    1. [TXBELL-L] Bell Co Sesquicentennial CHARTER OAK ELECTION DAY
    2. Joe D. Deaver
    3. Just reminding everyone that there is another Bell County Sesquicentennial event coming up next month, Charter Oak Election Day. It will be on Saturday, April 22. At 11am, there will be a celebration at the renovated courthouse in Belton, including planting an oak tree. At noon, there will be a family picnic at Yettie Polk Park (one block West of the Courthouse). And at 2pm, Bell County Museum's Sesquicentennial Exhibit opens one block north of the courthouse. I plan to make the drive down to Belton for these events. Anyone else attending? For more details, see: http://www.vvm.com/sqc/charteroak.html Joe D. 1. [TXBELL-L] Proposed Fee Increase for Copies of Military Service and Pension Records
    2. Jonelle Ellis Russell
    3. Greetings to all: Having read some conflicting information on a variety of list, I made queries to the Federation of Genealogical Societies, and officers in some genealogical organizations where I hold membership. The following from the FGS website answers my queries: --------------------- Proposed Fee Increase for Copies of Military Service and Pension Records By Jack Brissee, Chair Records Preservation and Access Committee (RP&AC) Released: 6 March 2000 There have been postings on a number of mail lists recently about an increase in the fees the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) charges for copies of compiled military service records and pension records. While NARA is considering a change to the fee structure for these documents, the information that has been posted is both premature and somewhat inaccurate. The Records Preservation and Access Committee, a joint endeavor of the Federation of Genealogical Societies and the National Genealogical Society, has contacted NARA officials for clarification. The following is the "official NARA statement" issued in response to our inquiry: NARA Statement The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) will be issuing a proposed rule within the next few weeks that will revise fees for reproduction, including the "fixed-fee" orders in the NATF 80 series. The proposed rule will have a 60-day public comment period, during which time we will actively seek the comments of the user community. The proposed rule is presently undergoing internal government review. When it is released for publication in the Federal Register, NARA will notify the national genealogical organizations and post a copy of the proposed rule on its web site. The message will include the exact URL and the address for sending comments. The Records Preservation and Access Committee will continue to monitor this proposal, and will post relevant information on the Records Preservation and Access pages of the Federation of Genealogical Societies' Web site <http://www.fgs.org> and on the National Genealogical Society Web site <http://www.ngsgenealogy.org> when it is available. Please feel free to forward this posting to other mail lists on which the original posting may have appeared. Sincerly, Jonelle Ellis Russell

Reddock in the index Loc. E.D. 5, pg. 385. Believe these to be father & son. Would love to know the family members and ages and place of birth. Thanks for any help you may be. Roger M. 2. Jody Dillard
    3. Charlene, I feel certain the Historical Society is aware of the Bates cemetery. But the other one where Prince is buried is by the edge of the road next to an old house or mobile home. The young man who took us there was from the church. He thought some of these people might be part of our McDowell family. i am still trying to make the connection. I have Bigham's but no Bates in my family. The other cemetery is in the Nolan Valley Estates (I think that is the name of it) and is very well tended by the family who owns the surrounding property. They were very gracious to give us a tour but I forgot their name. Sorry. I am going back down there this week and will try to get more information. One of the ladies at our reunion was a member of the historical society and provided much of the history of the McDowell/Estes/Cowan families. Jody

    3. In a recent trip to Belton I discovered a small cemetery in a new housing development in the Nolan Valley area near the Nolan Valley Baptist Church. I have photos of the graves there. All seem to be part of the Robert and Sue BATES family. Other graves are unmarked except for one large double headstone for R.P. and A.E. Bigham. For the Bates family there are markers for Girrie Lois and Lowry Bates, Little Annie age 2, a son Little... looks like Buch, age 2, Robert G. age 4. The cemetery is on private property but I could give you directions. I also found what was left of a small cemetery. My grandfather was responsible for getting a road built for access to the cemetery in the early 1900's. The only legible stone is the name Mary Lou Prince Apr 9, 1855 to Aug 19, 1936. Two vaults have been lifted above ground. The lot is in sad shape. It is just off Rock Quarry Rd. West of Belton if anyone is interested. I have photos I can send to anyone from this family.
