I copied this from a message posted by Robert W. King on one of the list I receive. If you are searching for military graves or other veterans information you may find this site and the links from it helpful. Jo Russell Hi folks! The V.A. has gone on line with info on where veterans are buried, including Arlington (since 1999) and other National Cemeteries. Approximately 80,000 names are currently on file. They hope to also include the locations of deceased military personnel where grave markers were ordered in the future. The site is www.cem.va.gov

One of my earliest memories involves the old compress building. My brother told me it happened on his birthday, February 13, 1933 and I was too young to possibly remember it, but I can still visualize the scene from our front yard on East Street. There was a lot of publicity that a lady was going to parachute from an airplane and land on the courthouse lawn. Everybody in town was watching for her to land. Airplanes were scarce, and the idea of a lady jumping out with a parachute was really big news. We only lived a few blocks from the courthouse, so had a good view. The whole neighborhood watched and watched, and when she jumped I never did see her, but the rest of the family did. The wind blew her away from the courthouse and she landed on the roof of the old compress building on Blair Street, which years later was Griggs Equipment Company. She had jumped from the plane, but when she landed she was afraid to jump the distance from the building to the top of a boxcar parked next to it so she could climb down the ladder on the boxcar and get down. The fire department had to get her down. Frances
Thanks for the link to the old pictures of Belton. I didn't recognize any specific houses, but they could have been almost any house in Belton before World War II. I had forgotten those narrow gravel streets with no curbs or sidewalks. That was typical until after the war. Only a few main streets were paved before 1946. There were a lot of nicer houses in Belton, since areas around railroad tracks are normally not as nice as other part of town, but there were many of the type shown in the pictures. I had said in an earlier e-mail that the old smoke stack from the oil mill was torn down shortly after it was struck by lightning in the late 30's; my husband has told me it was still there in 1951 when we married and he moved to Belton. Frances
