I had just about given up on finding this family. I had found them on the McLennan Co., TX census in 1880, but didn't have access to the censuses after that. I was puzzled because the copy I saw online said "other" for all these rather than "son" or "daughter." Undoubtedly that was just an error. Sorry I can't help you as a descendant. I was working on this family because my gggrandmother Naomi Bland was a sister to your Calvin. She died in 1833 in Pulaski Co., AR, but her husband Benjamin Clemens brought their two children William and Lucinda to Dallas Co., AR before 1850. Many of their descendants are still in south Arkansas. Thanks again.

    1. [TXBELL] Marshall P. Rogers(Rodgers)
    2. NEAL MULLINS
    3. Hello list, Would anyone on the Bell Co. list be able to tell me if there is a record of a Marshall P. Rogers(Rodgers) dieing there? We have several members of our Rogers branch who married in Bell County (William Alford Rogers md Martha Rogers - November 24, 1878), (William Hull Kuykendall md. Sarah Elizabeth Rogers - July 27, 1879), (Joel Benjamin Rogers md. Mary Emma Bartley - March 22, 1880) as well as others. Marshall P. Rogers moved his family into McLennan Co., TX around 1870 after moving out of Jackson Parish, LA where some of the fierce fighting of the Civil War was taking place. He and family were on the 1870 Census in McLennan Co. and the family lived in several of the counties from there to Bell Co. I haven't been able to find a death record for him or his wife Sarah yet and I know that Sarah was in Bell Co. but can't find out if Marshall was there as well. If anyone has any information about this family, I would be very grateful for the information. Thank You, Eileen Rogers Mullins [email protected]

    3. Along the same line, my ancestor and his brother were Civil War Veterans out of Jefferson County, Alabama who eventually settled in Bell County, Texas. I believe there was a Civil War Veterans group that met in Bell County and David Hembree was the chaplain at some time. I would love a photo of that group.

    3. Throughout Texas, men fought in The War Between the States. Some even survived to attend reunions held in the counties they were living. I just now received one from a very generous gentleman pertaining to Erath County. I also have one taken in Hamilton County, but unlike the Erath photo, Hamilton isn't indexed with the names. Although I do know two of the people shown. Now, to get to my point. Does anyone else out there have such photos they would care to share with us all? I'll certainly share the one of Hamilton Co. to anyone who wants it. Ric Gordon

There is a museum at the railroad depot in the town that has info and a write up on that wreck and some debris. It was called the "Crash at Crush". If there are other wrecks near there I would think they would have that info too. The "Crush" wreck had one or two people who died. It was in a made up town called "Crush". It was a big event at the time with people coming from all over who paid to see the great crash. Two trains were staged to run into each other at top speed. The Historical Marker was stolen so the actual spot is a little hard to find.

You can read about it in "Handbook of Texas Online". I thought it might be the one you are asking about, though it is earlier than the time period you mention. You can go to www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online, enter "train wreck", in quotes, and get about 7 articles. Look at #3, I think it is, and if you think this wreck is the one you are interested in, I might suggest you contact the newspapers in Waco, Hillsboro, or Temple, or even the MKT, for more information. 1. [TXBELL] BELL County Poorhouse Information
    2. Poor House Lady
    3. We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We have just published a newly designed page for TEXAS Poorhouse History. We have added specific county pages for those counties which have substantial poorhouse information. BELL County is featured! We are directing readers' attention to a rather amazing document which has quietly been published on the TXGenWeb site for Bell County: a rare (for Texas) full transcription of the poorhouse record book. It was unusual to find such a specific record book in Texas. And the author/transcriber, Janet Clayton Gardner, did much more than just transcribe. She also carefully researched the history of this poorhouse and interviewed people who lived and/or worked there. Photographs make the experience of reading this material quite wonderful! DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on TEXAS on the table of states, and finally on BELL County on the table of counties. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS (which explains why you might climb over your own "brick walls" at the poorhouse. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newsletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
