    3. 2 Mary Ann Griffin b: 1825 in AL ... +Thomas Duncan b: February 12, 1821 in TN m: December 18, 1845 in TX ================================================= I found, in THE STORY OF BELL COUNTY, TEXAS, on page 481 -482, a long discussion of Thomas DUNCAN who married Mary Ann Briffin. The bd for Thomas in this discussion is February 21, 1821. All the other data matches to your person. Since I am transcribing family group data from the book for Bill, I will transcribe this one in a bit...have to run an errand for my mom. I have not looked in the Vol. II for Moses Griffin but will. There are 8 pages of Duncans, beginning with Allen Duncan...On page 484, there are two small pictures of Claude Earl and Juanita GRIFFIN Duncan. Will get to work on this later... MA Bartlett Thomas Duncan was murdered in Bell County in 1865...says, "Thomas Duncan was a victim of the political upheaval and lawlessness spawned by the issues and aftermath of the Civil War. He was murdered in Bell County in 1865. Mary Ann Griffin Duncan died in Bell County on June 28, 1869." (Story of Bell County, Texas; Bell Co. Historical Commission; page 482) Submitted by: M.L. I haven't checked the 1910 or 1920 yet. If you have any information or connection to this family would love to hear from you. Thanks Pat

    3. One other note...Milam County Courthouse burned many years ago and there was a great loss of records. I am not telling you that it is useless to search in Milam...some records were saved and some were restored....I don't remember when it burned...maybe Bill can tell us. Why is Milam so important to Bell Co. history and records......remember, Bell was Milam County originally. 3. Howdy, Listers! In talking with members of the West Bell Genealogical Society, and the Bell County Historical Commission, it seemed like a good idea to *gell* my suggestion about a concerted effort to send material to the TexGenWeb Archives, and to put information in the WBGS and BCHC web page archives. Projects begun this year, and earlier, seem to be obliged to have the term *2000* in them somewhere, so I'm suggesting that the TXBELL listers participate in a WEB2000 project, along with anyone else I can cajole into helping. So, when you see references to WEB2000, that's what I'm talking about. It isn't yet clear how to divvy up some of the cemetery lists, to start with, but I appreciate the expressions of willingness to help... so hold those open, please. Concurrently, I'm looking to firm up the *warm fuzzy* I presently have about putting the Bell County Historical Commission publications on-line, on the BCHC page, the WBGS page, and/or in the TexGenWeb Archives. (The BCHC gave an okay, but I want to check with the editors as a courtesy, first.) So, WEB2000... we'll see what TXBELL can do with it.. I've mentioned before that anyone can send genealogy-related material about Bell County to the TexGenWeb Archives.. and please do so. If you're not sure about formatting, send your proposed submission to me and I'll see if it's ready to go. I think once you get the hang of it, it goes pretty well. TXBELL listers probably already have suitable material, from your own family history.. things like wills, or pension records, or obituaries, and so forth. Just be careful not to include material from copyrighted sources, unless you have permission. Questions? 3. Good Morning, Listers... Let me hasten to correct an error I've probably made respecting the content of *The Story Of Bell County* volumes, in that while the volumes in large part (pages 277-1032) contain family histories (biographies), the first part of Vol I contains all sorts of other local history items. Lots of short narrative histories of Bell County communities, for example. I'd hate to do the work a major disservice! Bill Bost Listowner Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    3. Howdy All.. I visited the Bell County Museum today and was able to purchase copies of both the 2-volume set *Story Of Bell County*, and the Tyler book, *History of Bell County*. They're both hardback items, so they're not cheap! The *History* is written from a 1936 general date, and the *Story of Bell County* contains biographies of Bell County citizens. If you'd like lookups from these two resources, volunteers are listed on the Lookups page at the Bell County Genealogy & History site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbell If I ever get oriented adequately on the contents, I'll try to help with information as well. I think I've seen some responses on the Query Board for Bell County citing one or the other of these references. A reminder, again, to post your queries to BOTH the Query Board at the Bell County site, as well as here. They are indexed separately, and using both places improves your chances of a response. 1. [TXBELL-L] Wow - what a nice write up in rootsweb review

    3. They left all the names out.....we can only guess. If any one hasn't seen it -- Vol. 2, No. 13, 31 March 1999 (second Blue Moon of 1999) had a really nice success story and all 'blamed' on this list and a particular researcher. BACK ISSUES OF ROOTSWEB REVIEW are available for download from: <ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/review/>. Bill, I'm glad you canvassed people and agreed to go with surnames. Laurel

    3. There are STOKES still living here in Bartlet and there is a family plot where several are buried in the Bartlett Cemetery. I gathered information on them for a relative that lives in NC, I believe. I have a copy of The Story of Bell County, TX by the Historical Commission and it has STOKES, BIGHAM and some of the other names you mentioned. Belton Library has a copy of the two volumes as well as the roughly-bound original copies. I also have a copy of the 3-volume set about Bartlett, Bell Co., TX that E.A.Lemmer compiled. It has information about many of the early families not only of Bartlett, but also of Bell Co. These three volumes are not indexed so it takes time to read through them and find all entries of any given surname. The Bartlett Library has a set of these and Belton Library may have a set. I know a Mrs. Dillard in Temple that has done extensive research of the DILLARD line and some of the collateral lines. The next time I see her, I will pass your message on to her. She does not have a computer so I may have to get her snail mail address and send it to you. Hope this helps. You've got quite a bit of connection with Bell County... I'll copy your query also over to the Query Board of the Bell County Genealogy page, as those are indexed differently than messages on this list, and you might get some different responses. Would you like to be subscribed to the TXBELL list? I haven't found other places for Bell County local history books, but there are some at the Bell County Museum. (I did a quick check of amazon.com and they did have one of the Bell County history books, although I've forgotten which one.) Check the Bookstore page of the Museum website at http://www.vvm.com/~museum Stephanie Turnham, the Director, has several different titles that are of value for Bell County local history.
