Thanks for the info, Tammy. In reference to the Tree Stump with the Gillespie name carved in it at the Bastrop Courthouse, James Hiram Gillespie continues to be a big mystery for me. I am certain that he was the County Clerk of Bastrop for about 10 years. I'm fairly certain he carried the rank of "Capt." with the Bastrop Volunteers Regiment during the 1840s. He also served on the Board of Trustees of an old school academy in Bastrop, so he appeared to be fairly prominent in the early history of Bastrop. However, the Gillespie name seems to show up as being spelled several different ways (I realize that this is common in geneology research). The Bastrop Historical Society sent me several references to J.H. Gillespie, Jas. Gillespie, Capt. Gillespie, etc. I can't determine if this is one person or several different Gillespies. Nowhere in the Bastrop Census does any other J.H. Gillespie appear except my James Hiram Gillespie. The Historical Society shows 2 entries in the Fairview Cemetary for a Capt. J.H. Gillespie. Neither of them has the correct date of birth for my James Hiram Gillespie. Could this be an error in bookkeeping, records, etc.?. I know you don't have the answers to this but I hope someone on the list my have a clue to this puzzle. Thanks again for the terrific job you are doing on this list.
