Researching the Shine & Austin families of Pendleton & Belton. My great-grandparents were FREDERICK ARTHUR SHINE, b. March 1893 in Pendleton and HARRIET FRANCES AUSTIN, b. December 1891 in Belton. They married ca. 1912, remaining in Belton for 7 or 8 years before moving to Dallas. Their first child, FREDERICK ARTHUR SHINE, JR was born in Belton in April 1916. Their daughter MARY FRANCES was born in Dallas in 1920. Fred, Sr. died in 1974 in Dallas. Harriet died in 1976, also in Dallas. Fred, Jr. died May 1967 in Atlanta, GA. Harriet was the daughter of George Norman Austin. I have a copy of the Austin geneology, though it incorrectly lists Harriet's given name as Hattie and her husband as "Mr. Skine." I haven't been able to find anything on the Shine family. My father recalls Fred, Sr. had siblings named RAYMOND, WILL, and LOSSIE, among others, and that the mother's name may have been LAURA STINGLEY. He also recalls a HUGH, though he doesn't know if this was a brother of Fred, Sr., a nephew or cousin. I have pictures of Fred Sr. and Jr. with two people noted on the backs in Fred Sr's handwriting as "Paw & Grandma". One photo, taken ca. 1920, lists "Paw" as 54 or 64 years old (the writing is obscured there). Can anyone help? Thanks in advance. Lisa Shine Burford LBurf73801@aol.com

Howdy Listers... The Fort Hood SENTINEL for May 20 had this notice, for those interested: "Limited Access Cemeteries To Open Memorial Day: Cemeteries located within the Fort Hood live-fire training areas will be open for public visitation May 30 as part of Memorial Day weekend. The live-fire training areas are usually closed to the public, but visitors may go to the family cemeteries 6 a.m. - 8 p.m. May 30 without an area access clearance permit. Fort Hoods' Range Control office guides will be available to assist families and monitor cemetery visits to ensure all visitors are clear of the live-fire training areas on time. Signs will be posted along major roads on post giving directions to the cemeteries. Roads which may be used to reach the cemeteries are East Range Road, West Range Road and Owl Creek Road. Individuals may visit other cemeteries located on the installation outside the live-fire training areas anytime during the year with an appropriate permit from the Area Access Control Center. The Area Access Control Center will also be open May 30 to provide information for visitors. The Area Access Control Center is located in Building 1941, adjacent to the Sportsmen's Center, near North Avenue and Rod and Gun Club Loop. In case everyone is not aware, Bill Bost has done an excellent job of putting up cemetery listings for Bell County. I wish every county site had a listowner who was as active and involved in helping all of us find our roots! Thanks a lot to all who have been helping. Susan Bartosh Rule
I got a note from the Coryell list this morning saying that Bobbie Ross, owner of the Coryell list was in Scott and White in ICU after having bypass surgery. The person that wrote the note said some complications had kept Bobbie in ICU longer but that she was improving. Maybe this is a time we "genealogist" might pull together to keep one of our own in our hearts and thoughts. MAB
Our prayers and thoughts are with Bobbie Ross and family during this difficult time. We sincerely hope Bobbie will recover soon and be back with us. Shirley G.

Carol, We have the two-volume set of THE STORY OF BELL COUNTY, TEXAS, Bell County Historical Commission. There is also a book by George Tyler called, THE HISTORY OF BELL COUNTY, TEXAS. There is another one, BELL COUNTY, TEXAS REVISITED but I don't remember the author...I think it was a Master's thesis. I think Tyler's book has a bibliography in it...I will look and if it does, I can make copies of the bib. and mail them to you. I have lived here in Bartlett, Bell Co. for only 11 years but have been told that the City Library at Belton has the best genealogy collection in this county. The Temple Public Library has, IMHO, a good collection. Bill could probably direct you to the part of the WebPage that has some bibliographies. If some of your family may have been in Williamson County, their Public Library is building their resources but they have a gentleman that is a certified genealogist that works at the library. This is my first time to post to this list. I have a long wish list, but will try not to ramble. Almost all of my family, as well as my first wife's family lived in Bell Co. since right after the Civil War. My Grandmother was Ethel Durham, grandaughter of William Green Durham who came to Belton from McMinnville, Tennessee in the late 1860's, along with several brothers and sisters, and several of his wife's family. Her name was Louisa York. Included in that side of the family are Sullivans and Reynolds. My wife's name was Mary Ann McCelvey. Her great uncle founded King's Daughter's Hospital, and her grandfather, Hugh McCelvey, was a fairly well known businessman in Temple. Her family names include: Staton, Lykes, Meadows, Presnell, Dauwalter, Spencer, and Suggs, all of which lived most of their lives in Bell County. If you see a familiar name, please contact me. I have a lot of information on all of these families, but am lacking information on currently living relatives. Sheron Sheppard
