Howdy Reba, and all... The Commission decision sounded pretty final, about not putting any of the Story of Bell County content on the Internet anywhere. I understand that there are concerns that too much money is made from the sale of SOBC to risk having sales undercut by putting the SOBC in its entirety on a web page. That's the Commission's call, of course. A committee has been appointed to review what the BCHC would want on a web page. Perhaps the thing for the BCHC to do is "host/sponsor" the current Bell County Genealogy and History web site, which is already in existence, and work on putting more Bell County history material there. The site is at no-cost to the BCHC, just as there's no cost for the websites I've established for the West Bell County Genealogical Society and the East Bell County Genealogical Society. I know in future I'll ask that content to be considered for placement on the pages be in a format that can basically be cut-and-pasted into the pages, rather than ask folks to transcribe material (or do it myself) only to have it removed later. The websites have been created to provide a way to help people find out more about Bell County history, and about the people who pioneered here, and have been followed by others who have seen Bell County as a place worthwhile to invest their time and interest in. One can expect there to be some communication differences in such a start-up effort. Such is the case with the SOBC. I just regret the long time in being notified it would not be okay to put its content on a Bell County website. So it's a good time to fall back and regroup, and see if the BCHC would like to have an Internet presence and, if so, what sort of information they'd like to make available to the public. A number of BCHC members do not have Internet access, so there's also a learning curve about what the Internet can offer and how to use it involved as well... that's okay. Patience helps, I guess. There are some BCHC members and Museum members that subscribe to this discussion list. Perhaps some ideas about what you'd think you'd expect to find on a Bell County Historical Commission page would be seen by BCHC folks. I'd like to have things have a much more positive tone, from this regrettable "learning incident" and move on to trying to provide better information through the Bell County webpages I'm trying to create and provide some useful, Bell County-unique history and genealogy helps for folks who don't live here, are home-bound for some reason, or don't know whom to ask for information. I sure don't want to be a "loose cannon" and attempt to impose my vision for what could be done about internet information for folks, and sour the BCHC on having anything to do with webpages, and the Internet, and so forth! ----Original Message Follows---- From: Rebalawler@aol.com Reply-To: TXBELL-L@rootsweb.com To: TXBELL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TXBELL-L] BCHC Instructions Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 17:49:12 EDT In a message dated 8/24/99 8:51:20 PM, you wrote: <<At the 23 August BCHC meeting, the Commission instructed that all material from the Story of Bell County (to include the biographical information from the Family History portions posted to the Biographies Board) be removed from the BCHC web site. I'll add my opinion to the thread ....... How disappointing that the decision was made to remove the Bell County research information from the web site. It is surprising that a public organization intended for the collection and dissemination of historical information would discourage such a valuable research resouce tool. It's my belief that the postings would have encouraged additional support for the BCHC through donations as well as sales of publications. It is evident from the e-mail on this list that there is considerable interest in the history of Bell County. My recommendation is that those of us who have our own Bell County material, submit it for posting and keep a useful genealogical resource alive. Howdy Marie.. The cemetery information shouldn't be affected. Those contents come from West Bell County Genealogy Society publications, and some from a book Polly Peaks-Elmore has given me permission to include. There's still lots to do, and it takes time, but bear with it... more will be posted in time. Bill Bost Bell County Coordinator ----Original Message Follows---- From: "MARIE S. For what it's worth I agree that the decision made was a bad choice. I personally would be inclined to buy a book from which my family information was taken if I had seen and used what I saw. I feel that the more people who have historical information, the more likely it is to be preserved.
What in the world do we do now? I had just recent paying attention and this happens. TomJohn01@aol.com Tom W. Johnson

Corbin, of Bell Co., TX from the Texas State Archives. I would be happy to send my copy to anyone researching Corbin or his family. From the 1906 pension application, I have discerned the following: He was born around 1830, served in Co. F of the 15th Texas Cavalry, enlisted about 1 June 1862 and was discharged in 1865. At the time the application was made, he had lived in the countryside near Temple, Bell Co., TX for thirty years. He held no real property in 1906, "only one horse & buggy worth about $140.00." He was a bachelor. James W. Cowan and O. M. Hood served as witnesses to verify Corbin's military service. In response to a request from the Comptroller, State of Texas, for Corbin's military service record, the Military Secretary of the U. S. War Department responded that records listed a "Drew H. Corbin, private, Company F, 15th Texas Cavalry, C. S. A., enlisted March 12, 1862, and reenlisted February 17, 1864, for the war. He was captured November 30, 1864, at Franklin Farm, Tennessee, and was finally received at Camp Douglas, Illinois, December 6, 1864. No later record of him has been found." If you have any link to the gentleman, please contact me and I will send the application out. _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Dear Bill, I am so sorry that happened. I was really looking forward to having more on the site, since my family came from there. Too bad, how people have to control things even on the net. Hope all works out. So if it is going to be computerized, what does that mean exactly? Trying to find my family I have tried researching a J.G. Payne and a Carolynn Martin I think that was her name, in Bell Co. Aka Carrie. married maybe around 1857-1860. I am unable to find them I did go the LDS research room to locate them the only thing I found was 1880 census of them in Bell county. pg. 16 supervisor dist 4 enumeration dist no 7. But this is all I have been able to find on my family. Do you have marriage of them? I sure hope so, it would be greatly appreciated if you could do this for me. Or any tax list in Bell county of them? Thank you very much. Sincerely Sherry Davis-Ellis
Howdy Folks.. At the request of the East Bell County Genealogical Society, I've started a web page for them. The Society provided the content. If you like their content and their page idea, please let them know at the address(es) on the page. View it at: www.rootsweb.com/~txebcgs A question for the list.... did anyone get any value out of the photos I had on the BCHC web page? I've removed my photos from that page and am thinking about moving the photo album to the generic TXBELL web page at: www.rootsweb.com/~txbell IF they help at all. Comments?
