    3. The Bell County Museum sells Volumes I & II in their bookstore: http://www.vvm.com/~museum/#BOOKS I believe marriage records at the county clerk's office go back to just prior to 1900. (I located my great grandparents' 1893 marriage certificate at the office in Belton.) Check this site for contact information: http://www.bellcountytx.com/services.htm There are various libraries in Bell County which might have the census records. There is contact info for many of these libaries on our local resources site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbell/resource.htm Hope this helps... Joe D. 2. Hi Joe - I thought the purpose of a LIST was to share searching accomplishments, problems, suggestions and assitance with others from a common area. It seems that all should be included in what's going on rather then two or a few. If it is for two or a few then the email should go direct. Right? It would eliminate unnecessary email checking. Let me climb down off my soap bex and ask, "what is volume III ?" Tom J. TomJohn01@aol.com

    2. Jackie Morgan
    3. Census records say he was born in 1825 in Missouri. Somehow he got to Texas. No idea how. But in March, 1850 he married Lavica DYCHES, daughter of William C. DYCHES. They lived in Williamson, but when Bell Co., was formed they were living in Bell Co., just passed the Williamson Co. line. That is where my great-grandmother, Nancy Ann Bingham was born in 1866. The family moved to Milam Co. in the 1870s. James S. Bingham died in 1882 in Milam Co. and is buried there. Anyone with additional information, please contact me. Jackie Morgan

    1. [TXBELL-L] WADE (or Waid) in BELL CO. TX.
    2. Geoffrey S. Pope
    3. My surname is POPE and my late mother's maiden name was WAID, a variant of WADE. My mother grew up near Pittsburgh, and my Dad in the Florida panhandle. My WADE/WAID ancestors were first in Scituate, Mass. about 1634 and that line comes through Seth Wade/Waid b. abt. 1765, fought in the Revolution, and d. abt. 1821. Seth removed from Mass. to Ontario Co., New York, about 1807 and three of his sons moved to Crawford Co., Penna. about 1816. Seth's all-but-certain father (the courthouse records perished in a fire) was Capt. Amos Wade, also a Revolutionary Patriot, of Plymouth or Bristol Co. in Mass., who had two wives and something on the order of 15 children. (Capt. Amos had a brother, Ichabod [II] Wade, who is said to have been a Minute Man at the Lexington, Mass. alarm). According to one authoritative WADE source, many of the offspring of Capt. Amos went South, some of them becoming shipbuilders. Strange to say, in many out-of-the-way Southern places where I am finding POPES, my father's kin, I'm also finding WADES. Such is true of Bell County, which seems to have been the last home of John M. Pope b. abt. 1802 and d. bef. 1880, moved from Montgomery Co., TN to Bell Co., TX in the 1850s with wife Rebecca and sons John T. (b. TN abt. 1837/8) James S. (b. TN abt. 1838/9) and Green J. (b. TN abt. 1844/5) (all 3 sons were in Co. I, 17th Tex. Inf., CSA). John M. Pope, the father of the family, was a brother of my second grat-grandfather William Stuart Pope 1789-1837 of Jackson Co., Florida. Do any of the WADES in Bell Co., TX trace their ancestry back to Capt. Amos, or to any of the WADES who were in the coastal counties (esp. Plymouth and Bristol) of Massachusetts from the 1630s? Please e-mail me offlist if so. Thanks!.

    1. [TXBELL-L] POPE in Bell Co. aft. 1860
    2. Geoffrey S. Pope
    3. Hello Bell County: I believe, but am trying to confirm, that a household of my kinsmen who were in the 1850 census in Montgomery County, Tennessee moved to Bell County, Texas sometime before 1860. Montgomery Co. is in Middle Tennessee, and borders Kentucky. As appearing in the 1850 census in Montgomery Co., TN, the family was John M. Pope age 48 bridge agent b. NC [> b. abt. 1802] wife Rebecca [Looters] age 43 b. TN [> abt. 1807] son John T. Pope age 12 b. TN [> abt. 1838] son James S. Pope age 11 b. TN [> abt. 1839] son Green J. Pope age 5 b. TN [> abt. 1845] daughter Margaret age 1 b. TN [> abt. 1849] My relationship to this family is that John M. Pope was a brother of my second great-grandfather, William Stuart (I) Pope 1789-1837 of Jackson County, Florida. I know that John M. Pope moved, probably from somewhere in South Carolina or poss. the Savannah area, to Jackson Co. in the FL panhandle about 1820, as did William and two of their sisters. I know also that John M. Pope moved to Tennessee following his marriage in Lawrence Co., TN to Rebecca Looters in 1827, and was in the 1840 census in Montgomery Co., TN. Now we POPE researchers were until lately wholly stumped as to what became of John M. and family after 1850: they fell off the radar screen, genealogically speaking. Of course, the troubling possibility haunted us that the sons might have stepped over the Kentucky line, and fallen in with evil companions (e.g., Federals!) during the Late Unpleasantness. But, to our relief, I find online muster roll for Company I, 17th Tex. Vol. Inf., CSA, includes the following: Sgt. John T. Pope Pvt. James S. Pope Pvt. G. J. Pope While this is not proof positive, we've got three POPE lads here, all "secesh" and in the same unit, and even the middle initials match up. So I'm pretty confident, but am seeking to prove to my own satisfaction at least, that these three Confederate soldiers are the sons of John M. Pope, and the same boys who were in the earlier, 1850 census "up north" as we say, in Tennessee. (From the Florida panhandle, Chattanooga is viewed as being just south of the Arctic Circle). Two would-be-helpful online researchers have contacted me, one saying that a John M. Pope appears in Bell Co., TX census for 1860, and another that Green Pope is there in 1880. However, neither gave me place of birth/date of birth (age) info from those censuses that would have to be matched up (esp. as "John Pope" is, to put it mildly, a common name, even if "Green Pope" is not). Note also in passing that a Fannin Co., TX CSA Unit (9th Tex. Cavalry, Co. B) also shows a Green Pope on its muster roll (could be same man as was in 17th, as transfers etc. were pretty common, also AWOLS returning from sick/wounded furloughs sometimes were unable to get back to original unit and signed on with a different one). Also, there is thought to have been another, older Green Pope: poss. a brother of John M., and born in the 1790s and migrated to TX in the 1850s. Any info gratefully received. Geoffrey Pope

    3. Keith, This may be a needle in the hay stack but here goes. The Clark name stands out in our family history affecting Bell County, Texas residents the Stuarts and Riggs. Margaret Riggs father was drowned on the Medina River and buried on the Clark Farm back in Setp. 16, 1867 Thomas Riggs was buried near where he drowned. These two families Clark's and Riggs had ties in Arkansas as with Texas. Would be interesting if you found them in the Bandera, Texas area. Let me know if this helped you , this is all I know that may possibly help you in your search. Happy hunting and have a good day.
