Thanks for the reply, Pat. I actually have intended to check on HIGHTOWER in Hood County. I was in Granbury recently and noticed a sign on one of the downtown buildings - advertising an attorney named Hightower. The first spouse was J.M. Cox - a long shot, but that is all I have. They likely married around 1891 in Bell County. Alice and J.M. had two children - Frank and Robie (Robert?). Frank died as an infant and is buried next to his grandmother in the Dallas Cemetery near Holland. I have no further info on Robie. Alice had a brother named Robert - this son could be a namesake. I appreciate any assistance you might be able to provide. Larry
Check Hood co TX for HIGHTOWERS. Prominent surname there from what I have read. Also, I may be able to help you with the COX surname as I have a bit on the COX in Bell co. I am not a Cox researcher but one of my BOONES married a COX and I copied some info on them from the Belton Public Library , Bell co. As this is the holiday season, I won't be able to look through all my old notebooks at this time but will after the New Year. I also have to reply to another COX researcher so if y'all will be patient with me , I promise to get back to you. IF NOT, please feel free to write me directly with a "what happened " :) Pat Tennon Lawton, OK [email protected] wrote: > > Alice Cora Williams was born in Alabama in 1871. Alice Cora Williams was born in Alabama in 1871. Her family migrated to Bell County, Texas, circa 1883. Around 1891, she married J.M. Cox and they had two children. I do not know the fate of Mr. Cox, but she later married a HIGHTOWER. In June 1935, Mrs. J.O. HIGHTOWER of Cameron, Texas, is listed as a suvivor in the obituary of her brother. It is believed that she married a HIGHTOWER. Searching census records, marriage records and cemetery records in Bell and Milam Counties, I cannot find a trace of Alice Cora Hightower. I would appreciate any small clue that might lead to a discovery. Larry

Thank you for the poem. I wish Santa would come by and file my papers and bring down my brick walls instead of giving me presents that I do not need. Merry Christmas to all who believe and I hope you all have a fantastic 2004. Robin Mitchner
A fellow coordinator recently posted this to the TXGenWeb discussion list. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season. Enjoy! Joe D. Deaver TXBELL Coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbell ========================================================== 'Twas The Night Before Christmas" Genealogist Version It was the night before Christmas when all through the house, Not a creature was stirring, not even my spouse. The dining room table with clutter was spread With pedigree charts and with letters which said.... "Too bad about the data for which you wrote Sank in a storm on an ill fated boat." Stacks of old copies of wills and the such Were proof that my work had become much too much. Our children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads. And I at my table was ready to drop >From work on my album with photos to crop. Christmas was here, and of such was my lot That presents and goodies and toys I forgot. Had I not been so busy with grandparents' wills, I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills. While others had bought gifts that would bring Christmas cheer; I'd spent time researching those birthdates and years. While I was thus musing about my sad plight, A strange noise on the lawn gave me a great fright. Away to the window I flew in a flash, Tore open the drapes and I yanked up the sash. When what to my wondering eyes should appear? But an overstuffed sleigh and eight small reindeer. Up to the housetop the reindeer they flew, With a sleigh full of toys, and old Santa Claus too. And then in a twinkle, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of thirty-two hoofs. The TV antenna was no match for their horns, Look at our roof with hoof-prints adorned. As I drew in my head, and bumped it on the sash, Down the cold chimney fell Santa - KER-RASH! "Dear" Santa had come from the roof in a wreck, And tracked soot on the carpet, (I could wring his short neck!) Spotting my face, good old Santa could see I had no Christmas spirit you'd have to agree. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work And filled all the stockings, (I felt like a jerk). Here was Santa, who'd brought us such gladness and joy; When I'd been too busy for even one toy. He spied my research on the table all spread "A genealogist!" He cried! (My face was all red!) "Tonight I've met many like you", Santa grinned. As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned. I gazed with amazement - the cover it read "Genealogy Lines for Which You Have Plead." "I know what it's like as a genealogy bug," He said as he gave me a great Santa Hug. "While the elves make the sleighful of toys I now carry, I do some research in the North Pole Library! A special treat I am thus able to bring, To genealogy folks who can't find a thing. Now off you go to your bed for a rest, I'll clean up the house from this genealogy mess." As I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee, I looked back at Santa who'd brought much to me. While settling in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle, To his team which then rose like the down of a thistle And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight, "Family History is Fun! Merry Christmas! Goodnight!"
Joe is correct. I contacted the Land Office in Austin Tx about my greatgrandfather's deed in Bell County about a week ahead of time. I was traveling to Austin and wanted to stop in and get a copy of the deed. If you go to Austin yourself, let them know ahead of time what you are looking for and what copies you want. They have a lot of files there and it takes time and personnel to search. They have the orginals. Otherwise they will not make copies while you wait, they will mail them to you. The prices for copies are listed on their web site listed below. They were very nice and helpful while I was there. I even got to examine the originals. They even have maps of the county with each deed listed. Good Luck and Happy Holidays, Jo L in TN [email protected] wrote: Surnames: McClung Message Board Post: I do see that Henry C. Land patent was for at least 570 acres. Henry died in Houston, Texas in either 1838, 46, or 48, and his heirs claimed the land patent in 1851. On the land patent record that I have found thus far, it says "Class: Mil 2nd." Does this mean that the land was given to Henry for military service? This is important to me. I would appreciate any help anyone can lend. Thanks, Anita McClung
