Nancy Catherine Young is believed to be of Apache descent. Does Bell County list residents for approximately 1850-1900? Thank you for any information you can give me. I mention it because I had to look in surrounding counties to find where my folks from TN came to TX initially. In Williamson County as well, I found a lot of PAYNE family. In Bell County I find your J.G. PANE in 1880 census but there are no other PAYNES/PANES except for these... Caroline PAYNE in 1880 Mary PAYNE in 1880 In my reference books I find John PAYNE a;so listed as PAINE and he bought a small store around 1850 near Nolanville. There are over 35 references to PAYNE so I am still searching through those. I will get back to you soon. 3. Howdy! A good place on which to post information you have about Bell County ancestors is on the collection of boards for Bell County. There are boards for biographies, obituaries, wills, Bible records, pensions, deeds, and queries. You can go either through the Bell County Genealogy and History web site to get to them, or through the Bell County Resources page at http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/TX/Bell/. The only board, however, on which questions/queries about ancestors can be placed is on the Query Board. (I delete queries on other boards, per RootsWeb and GenConnect guidelines.) It can be a good idea to post queries on both the TXBELL list AND on the Bell County Query Board, as not all interested Bell County researchers are TXBELL subscribers, or are Query Board responders. You're welcome to join the TXBELL list and either participate, or just monitor. We've got about 85 subscribers (plus or minus a couple) and it's interesting to see who has what information about whom, and see people sharing what they know. The Allens came to Bell County, Texas (along with several others) in 1851 from Tennessee. They were Sarah Allen (widowed) along with her three children: John Quincy Allen b. 1825, Pennsylvania - 4 children Benjamin Franklin Allen b. 1836, S. Carolina - 3 children and Ann Elizabeth Allen (Bingham) b. 1833, Tennessee - 11 children Benjamin Franklin Allen, my ancestor, must have lost his wife (Sarah Elizabeth Hollis Allen) early in their marriage. They were married 7/25/1855 in Coryell County, had their first child, Ibby E. in 1856, their second, John Wylie (m g-grandfather) in 1857 and their last Mary Ellen (Mollie) Allen Dillard in 1859. Benjamin Franklin Allen, presumably a widower, left his three children with his sister, joined Company D with the 18th Regiment Texas Volunteer Cavalry in the fall of 1861 and mustered in on 1/20/1862. His regiment wound up in the Battle of Arkansas Post which was a part of the overall Vicksburg Campaign, he was captured on 1/11/1863) and taken on a barge of some description up the Mississippi to Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illnois and died there as a prisoner on 3/5/1863 of pneumonia. His three children grew up quickly. My g-grandfather, John Wylie Allen was a true Texas cowboy, working in the panhandle on the S-Bar-L ranch and on some of the cattle drives up to Kansas. His wife, Lela Dillard Allen lived in a dugout for awhile and raised nine children in the area. I have lots more information, including prisoner of war rolls, probate records, real property records, copies of early Bell County newspapers from the late 1850's showing their cattle brands, some delightful interviews of my great-grandmother and would be happy to share. If there are any common ancestors to anyone else on the list - please e-mail me at rallen@bakerbotts.com or to the list address which I presume is okay (someone let me know if not). I don't have a home computer and use the one at work where we fortunately have internet access -- it looks like there are some venues for posting information - am I correct? ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    2. May I jump in here and ask if you know of some of the places in TN that the early settlers in Bell Co. came from, that is before the Civil War. My Willaim M. Peppers, and wife, Eveline Kincheloe, had a dau. Mary Jane. This family moved to Bell Co in the early 1840's. William was from TN. Eveline was b. in Blount Co. AL They were the first white family to live on "Peppers Creek". This creek runs parallel to IH 35 in Belton, TX. Mary Jane was b. in ARK in 1841. dj in Austin

    3. Sherry! A lot of the settlers that came to Bell Co. from TN. after the Civil War-- Came from Van Buren, White and Warren Co. I have the Census for Van Buren and there were lots of Payne's in Van Buren Co. I will check the census tomorrow to see if your James Granvil is there. Do you know his mother -father--or siblings? 3. Thank You Beverly. You said you have books on Bell county? Do they just have people that are well to do in the books, or do they have farmers also? The reason I ask is that I have been trying to find my gggrandfather James Granvil Payne, Pane. He was born in Tenn but moved to Bell co. I found him in the 1880 census with his wife Carrie M. and their children. But for some reason I can't seem to go backward whatsoever. Anyway He was born in Tenn his mother is from Tenn, and his father is from VA. Well with the name of payne sure. So do you think yo might be able to find him? All of his children were born in TX in Bell county they were in the Twsp of Killien. He died in 1897. Born around 1824. 3. Excuse the carelessness in typing the name of the school, it should of been Oscar instead of Scar. Oscar was established in 1890 and only school with two stories that I can find in this area. In 1907 it's name was changed to Little Elm. Joan

    2. Your query caught my eye. I am a decendant of John Vickers, b. 1822, TN. m Martha Brantley, b. 1816, Hardeman Co. TN. I do not know of your building or of your grandmother, but they may have been related. There is a Lola Vickers King that lives in Liberty Hill, TX that has a lot of info on the Vickers. I will send you her address if you are interested. dj
