Dorice: I am a desc. of that John Bowles who was killed near Uvalde. I have done extensive research on this family and am willing to share with anyone who has a connection to that family. John Bowles, b. 13 Feb. 1802, Hanover Co. VA. Killed on 28 Oct. 1859, at Guide Hill, near Uvalde Co. TX. m. Millie Caroline Pate in TN. abt. 1824. John and his sons were very famous Texas Indian Fighter there in Texas, and their exploits are listed in the book, by A.J. Sowell, "TEXAS INDIAN FIGHTERS: under his sons name. DOKE BOWLES. A full account of bravery by these early settlers are listed in this book, Bell Co. Tx. & Uvalde Co. is where most of this takes place. Anyone connected to this family. Contact me. Mina (Townsend) Bates minabat@aol.com
I was just reading your e-mail regarding the PATE family. I do not know of this family, but I have a little book, "The Life and Diary of Reading W. Black" A History of Early Uvalde. Arranged by Ike Moore. Privately printed for THE PROGRESO MEMORIAL LIBRARY, Uvalde, TX In this book on pg 23, the author states that John Bowles and John Davenport were killed in an Indian raid on the Sabinal river area. John Davenport was the gr grandfather of a cousin of mine that lives in Utopia, TX. She just recently found John Davenports grave on a hillside. There is another mention of John Bowles on pg 87, saying that his decendants still live in Uvalde. Maybe you know all this, but I just couldn't help but let you know. My gr gr grandfather, William M. Peppers, b. 1817, TN, m. Eveline Kincheloe, b. 1822, Blount Co. AL. They moved to Benton Co. or Washington Co. AR. then on to Milam/Bell Co. in 1842 when their dau, my gr grandmother was one year old. They settled on Peppers creek, named for them. They were the first white settlers on Peppers Creek. The family later moved to Uvalde, TX where their dau, Mary Jane Peppers, and Henry Jefferson Dawson were married. in 1857. William M. Peppers is also in this little book, as being an "Indian fighter". I hope you can get some sense out of this rambling on. If you would like for me to copy the pages and send to you I will be glad to. I have a scanner but haven't learned to use it yet. I must take time out and 'read the book' as my son would say! Dorice Jeffries Austin, TX

Forwarded for possible helps.. Bill Bost ----Original Message Follows---- From: Charlotte <sunset@vvm.com> To: longwired@hotmail.com Subject: cemetary in Harker Heights Date: Tue, 04 Jan 2000 22:39:02 -0600 I'm hoping you will know the name for the cemetery located maybe 100 feet outside our fence line. The land surrounding this cemetery belongs to the Pate family. It is east of the Ninth Grade Center, southeast part of town, north of FM2410 and west of Indian Trail. I talked to Frank Pate about this cemetery a month ago. He has given me permission to hop the fence and look about. I would like to help [or do it all with some guidance] catalog the graves and get the city [ha!] to take care of it [the law requires them to]. My goal would be some form of security[fence?], clean-up, more dirt for filling and restore what can be. Since Red Pate died [Frank's uncle], the briars have kept it hidden some. Vandals have destroyed more markers. Mary Hope's tomb stone is gone. A small chunk of marble with a few letters is left. I know the cemetery is registered somewhere. Back when, an article in the paper asked for folks to tell of any cemeteries, I called the number but this one was registered already. Red kept it cleaned up. As kids, we played there some. More folks moving nearby and tearing things up, destroy everything. I told the city it was there before they annexed us four years ago. It is time they own up to what is right :-) I understand there is a law forbidding the sale of a cemetery. Frank said this one is not in the Pate name. I hope someone has recorded the graves already? I undoubtedly missed one or two but I have eight down and know there are many unnamed sites there. Hello, There is a Benjamin S. STEWART listed on the 1850 Milam Co. census, next door to my James Eden Williams. This would have been in the Belton area. Benjamin listed as age 28, Carpenter, born in TN. Wife Sarah, age 20, born Illinois. Son James age 11 months born in TX. Might anyone have info on this Stewart family please? Thanks, Teddy
The following CARTWRIGHT brothers were in Bell Co., TX, for the 1880 census. Their sister was married in Bell Co., in 1871, so it is assumed that they were in Bell Co. at the time of their marriages: Zachariah Taylor (Zachary) CARTWRIGHT married abt 1874 to Margaret A.; Joseph Franklin CARTWRIGHT married abt 1875 to Mary Ollie. Can anyone help with the specifics of these marriages and the maiden names of these two women? Will exchange information.
