    1. [TXBELL-L] Surname: BURCHELL
    2. Hello List, I'm a new member to the list today. I have just received new information that some of my family may have been in Bell Co. in the late 1890's-up. What was my first thought, try the mailing list they are always so helpful. I am looking for a John Burchell and family from Grainger Co. TN. They were suppose to be in or around the Temple TX area. Is there anyone who could look up any of the census or cemetery records on them for me? John Burchell born abt 1857 Grainger Co TN married Nancy Caroline Roach, Sept 2, 1874 in Grainger Co TN. His father was a James Burchell and mother Catherine unknown. Nancy born-Oct 27,1850, is reported to have died June 24, 1938 in Temple, no dates for John. A younger brother of John Burchell, Robert Franklin(Frank) Burchell and his wife Elizabeth (Lizzie) Fralix Burchell, also was reported to have come to TX after 1900 to find his brother John, but was also never heard of again. Any help would be truly appreciated. I live in Northern Illinois, but have much material on Wayne Co IL , in southern part of state, which is where my husband's family is from and I have access to the IL Death Index 1919-1948 if I can help anyone with anything. I thank you in advance for any help. Barbara McCord-jjm94@aol.com Morris, IL

    3. All, The cemetery being referred to as near Little Flock is probably the Stokes-Nelson cemetery. It is south of Little Flock about .8 mile. The road has been changed from Quail Trail to Bob White. Specific directions: from SH 53, half mile south on Little Flock Road, then .7 mile south on Bob White, in a field, under some trees. About a half mile east of Bob White. On a good day you can see the outline of a Texas Historical Marker from Bob White. It has not been plowed under, but is rarely cleaned so is difficult to get around in. The historical marker says " Standing as a reminder of Bell County's pioneer heritage, this small family cemetery is representative of many similar graveyards in Texas. Peter and Mary Isabella Stokes came to this area from Virginia in the late 1850s, along with their children and Mrs. Stoke's parents, Nathaniel Bacon and Mary Speed Nelson. This family graveyard was begun on the Stokes farm in 1858 with the burial of a relative, Robert Venable. Among the ten graves here are those of Peter and mary Stokes and N.B. and Mary Nelson. The cemetery was restored in the 1980s." The marker was placed in 1989. A plaque below the marker says "John Champion Chapter N S C D X V I I C 1990 Nelson-Stokes Cemetery restored by descendant Mary Fay Martin Pundt and J. Halley Pundt." [I don't know the meaning of the initials]. We have not cataloged this cemetery so can't tell you who else is buried there. The reference to a cemetery that has been plowed under may be to one of two in Bell County of which we are aware. Embree Cemetery [also known as Rock Church] was about 4 miles NE of Belton on Riverside Rd. It had about 5 graves. It was destroyed in the 1950s according to "The Story of Bell County." We have been to the site and, indeed, there is no current hard evidence of a cemetery. The other was the McKnight Cemetery east of Bartlett. It had about 3 graves. The Story of Bell County says it was "plowed up and the gravestones stacked." We have not visited this site. On this old abstract, she says the word school is near one corner of their property. The Mtn View school operated for 68 years. Another piece of the big puzzle. This friend says you two are good people and I'm near the same old age as you :-) So... I hear by give you the Betsy Hilliard seal of approval. I bet your ears were just a burning! Tell me about this book that has been [or is going to be?] written. She said you both could go over a fence pretty well :-) Small world! Charlotte

    3. Reba, I wonder if this old cemetery on Quail Trail Rd just may be the one that one of our Sullivan relatives said had been plowed under? Thank you for checking. I have emailed my Sullivan cousin that Gordon's run into her line to see what she has to say. She may have to email her cousin in Bell Co that researches the Bartles line to see if they have anything like this. My high school girl friend is late getting here from Dallas tonight (4 hours late in taking off from DFW). Anyway, we are to spend the next few days hashing over the good ole days and I'll give her the Cooks' tour of Las Vegas. I probably won't get back to you before Thurs., but is there anything I can look up for you in census records, or perhaps books. We have a Mormon Family History Center here that has a lot of genealogical data, films, fiche etc. in it and it just isn't for Mormon's, so let me know. They do have one cemetery book from Bellville, Bell Co, but that is all that they have on Bell Co. They do have other books for other counties in TX, though not much. They have the 1850 Federal Census book, something from Stephen Co., I have books at home from Johnson Co (where Cleburne is), and I have printed things off of the Ellis Co website. Anyway, if I can look anything up for you, DO let me know. Back at you on Thurs. or Friday... 2. Dear Kay, We searched Little Flock Cemetery and sorry to report found no Sullivans. There was a telephone number to call pertaining to burials. I called and Mr Lawerence checked his list....no Sullivans. He did however give one bit of information that we will pursue. He said the nearest cemetery that he knew was a very old cemetery on private property in or near a field. He did not know where it is but thinks on Quail Trail Road. Niether did he know the landowners name. Not much to go on but we will pursue. Could this be the cemetery your relative had reference to? Also you mentioned Cynthia Elizabeth(Gordon)Sullivan. There are several Gordon gravesites in the Little Flock Cemetery. Mr Lawerence said those Gordons were related to the Moores, the people that gave the land. The Moores are buried there. Could these Gordons be yours? Regards, Reba

    3. The Little Flock Cemetery, east of Temple on SH53, is a beautiful, well-maintaned cemetery and is still in use. There are over 500 burials in the cemetery. There is a historical marker at the cemetery. The marker says the cemetery was established in 1860. I think I answered the other questions in my first email. I can't tell you anything about the Sullivan's you are asking about. Did not find them in the inventory list for the Little Flock cemetery. There is a Sullivan Road in the southeastern part of Bell County, but I don't know the history and how the road came to be called Sullivan. 3. I enjoyed the ceremony as well. The courthouse renovation was so well done that it almost looks new. I saw most of the great pictures inside, but ran out of time before I could see all of the third floor. I find it interesting that Texas has more old county courthouses that any other state in the USA. Out of 225 counties, 80 have courthouses over 100 years old. (Bell was built in 1885, remodeled once in 1950, then again last year.) I took a few pictures of the ceremony. Perhaps I can create a section on the website for photos of it that everyone sends in. That is what one of our oldtime Sullivan's told a cousin of mine just the other day. We hope he was wrong, as he claims some of our Sullivans are buried there.>> Kay, As we all know small communities show the most change. Perhaps this person was thinking about a church at Little Flock. I write true stories for my grandchildren, sometimes. Perhaps you would enjoy this one. ********** In 1950 ,though we lived in Temple. We attended numerous revivals being held from time to time by various Church of Christ throughout the Bell County area. One such revival was held by Little Flock Church of Christ. It was held under the open tabernacle located about a mile west of the schoolhouse and cemetery. Electric lights, fans and a nice summer breeze from the creek nearby made an enjoyable surrounding to hear songs of praise and a sermon from a dedicated preacher. Career took us away from Bell County. Our roots still hung on, though. In 1961 due to family illness and feeling the need to be home; we purchased one hundred and eighty eight acres just six miles east of Temple. Touring the local county roads to see places we had not seen in a few years; we happened down Little Flock Road. To our sad surprise the tabernacle was really old and in desperate need of much repair. Upon inquiry; we learned the that members of the Little Flock Church of Christ had joined the Temple congregation. Hence the old tabernacle was now being used to store winter hay. The grounds had been incorporated with the adjoining farmland. A few old broken and weathered pews were still piled in the brush along the creek bank. With permission; we scrambled through the pile and found one that seemed repairable. After cutting it to fit between two front porch posts; then came a lot of scraping, sanding, renailing slats and applying several coats of paint. Our renovated home was originally built in 1895. The architechure of that time period featured large porches, big posts on a huge wooden frame house trimmed in black. This house certainly could accommodate a porch bench eleven feet long. That dear old bench has not only been sat upon by numerous friends and family members; it has been a conversation piece for strangers that knock on our door. There is no record when our porch bench-pew was built; but it has adorned our front porch since the summer of 1961. With the memories it has have created ; that thing is destined to be here as long as this old house stands.
