    1. [TXBELL-L] Charter Oak Pictures!
    2. Joe D. Deaver
    3. This weekend, I attended the state conference for the TXGenWeb County Coordinators and volunteers, near Dallas. In addition to meeting some of my fellow Texas county coordinators, I attended some great presentations. Leigh Compton provided some useful tips on webpage enhancements and digital photos. One of her recommendations was a web application called jclicker. I decided to play around with it some this evening. You may recall that the Charter Oak Election Day celebration took place last weekend as part of the Bell County Sesquicentennial events. I attended (only saw one other blue ribbon!) and took several pictures at the old charter oak tree, the courthouse, and the picnic. There is a slideshow presentation of 21 of these pictures at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbell/sesqui1/ You must have a java-compliant browser (recent versions of IE or Netscape will do, probably above version 4) to view this. This is just an experiment and likely will not be permanent. The images have been reduced in size, but still make take a little while to load with a slow connection. I may create a text index of the pictures later this week for those with older or non-standard browsers. The final photo project I am working on will probably use standard HTML and thumbnail previews, so that the photos can have searchable descriptions. Enjoy! Joe D. 1. [TXBELL-L] New Birth/Death Record Project
    2. Joe D. Deaver
    3. In case you have not heard, the Texas State Archives has made an enormous amount of data available online recently about births and deaths. TXGenWeb has initiated a project to break down this data into county segments. There are several volunteers, including myself soon, who are working on this effort to add to digital archives for each Texas county. Thanks to project coordinator Larry Oliver <loliver@tyler.net>, the first datafile (1943 births) has been added to the Bell County online archives: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tx/bell/vitals/births/1943/bellb43a.txt ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tx/bell/vitals/births/1943/bellb43b.txt There's a lot more files to come over the next few months. If you are interested in helping out with this project, mostly parsing out large datafiles to smaller county segments, please let me know. Joe D. My father told me he played baseball and that a article was wrote about him in The Temple Daily Telgraph somewhere in the 1930's. He also said that he received a new car as an award. He was married to Gertrude Griffin and they had two children son Mosley, daughter Margie, who was born on Jan. 17, 1909. Also I have a copy of Margie social security card Margie Rae Mundine gave the address 303 East Ave C., Temple, Texas. she applied for her social security card on Jan. 26, 1944 I'm not sure where Mack or Gertrude were born, only that they lived there, my father was raised in Temple. I also think that Mosley may have worked for the railroad. Thank you.. Patricia

    3. Hi, I really hate to ask this but I have a cousin in Bell Co. who is VERY new to computers and the genealogy computer world. He is having a hard time subscribing to the Bell Co., TX list. I have sent him steps to take to make sure he has typed in the correct address and I don't know how else to help him. He has lived in Bell Co. all his life. Thanks so much. We just need to get him subscribed and if I could do it for him, I would but don't know how that would even work. Dolores

    1. [TXBELL-L] Markham-Upshaw Reunion - Bell County folks

    3. Markham-Upshaw Family Reunion New Braunfels, Texas June 17, 2000 Descendants of John Bunyon Markham - Sarah Elizabeth Upshaw Descendants of any brothers & sisters of John B. Markham Descendants of John Upshaw - Tabitha Lawless Contact: Charles A Markham <camark2@juno.com> Sarah Schultz died in 1999. She had been living in an assisted living residence since the death of her husband in 1998. She was an expert on the Upshaw's- she left her files for the Temple Library- I just did not have the room and did not want the responsibility that would have went with keeping them updated. Everone is welcome to the reunion- the dinner will be catered and will cost each $5.50 we have reserved area 34 & 35. It is a covered pavillion and also extends to area under ythree huge live oak trees and is within 50 feet of the comal springs. It is a beautiful setting and everone should enjoy it . It is near the restooms and people with disabilities should not have any problems. I wish I could get Lucille Reeves from the Noxubee County Mississippi Historical Society to come but her eye sight is extremely bad and she just can't make it. Billie Gene Poland from Bienville, La should be able to shed some light on some things pertaining to the Markham's. Please spread the word- the more the better. If this one comes off as expected we will make it an annual affair in June each year. We might use Salado as the next site- however- you don't have as many places to chose from as far as motels and resturants but it would be historically tied to the family more than New Braunfels. dmorgan@efn.org David W. 1. [TXBELL-L] Tucker, Shepheard
    2. Gina Heffernan
    3. Texanna Tucker Shepheard died at the Bell County Home in 1956. I found the transcription of the patients at the home and was very surprised to see Texanna on the list. No one in my family knew that Texanna had ever been there. I'm not sure why she was there, but I would like to leave some notes about my family. This is from my maternal line. My first family group is unconfirmed: William M. Tucker b. 7/26/1827 in Alabama m. 6/15/1863 in Brenham, Washington Co, TX to Rachel Rutha Anna Joines b. abt. 1837 in Georgia. Children: Texanna, William Thomas, Louisa, Jensy/Anita. My grandmother told me that Texanna was the Joines, but I was offered this information from a Joines descendant. David Samuel Shepheard (I found various spellings) b. 6/16/1854 in Columbia Co, AR d. 4/18/1943 in Milam Co, Texas m. Texanna Tucker b. 11/10/1864 in Texas d. 9/12/1956 in Belton, Bell Co, Texas. Children: Nettie, Rachel, Rebecca, Minnie, Elizabeth, Syvilla, Eula Mae, Willie, Andabell, Narcissus, Jesse T., Raymond. In this group, my grandmother provided all the information except Texanna's last name and Syvilla, although she could not remember the name of a child which died in infancy. Texanna was admitted to the home on May 29, 1956 by her son, Jesse. Jesse lived at Holland at the time. If anyone knows of Jesse or his mother, I would love to hear from them. I have found SHEPPARD, SHEPHERD and SHEPHEARD in various records related to these families. -- Gina Gale - researching ARMSTRONG BRAZZIL DISNEY FORREY HEFFERNAN HOLDER MCKINNON MELLEN MILLS O'NEAL PUCKETT RICKERT SENN SHEPHERD SPARKS WILLS and related lines. 1. [TXBELL-L] Giles Co. TN to Bell Co. TX
    2. Jonelle Ellis Russell
    3. Bell Surnames: JOHNSTON, CAST, MARSHALL, ELLIS My great aunt Lucy Marshall married S. N. (Newt) CAST, 5 May 1872. Louisa C. and Samuel N. are listed in the Giles County, TN census in 1880 and were residing on S. 11th in Temple, Bell County, TX in 1900. My ggrandparents Fannie Lee (Marshall) & James Gregory JOHNSTON were married in Randolph County AR moving from AR to Bell County, TX between 1886 & 1887. One son, Clarence Lester was born in Bell County, 21 Sep 1887, my grandmother, Noba Imo, was born in Temple, in 1891. The JOHNSTON Family returned to Randolph County, AR before 1893, but moved back to TX before their youngest son was born in Bell County in 1902. Family accounts indicate that after returning to TX he JOHNSTON's stayed with the CAST family in until they found housing in Bell County. A funeral card passed on to me reads S. N. CAST, born July, 29, 1848. Died Aug. 1, 1912. aged 64 years 2 days. I believe Lucy & Newt CAST son's wife was also named Lucy. One of my dad's cousin's recalls visiting Lucy & John when she was a child. I would guess this would have been in the 1920s. Somewhere I think I have some census notes showing John and Lucy listed in the 1920 census. In December 1906 my grandparents Edward Marshall ELLIS and Noba Imo JOHNSTON filed their marriage license in McLennan County. My father, Earl Odell, was born in October 1907. James Gregory & Fannie Lee (Marshall) JOHNSTON moved from Bell to Nueces County before the 1920 census. Their children, grandchildren and grandchildren have migrated in and out of central TX from the 1890s to the present. Fannie Lee & Lucy Marshall were both born in TN, the daughters of Sarah (GRILLS) and Richard MARSHALL. Sarah died in childbirth after the 1880 census. The family were in Lincoln County TN at the time of the 1880 census. As yet no explanation for Fannie Lee being in Randolph county has been discovered. Research continues, any connections will be welcome. Imo's family will host the "James Gregory Johnston Family Reunion" in Waco 24 June 2000. Jonelle Ellis Russell <ljrussell@earthlink.net>

    3. Can anyone tell me how best to go about finding where my great grandfather is buried. He lived in Belton and raised his family there. His wife is buried in the North Belton cemetery with some of his sons but I can't find him. He died January 26, 1892 according to records of the family. Of course they didn't say where he was buried. When his wife E.E. Wellhausen was buried they stated on her tombstone that she was the wife of John Henry Wellhausen. I certainly would appreciate any help that anyone could give me. 3. I received an impressive number of researchers to add to the Bell County surname list. Now that all invalid e-mail addresses have been removed and many new ones added, feel free to take a look at the revised list: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbell/surname.htm Now that the surname list activity is somewhat back to normal, I have started working on the Bell County family website list. I removed a couple of invalid links and updated others. I am in the processing of confirming the contact e-mail addresses. If you run a genealogy site that includes Bell County family/families, drop me note with the surname, URL, and e-mail address. The current list is at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbell/families.htm Today, I also verified the links on the main Bell County page. Some of those were outdated and they have now been revised. All links on the main page should be current now. If you find any links on our various pages that no longer work, please let me know. After I get back from the Bell County events this weekend, my next project is work on a photo section for Bell County History. That obviously will take a little more time to accomplish. Hope to see you Saturday... Joe D. Deaver BellCoTX Coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbell/ ancestry@deaver.com

    3. Dear Jackie, Although I do not know you or your family, my heart goes out to you on the death of your mother. My own mother died almost 15 years ago, and I still miss her and think of her almost every day. I hope you have lots of wonderful memories and a good family to sustain you. I will pray for your peace. Love, Jeanne Hale Kilgore TX

    3. My mother, ROWENA ANN BEARD JOHNSON, passed away on Tuesday. She was born in Granger, Texas to Robert Carl Beard and Annie Maude Bryan Beard on December 30, 1916. Services are scheduled for 9am Friday morning at Weed-Corley-Fish in Austin. Visitation at Weed-Corley-Fish in Austin at 6:30-pm on Thursday evening. Would appreciate if this could be printed even though not a QUERY. She went to school in Granger, graduating from Granger High School in 1935. Maybe some of her classmates will see this. She came to Austin in '36 and married Wesley R. Johnson. They lived in Austin all their lives. Thanks so much. Jackie Morgan

    3. This is the info for the 9:30am event from the Charter Oak website: ----------- BELTON take Waco Rd from East 6th (turn between Texaco and Exxon gasoline outlets), drive to and cross the Leon River Bridge, about 1/4 mile beyond the bridge turn into the first gate on the right. TEMPLE take Charter Oak Rd turning west on the road behind Tranum Buick, drive to within about 1/4 mile of the Leon River Bridge, turn left into the gate. The Charter Oak Tree is on land belonging to the Brazos Electric Cooperative. This event will commemorate the election held under the shade of the Charter Oak Tree in April 1850 when voters affirmed that they wanted to proceed with forming their new county. The state of Texas had authorized formation of Bell County in a law that went into effect on January 22, 1850, and now area voters had to demonstrate that it was their desire to create their new, local government. BRING YOUR OWN LAWN CHAIR or BLANKET as there are no seats available otherwise. The program will last approximately 45 minutes. ---------------- Information on all the day's events can be found at: http://www.vvm.com/sqc/charteroak.html I am trying my best to make it to the 9:30 event, but I will have to leave Dallas pretty early to do so. I will definitely be at the other three events. Still looking for a blue ribbon to wear. (Has to be one that looks ok on a guy...heh.) Joe D. 1. [TXBELL-L] A Month for Family History
    2. Jonelle Ellis Russell
    3. Hi All, I wish I could be in Texas to meet with you all this weekend. I'll be at a meeting in CA thinking about you. However, maybe you can take a minute to talk about this project. I believe we can make it happen if we each plan one or more events. A Month Dedicated to Family History October as month dedicated to celebrating family history continues to be discussed among genealogist and family historians across the country. We can make it happen beginning with at grass roots level with individual and collective effort. Individuals can present ideas and suggestions of ways to promote the importance of family history to local and national organizations and volunteering to lead or serve on committees to spearhead the effort to implement those ideas. Possible activities might include some of the following; • PBS stations were receive notification of the June release of “Ancestors II” about March 1. Since we will need to contact our local PBS station to encourage the series be aired on our local channel we could suggest the timing be September into October. • Schedule an “Introductory to Genealogy Workshop” in your community. If possible this could be scheduled in the local genealogical repository. • Request local libraries feature displays of Family History material during the month of October. • Contact editors of local publications to request that they do a feature on Family History during that period. • Contact area Museums, Historical, Ethnic and Religious Organizations suggesting they might do a display, newsletter article, or program highlighting important role of families have held in the history of our community. • The program for meetings schedule in October could be a presentation by a popular local personality who can do a presentation related to the History of Local Families. • Contact the local Family History Center to determine if they may be scheduling classes or activities during October. Local societies might volunteer to co-host a Family History Center open house. • Local Bookstores could be notified that October is Family History Month and suggest they might display various books dealing with family history. • Contact local service clubs and organizations volunteering to provide a speaker for an October meeting. • We can contact the Board of Supervisors, local Mayors, and Chambers of Commerce requesting they declare October as Family History Month. The array of ideas to promote family history is limited only by the imagination and dedication of those engaged in making things happen. As with research it starts at home. Begin with a committee with an innovative chairperson to explore the possibilities and develop a workable plan. Involve as many members as possible, calling upon them to volunteer their special skills. Be prepared to support those who agree to participate. This may involve providing posters, writing articles for the media, providing speakers, and possibly even writing the official proclamation. Genealogist and family historians have a proven record of success of cooperative efforts. A month celebrating family history will increase awareness of our accomplishments and can highlight the importance of knowledge of the history of one’s family. Heightened awareness is likely to increase interest in research and perhaps encourage additional support for records access. Thanks for your support, Jonelle Ellis Russell <ljrussell@earthlink.net>

    3. For those of you interested in Fort Hood early history, as it affects Bell County (and Coryell) might be interested in visiting the Earth Day Display as cited below (Fort Hood Sentinel): EARTH DAY DISPLAY!!!! On April 21, 2000, from 8 AM til 2 PM, the CRM will host an Earth Day Display in the III Corps Headquarters (Building 1001). Archaeologists from the CRM office will be present to talk with interested people about Fort Hood and its cultural resource management effort. Artifacts collected from the Fort Hood installation will be on display, and questions will be welcomed about them The history and archaeology of the Fort Hood lands is varied and fascinating. If you would like to learn more about archaeology and the Cultural Resource Management Program at Fort Hood please stop by the Earth Day Display in the West Atrium of Building 1001 (III Corps Headquarters) on April 21. The display will be set up from 8 AM – 2 PM, and the archaeologists will be available to talk with you and answer your questions. The display will include artifacts collected from different sites on post, and information highlighting historical sites and commemorative markers. If you are interested in the historical context of the Fort Hood lands, the information will soon be available on CD and posted on the web.. There is a terribly-rough web site for the Fort Hood Archaeological Society (which doesn't exist) that also has some information for the Cultural Resource Managmement team, at: www.rootsweb.com/~txfhas The Cultural Resource Management office has a place-holder page on the Fort Hood server at: http://www.dpw.hood.army.mil/HTML/ENV/cultural.htm The FHAS web page is just a start-up idea I had, so don't blame the CRM people for any content... the page idea isn't really sponsored, at least as yet. If you think re-starting the Fort Hood Archaeological Society would be a good thing for our area, let Dr. Cheryl Huckerby or Stephanie Bandy know, at the addresses on the various pages.
