE VALLEY Date: Saturday, March 27, 1999 10:11 AM Hi John, I would appreciate any information you could find. My interests mainly concern the Garner/Herring lines--but I am beginning to think they're all related somehow or another to the other families who were in the Valley, such as the Allens and Drapers. Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you! As you said, if I haven't heard from you in a few days, I'll contact you.
