Howdy TXBELL Listers.. Forwarded from a list subscriber, from another list, FWIW. Of interest in developing preservation information for our Bell County cemeteries, and trying not to harm the stones therein. If you've found cemetery- or tombstone-specific books or sites of use in getting information about care, that we can use in trying to catch up, or get ahead, of cemetery preservation in Bell County, would you share it? David Casto does a particulary spectacular job of trying to keep up with cemetery cleaning, county-wide, but actually getting headstones repaired and memorial damage fixed PROPERLY is difficult. David can always use volunteers, if you're interested in the physical clearing and recovery end of things about cemeteries. He primarily cleans up cemeteries for which no cemetery association is identified. There are so many conflicting guides about headstone cleaning. Cleaning stones, as is pointed out below, seems to be safest with the water and soft-bristle brush approach. If you'd like some interesting reading on cemetery preservation, recording, etc., the Association for Tombstone Studies, the Connecticut Tombstone Network (I think I've got that right), and even our TexGenWeb Tombstone Transcription Project, have got information at their sites. It can be so sad to see headstones or markers damaged, no longer legible, or whatever, and realize that individual's history is probably gone forever... along with someone's "connection" with the here-and-now. Bill Bost Bell County Coordinator ===== Forwarded message==== For yall's FYI files. I don't know these people nor do I have a vested interest in a water company or a soft-bristle brush company...and I have nothing against WINK or winking....q;-). I do have a vested interest in helping to avoid damage to headstones....if you think it is acceptable for the list, will you post it to the list, please? Think I will see if I can get in touch with some companies that make these things and ask them what is the best way to preserve the stones. Hello everyone, I would like to ask a big favor. If anyone gets to Milam County to check marriage records and has some spare time. Please check and see if there is a L. C. Latham married to a M. C. Fuller the year would be around 1871 or very late 1870. We have checked the Bell County records with no luck, so I am thinking maybe they were married across the line in Milam County instead. They were not married in Alabama as far as we can tell. Thanks in Advance for any and all help Debbie

Bill, just went through all the sites you sent...the Bell County stuff...it's a super place to visit. Can you imagine the treasure of it when we get more and more information uploaded!! Makes me want to work harder. Great job...enjoyed looking around...and thanks for allowing me to be part of it. For The TXBELL List, and others.... an update on what's happening in the Bell County web pages... The following cemetery lists have been posted on the Bell County Archives: Antioch (Heidenheimer Negro) Bartlett City Donahoe Heidenheimer Negro Holland Pleasant Hill Post Oak Proctor Resthaven Rock Hollow St John's Lutheran Volo Sent up today for inclusion in the Archives are: Boone-Hamlin Blacburn Eulogy (Carpenter('s)) Garden of Memories Goode Griffin Henington Hodge Hunt Family Immanuel Lutheran Lancaster Live Oak Maxdale Mayberry McBryde Mitchell These are older lists from Polly Peaks-Elmore compilation in Bell County Cemeteries. There are more to follow. The Archives are at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/bell/belltoc.htm The Bell County Historical Commission (and, temporarily giving space to the Sesquicentennial Committee) web page actually has some content on it now... a trial effort to see what looks okay where, and how it connects, and so forth.... some of the page links aren't straight yet!! The Bell County Historical Commission web page is at: www.rootsweb.com/~txbchc Lastly, biographies from The Story Of Bell County (which MaryAnn Bartlett has been working hard on) are being posted to the Bell County History and Genealogy Biographies Board. Well worth checking on from time to time, and there are already some going there. It's at: cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Bell? Or you can go through the Bell County Genealogy and History home page. The WEB2000 volunteers have several cemeteries out for typing, and some of their products are among those on the Archives page!! Thanks to all who are contributing, and using, the work. Bill Bost Bell County Coordinator _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. I am NOT going to spend any more long periods of time carefully putting this information up to send! These darn computers mess it all up. I looked at some of the family information I transcribed and it looked like I did not know how to write a sentence!!!!! I want you all to know that I am a retired teacher and that I did my Bachelor's and Master's and part of my PhD in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Special Education, Athletic Training and ENGLISH!!! I taught classes of English...creative writing, composition, etc......it is the computer that messes up my sentence structure! ARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHH I am going by the Volo Cemetery for pictures, the Hillcrest Cemetery for pictures...Rountree...and try to get by the record office in Belton to search some....if I can get someone to lift the books for me...I want to take the names you all have sent and first check the "Unrecovered" documents. These are such things as birth certificates and marriage certificates. Most county courthouses keep the unclaimed originals in their vaults and they look as new as the day they were prepared. In the early days our ancestors may have lived so far away from the county seat that they never got there to collect the documents. For example, people in Bartlett had to travel at least a day and a half or two days to get to Belton...plus in the very early days, they were actually in Milam County....sometimes they were killed by Indians or outlaws or became ill and died before they could pick up the documents. If there is one of your ancestors there, I will let you know so you can request it...in Williamson County you have to request it in writing and include a photcopy of your driver's lisc. I cannot collect the document for you...I can, however, get a copy for you. I asked about the copy of the driver's lisc. and they told me that that information is for county records only and not for public distribution. If you request and show your proof first, you get the document. If anyone else asks, they are told another family member claimed it and showed proof. The clerk said that you could put an address or email addy on your letter if you wanted to so other relatives could contact you. Next week I plan to go to Coryell and Lampasas Cos. to do some looking. Most of my time will have to be spent searching for a QUEEN family. I have been working for a lady in California for a couple of years now...a friend is going with me to help lift books and copy information and get copies. If I find someone you mentioned, I will get a plain copy of the document and snail mail it to you along with a request form for you to use to get a certified copy. If I were you all, especially any of you new to this work, I would stay with the plain copies...usually only a dollar. If, for some reason you need a certified copy later, you can order it. Some of the certified copies can be upwards of $25 in come counties. If you want me to get you a certified copy, I can....but I would like for you to send me a note snail mail requesting I get you the certified copy of Clem Kadiddlehopper and Mrs. Kadiddlehopper for your genealogical files. State that you are a descendent of the Kadiddlehoppers as they are your gggggggggggggggggrandparents. If you live in another state it might be good to mention that. MA Bartlett P.O. Box 606 Bartlett, TX 76511 I will do all I can to help yall.....I have been trying for several years to get some help with my BARTLETTs and BELLs in MO and no one has answered. I know how hard it is to get to other states and even to other counties in a state. Some of us here in Texas have to drive as high as 800 miles one way to get to a county in North or West Texas. I did make a 1600 mi. trip for a lady several years ago to get information on a person she was sure was her ancestor. It turned out he was not her ancestor. I learned something about the land records .... those in Texas that have Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, Moses Austin, and Samuel May Williams (McKinney & Williams), these are in the early 1800s...before there were any counties...when TX still belonged to Mexico. Some of your ancestors during this time were actually Mexican Citizens and may have had to get a Passport to come into TX. Also, if you see a name listed and get to the ABS (abstract no.) and it has 999999....that means that the person did not complete the purchase or sale of the land...or never showed up to claim his/her papers. Women's names...I was told that women that had lost their husbands on the way could buy land; or if their husband died here, they legally got title to the land. There are never any dates on those records on internet but if you go to the land office, the dates and other details are in most of the documents. As soon as you have time to go to the Web Page for Bell county, check out the History of Bell Co....it will help you understand how the counties evolved and why you may need to search other counties...especially if your ancestors lived on the far sides of the counties close to county lines. A bit of History again... He came to Bell County |with his parents in 1851. On November 18, 1861, he enlisted for Civil War |service at Belton as a private in Company F, 6th Texas Infantry, under |Captain H.E. Bradford. Later, he was promoted to corporal and then to |sergent. A regiment was organized at Victoria, with Colonel R.R. Garland |in |command. | |In spring 1862 the company marched to Arkansas Post, Arkansas and arrived |about September 1. He fought in the Battle of Arkansas Post and was |captured January 11, 1863, when the Confederate forces were defeated. He |was taken to Camp Butler Prison, near Springfield, Illinois, but escaped |and |joined the Missouri Volunteers, North Missouri, and was first lieutenant in |Captain Marion West's company. | |After the war, Chalk received a law degree at Lebanon, Tennessee. On |August |3, 1870, he married Anne Margaret Butcher in Comanche, Iowas, where she had |been born on August 16, 1851. Her family moved there from Randolph County, |West Virginia. Her parents were Edward G. Butcher and Sarah Ann Wilson of |Virginia. They were descendants of Honorable John Hart, who signed the |Declaration of Independence; Sir Warham St. Leger, a member of Virginia |House of Burgesses in 1609; and Governor Richard Bennett of Virginia. |After |their marriage, Robert Lewis Chalk practiced law in Belton for many years. |He was a Mason and the family were members of the Methodist Church. | |Children of this marriage were: Sarah Minna who married William Thomas |Scott II, then Harry Hyman; George Otis who married Mary Elizabeth Nunn; |Robert Lee; William Edward; and Lelia Blanche who married Robert Lee |Dalton. Mrs. Anne Butcher Chalk died December 25, 1891 and her marked |grave |is in South Belton Cemetery. | |On January 21, 1897, at Killeen, Chalk married Mrs. Sophia Walker Manning, |born January 22, 1862, in Bastrop. After their marriage, Chalk was mayor |of |Killeen for several years. One daughter, Nora Ethel, was born of this |union. She married William Frederick Page. Chalk died July 7, 1914, in |San |Antonio and his marked grave is in South Belton Cemetery. The second wife, |Sophia Manning Chalk, died in Killeen. By her previous marriage she had |one |daughter, Dell, who married J.M. Gray at Killeen on February 14, 1916. | | |Pgs. 386 - 387 |<Picture: "Major Whitfield Chalk served as the first sheriff of Williamson |County and in 1848 built the first mill on Salado Creek."> | |Whitfield Chalk | |Major Whitfield Chalk, son of William Chalk and Elizabeth Williams, was |born |April 2, 18ll, Hertford County, North Carolina. After being ordained a |minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, he immigrated to Texas in 1833. |By 1842 he was a resident of the municipality of Milam. While living here |he served as a lieutenant in J.G.W. Fisher's company which repulsed Adrian |Woll"s invasion of San Antonio. | |On October 17, 1842, he enlisted for the Somervell Expedition and was |commissioned a major. He was a member of Mier Expedition and was among |those captured; however, he escaped with Caleb St. Clair from Mier on the |evening the Texans capitulated, December 25, 1842. They hid under stacks |of |cane and, after terrible hardships, finally returned home. | |Whitfield was commissioned a major on August 5, 1844, in Second Regiment, |First Brigade, Republic of Texas Militia, by General Sam Houston, President |of the Republic. While holding this office, Chalk married Mary Fleming on |August 9, 1847. | |For services rendered to the Republic of Texas, Chalk received a grant of |320 acres of land in Milam County. Evidently, after their marriage, the |Chalks resided in the western part of Milam County, which was later divided |into Williamson and Bell Counties. After Williamson County was created |March 13, 1848, Major Chalk became the first sheriff of the new county. | |Whe the census of 1850 was taken, Whitfield Chalk and family were listed in |Milam County, probably in that part which became Bell County on January 22, |1850. He gave his occupation as millwright. He and his brother, Ira, had |built the first mill on Salado Creek. The family was living in Bell County |in 1860 and he gave his occupation as milling. | |Later, this family lived in Brenham, Texas, and by 1873 were residents of |Lampasas County. He died May 19, 1902, in that county and his wife died |there on January 1, 1903. In 1944 the federal government erected a marble |marker at his grave commemorating his service in the Mexican War.
