If that site is south of 2nd, that's the location for the county clerk's office. The north side of 2nd are vacant lots next to the road. Charlotte Allman

The smoke stack was struck by lightning in the late 1930's and a big chunk was broken out, and they tore it down not long after that. If there was a cemetery anywhere in that area I was not aware of it. The only ones I knew about were the North Belton Cemetery, South Belton Cemetery, County Home, and the Black Cemetery off N. Main.

Seems like I have been down that way before, but it's been a while. The closest cemetery I know of to that is South Belton, but it is a few blocks away and fairly large. If you don't find someone who lives locally to there to check it out, I'll keep it in mind when I am in Bell County in a few weeks. Are you looking for a specific burial? Joe D. Looks like there is a Scottish ancestry seminar going on at the Central Texas Museum in Salado this weekend, in case anyone plans to be in the area. There was a flyer attachment included as well. If anyone would like that sent to them, drop me a e-mail off list. FYI... Joe D. The program is called "Lochaber No More: The Scottish Emigrant Experience in North America". The cost is $10 at the door just to cover the museum's expenses. The program will include presentations of Scottish music by pianist Roy Finney and brief presentations by Anne Marie Umholtz whose emigrant ancestors worked the New Mexico mining camps and Tiffany Rowe Millsap who will talk about a recent visit to Scotland. Come out and join us for a celebration of Scottish history and heritage in the picturesque setting of Salado. If you have questions please feel free to email or call me. Hope to see you there! Sewell-Long Hospital is long gone. It is now a parking lot for the county offices and was on the corner of Pearl and 1st Street. Both of my kids were born there, the last in 1960. It was vacant for a number of years before it was bulldozed. My son was born in Sewell-Long Hospital in 1955. The hospital closed many years ago and was turned into an apartment house. Later it was torn down and I think there is a vacant lot there now. It was on Pearl Street between 1st and 2nd Avenue. Since the name of everything has changed and I no longer live in Belton its hard to describe, but it was behind the bus station on Main Street. The old Carnegie Library (now the Bell County Museum) is directly across the street from the old Post Office (now ???) and the bus station was in the middle of the block next to the Post Office. It is some sort of government office now; I think Soil Conservation, or maybe even some kind of probation office. Sewell Hospital was a long, low one story building. It replaced the old two-story hospital that was on the corner of Pearl and 2nd Avenue, which was turned into a hotel when the new hospital was built. I believe that building is gone now, too. The only picture I have seen of the Sewell-Long Hospital is on an aerial picture of Belton my dad took years ago, and you can't really tell anything about the hospital in the picture it's so small.
