My husband's grandparents, great grandparents and one set(also at least) of great great grandparents are there, as well as an unknown amount of other relatives. Does there happen to be a book on cemetery surveys for Bell Co or at least on Hillcrest Cem? I can't promise when I can get to it, but if you'll list the names of kin you think are in Hillcrest Cemetery, I will try and find them........ Marion in Belton
If you find someone that looks up info on Hillcrest Cemetery in Temple, please post. My great-grandmother and three of her children are buried there. Jeannie: The cemetery you are referring to is probably the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery also known as the Winkler Cemetery. It is located on Highway 36. After you cross the bridge Owl Creek Road is on the left and the cemetery is just past Owl Creek Road. This is the only cemetery I am familiar with that far out on Highway 36. Hope this helps. Several years ago, I spent some time at the newspaper archive center which is part of the UT Library system. At that time, I found some neat little tidbits to flesh out my g-g-grandparents a little. For example, I have copies of the cattle brands published on the front page of the newspaper in Belton in 1859 and some other odds and ends. Unfortunately that day I only had a few hours to spend and vowed to get back. Several years (!) later I'm actually going to keep that vow and go up there this weekend. Since that was pre-internet much less pre-web genealology mailing lists, I thought I'd share this information. Many (most?) of you may already know about this but just in case someone doesn't, here it is. Please make note -- this is a DIFFERENT collection than the newspapers maintained by the Texas State Archives. The State Archives actually have a MUCH smaller collection (and not as old) as what the UT system has. The website if anyone wants it is: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/Libs/PCL/refserv/per_micro/cah/ The specific Bell County (Belton) newspapers from the 1800's are: Belton Journal Apr. 16 1870 to Aug. 1918 (incomplete) (microfilm) April 16 1870 to Aug 3 1872 (incomplete) Oct 18 1877 to an 15, 1899 (incomplete - in paper copy) Belton Independent May 29 1858 to Jun 4 1859 (incomplete) Belton Evening News Jan 5, 1903 to Aug 9, 1918 (incomplete) Belton Democrat Mar 8, 1861 (microfilm) May 5, 1860, July 12, 1861 (paper copy) Bell County Democrat Apr 7 1898, May 16, 1907 to Oct 4, 1910 (incompelte) Belton Journal and Bell County Democrat Jan 31, 1929 to Sep 28 1944 (incomplete) Belton Messenger, Dec 2, 5 1913 Belton Review Jul. 28 1876 Belton Weekly News May 17, 1887 Journal-Reporter Sep 30 1898 to Apr 7, 1911 Semi-Weekly Journal Mar 19 to Apr 23, 1870 Sunday Morning Call 10/3/1897 Texas Farmer (Agriculture News) Feb 23, 1881 to Sep 17, 1889
I have a William C. Reddock listed in the 1880 Bell Co. Federal Census index. Would someone having access to this census please look up the persons in this family.Would be most appreciative! Thanks, Roger M. Pace Shamrock,Texas irishfan@pan-tex.net
Hi Nelda, Sure sounds like we have the same SPOONTS family! The Anna Virginia SPOONTS is my GGrandmother. She married Warren Weddell, first then John Goode. Warren died in 1895 when my Grandfather was 4 years old, the middle child with an older sister and younger brother. Anna later married John around 1904, and had one son who died as a teenager. I use Family Treemaker version 5.0. Interesting note on Louise Diamond family, her brother was listed with the family on the 1880 census with consumption. His tomstone indicates his death date just 4 days after the census! His name in with the family as brother-in-law was my first clue to Louise's surname. Also, he was a Jr. so then I knew her father's name! God works in mysterious ways! Any information you would like to share is welcome. I will pass on whatever I find out about the family. Thanks Again! I have 11 children listed among them William Houston b 1836, Henry Andrew [H A] b 1849, and John Edward b 1853. John Edward is our line. Edith Mae Spoonts [daughter and mother of my husband] Warren H. M ayfield [my husband] For the family of William Houston and Louisa Diamond I have 11 children listed. One child is listed as Annie b 1867 m [1] John Goode [2] Warren Waddell. Could this be the Anna Virginia you mentioned? Are you able to open GEDCOM files on your computer? If so I could send you what I have. If not, then I could figure another way. First let me know if this fits into what you have. Could you give me the name of your parents and grandparents so I can see if I have them. I think I will have them. Do you use Family Tree Maker software. Nelda Mayfield.
Dear Jody, I have been searching for my James Granvil Payne in the Mcdowell cemetery for sometime now, I even requested a death certificate, but they could not find him. I know he was buried there. Would you mind checking for me please? He also went by J.G. Payne. He died around March of 1897, born around 1826. I would truly appreciate it. He has been my block wall forever. Thank you. Sincerely Sherry Davis-Ellis
Hi Nelda, Thanks for the information. Have viewed the marriage index of Bell, Co. on microfilm and noticed the record of your John Edward and Louise HOYLE. I am a decendant of William W. "Houston" SPOONTS, my Great Grandfather. His daughter Anna Virginia was my Great Grandmother. Can you tell me how they are related to your husband's line? I think the H.A. SPOONTS you mentioned is W.W.'s brother... Thanks again! I am researching the Kinsey family who came from GA to Bell Co., TX in 1872. Francis Marion (Frank) Kinsey and his wife Fannie (Dixon) came to Bell Co. in 1872 bringing with them Frank's brothers; Lucius Lafayette and Thomas Jesse and there children; Virginia, Minnie, Rollin H., and John Washington. The children born in Bell Co. are James A. born Nov. 24, 1872, Luther born 1874, Thomas born 1876 and Henry born 1878. Francis Marion's death was in the Heidenheimer Hummings : Mr. Frank Kinsey was instantly killed Tuesday, Dec. 7th, 1903, 8 miles south of his place near Mr. Dick Jones. His team became frightened at the northbound passenger train causing the team to run into a telephone post and throwing him out, breaking his neck and shoulder. Kinsey is a well know farmer, one of Bell County's first settlers. My great great grandfather was Lucius who came with Francis, he was married to Georgia A. Arkansas Dodgen on 11 Dec 1884 in Bell Co. My great grandfather James Welcome Kinsey was born in Bell Co. 12 Mar 1887. I am in the process of verifying the information that I have and compiling any information on these families. If anyone has any information, please let me know. I live in Tolar, Hood Co. TX and am planning a trip to Bell Co. soon. Thanks Dana

Hi Liz, I am researching the SPOONTS family. My husband's mother is Edith Mae SPOONTS b Dec 30, 1876 at Moffat m Howell R. Mayfield b 1875 Bruceville, TX. She is the daughter of John Edward SPOONTS and Louise Hoyle. Elmer Boutin is on this list and is currently making a list of those buried in Moffat cemetery. He had located 2 SPOONTS as of 10-6-99. Their names are H. A. SPOONTS July 3, 1849-May 31 1920 Mary L SPOONTS Apr. 8, 1858-May 5, 1898 [wife of H. A. McDowell Cemetery is also known as the Nolan Valley cemetery. It is northeast of Killeen, on FM93, south of FM439. Both Andrew Jackson Hamilton (1832-1910) and Narcissa Hamilton (1836-1923) are buried there.
