Looks like the weekend of November 7-9 is the 42nd Annual Scottish Clan Gathering & Highland Games in Salado. I have been wanting to attend one of these, but never managed to make it down to Bell County the appropriate weekend each year. (My Deaver ancestors came from Scotland to Maryland in 1657.) Looks like I have some incentive to go this year, since I have been asked to be one of the speakers at the November 7 (Friday) genealogy workshop. My presentation will be covering the TXGenWeb project, naturally touching upon the great work our volunteers have done for the Bell County website. Most likely, I will be scheduled for the afternoon, since I'm driving down that morning. Still looking around for an LCD projector to rent or borrow for my laptop. It looks like the genealogy workshop is about 10am-5pm on that Friday and has an admission of $30.00. For more information about the gathering and games, go to this website: http://www.ctam-salado.org/scottish-games/ According to the website, the Salado Gathering and Highland Games is the primary fund raiser for the Central Texas Area Museum in Salado. I've been to the museum on a couple of occasions. The genealogy workshop will be held in Scots Clan Hall at the museum. The organizers just e-mailed me a flyer about the speakers: -------------------------------- Bill Buckner, currently manager of the Periodicals/Genealogy Division of the Waco-McLennan County Library will speak on Genealogical Resources in Texas and Beyond with an emphasis on locating digitized source material. Bill Buckner is a librarian with over twelve years of professional experience. Bill has served on the Genealogy Committee of the American Library Association for the past three years and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Music from Southwestern University and a Master of Science degree in Library Science from the University of North Texas. Laverne Owens, with the National Archives and Records Administration, Southwest Regional Repository, will address doing genealogical research at NARA Records Centers, how records are organized and how to access them. Elizabeth Chennault, will speak on Medical and Scientific Applications in Genealogical Research. Elizabeth Chennault is the owner of Heritage History, offering seminars for Scottish/Celtic festivals and events, genealogists, schools, and travel groups. She also lectures on topics in military history and the history of medicine. She is membership coordinator for the Texas Scottish Festival Association, past state commissioner for Clan Farquharson, and holds BS and MA degrees from the University of Texas at Arlington. Dr. Buddy Patterson will speak on resources available at the Harold B. Simpson History Complex at Hill College in Hillsboro. The History Complex includes the Confederate Research Center, the Texas Heritage Museum, and Library, will speak on resources available at the History Complex. Dr. Patterson is a retired dentist with many years of experience in Confederate history and genealogy. Joe D. Deaver will present a program on the TXGenWeb Project. Joe has been the webmaster and coordinator for the Bell County Genealogy and History website on the project since October of 1999. An avid genealogist and Texas history buff, he finds the volunteer work with the project very enjoyable. Joe's own Deaver ancestors came to Bell County, TX in the 1870s from TN and GA and resided in the Taylors Valley area. Further back, in 1657, his ancestors Richard and Grace Deaver came from Scotland to Anne Arrundel County Maryland aboard the ship Lionheart. -------------------------------- Anyway, though some of you might be interested. I am not affiliated with the museum or event, but it sound like a very fascinating weekend for Bell County. Joe D. Deaver TXBELL Coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbell
Are your familiar with Dennis Cryer, a volunteer who occasionally cleans up East Belton Cemetery? He was featured at one time on Texas Country Reporter. I have contact information if you need it. I have also post quite a few photos from that cemetery: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbell/cem/ebelton/ Good luck with the project. If you find such a lawyer, let me know. I am working on a cemetery association for another old cemetery close to that one. Joe D. Anyone in the community (living in the area) interested in forming such an association is requested to contact me as soon as possible. There may be an opportunity to obtain funds for perpetual care and historic recognition for this cemetery ... but this involves a deadline coming up soon. Please let me hear from you if you have ancestors in this cemetery ... even if you cannot participate in the formation of an association. The services of a lawyer who is willing to work pro bono or on a contingency basis to preserve this historic black cemetery will also be needed. Would you like to volunteer or recommend someone? Thanks! Linda Crannell

Ok, made a few more updates to the TXBELL website the past few days: - Added a photo page for a Williams family from Bell County (thanks to Larry Wilson for the photos!) - Added a photo page for the Powers family of Bell County (of Nannie's Scrapbook fame, thanks to Janet Gardner!) - Updated the People Photos page - Added several new listings to the surname pages (and deleted a few invalid ones) - Validated all links on the Cemetery Central page (updated two links) http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbell/whatsnew.htm Enjoy! Eagle Springs is listed in the Handbook of Texas and is still listed on most maps. http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/EE/hte3.html The Eagle Springs Baptist Church is still standing with a state historical marker (see the Texas Historical Commission's online atlas of markers on its site). Sorry about that. Robert Halley was born May 14, 1823 in Macon, Bibb Co., Ga. He married Lydia Anderson Ederington on Aug 16 1849 in Lenark, Bradley Co., Arkansas. They had 8 children, most of them did not marry.. Robert died Oct 5, 1875 in Salado, Bell Co., Tx. His wife moved to Dallas Tx and lived with her daughter, Mimmie Lydia Smith, where she died on Dec 7, 1927. I had copies of his service record when he was in the Mexican War and I have Lydia's pension application regarding Robert. Apparently, in Salado, there is a Bed & Breakfast type house that is called the Halley house. This was his house back in the day. What I am looking for is if any one has pictures of him and Lydia. Also any other type of information that I can obtain. I am also looking for someone to take a photograph of his grave site in Salado (I do not have the name of the cemetery at time of writing, but can obtain quickly.) I would also like to corespond with anyone else who is related. Also, I have another relative that resided in Salado, John Boyd (Burton) Harrell. He was married to Sara Jane Ederington, sister to Lydia Halley, on Apr 28, 1874. I do not know when or where he died. I presume he died in Salado, but I have not been able to find the connection. Sara died June 5, 1896 in Florence, Williamson Co., Tx. The Harrell's and Robert Halley, were neighbors in Ga before they moved to Texas. I am looking for pictures or any other information on these people. Thank you again, Chad Harrell Yeager >From: "Joe D. I found marriage records for my Gr Gr Grandparents, Harvey & Caroline (Crawford) Howard this way! I really didn't expect a gravemarker to exist, because of passage of years! Caroline & Harvey Howard are both interred at Eagle Springs Cemetary in Coryell Co. (Catherine Crawford was Caroline's Mom and was alive for the 1850 census (Milam-Williamson district) Mostly, I really wanted an idea of the Cedar Creek location and you answerered that for me!
