    1. [TXBASTRO-L] Birth and Death indexes online
    2. http://www.tdh.state.tx.us/bvs/registra/bdindx.htm TEXAS BIRTH AND DEATH INDEXES Availability Birth indexes from 1903-1925 and death indexes from 1903-1963 are available on microfiche only. As of March 2000, birth indexes from 1926-1995 and death indexes from 1964-1998 are available on the Internet, microfiche or CD-ROM. Death indexes will be available approximately six months after the end of the index year. Birth indexes will be available approximately 42 months after the end of the index year. The time lag for the birth index is necessary in order to protect the confidentiality of adoptions and paternity determinations. Marriage indexes are available on microfiche or CD-ROM from 1966-present and divorce indexes are available from 1968-present. [They may be available on the Internet in the future (depends on customer demand).] Cost The birth and death general and summary indexes available on the Internet are free of charge Most computer viewers won't handle the large files so download their viewer first. Then download the files. They are large. I tried to open one year in wordpad and it took 5 minutes for it to do any keystroke. I used their viewer and was moving real fast in my searches. Now, for the adventurous who want to help with a project. You can download a year, open it in a database file (they say Microsoft Access works great) , have it get the Bastrop files, save it as a separate database, convert it to a .txt file and submit it to the Texas Archives page. There are some volunteers doing this now for certain years or counties. Seems like this project could go real fast as the computer does all the work. The slowest time will be waiting for the file to download and upload. Send completed year to dataman@telepath.com (Gene Phillips) for uploading. You can do the whole year separating each county out or just grab Bastrop info. We need to get these files on line before some legislation comes along and stops it.
