    1. [TXBASTRO-L] Recent uploads to Bastrop page
    2. We have been given a gift in the form of newspaper extracts from the Bastrop Advertisor 1854-1881. Sara, the submitter, owns microfilm that contains the Bastrop Advertisor on them and a few years ago, for a project, she pulled names, dates, etc out and typed them up. She has gratiously submitted her work to the Bastrop County website. The amazing thing to me is that she doesn't have ancestors from here but just chose Bastrop County for her project. We can make her an honorary cousin. The first file that has been uploaded is Bastrop area businesses, by date then alpha by person's name (and includes the date listed in the newspaper). These are from 1854-1879. I am splitting up the other file, containing all other information from 5/27/1854 to 2/26/1881, into smaller files, by date and will upload these as soon as I finish. She has more notes to type up and will forward those later. She also has another film, not indexed, that she is willing to do lookups for if the date of the event is known (such as death date). I will put the specific information in the Lookup section of the Bastrop page. If you don't have access to the microfilm and would like a copy of a page that is mentioned in the extracts, to receive the complete article, Sara would be happy to do that for reimbursement of expenses (one whole dollar) that will help with gas to the library, postage, and copy fee. Sara is as excited about this project as we are so if you find her information beneficial to your research, please let her know. Her email address is at the top of the page with the abstract/extract. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Curtis Craig for sharing his obits with us on the Craig and Outlaw families from McDade. Good Work! PS. The Pettytown reunion is the first Sunday in May at the Pettytown Cemetery. Bring a dish. A special MyFamily.com website has been set up for Petty researchers. Look for Margie Petty's queries on the query page and email her if you want to subscribe to the site. Take Care! 1. [TXBASTRO-L] Birth and Death indexes online
    2. http://www.tdh.state.tx.us/bvs/registra/bdindx.htm TEXAS BIRTH AND DEATH INDEXES Availability Birth indexes from 1903-1925 and death indexes from 1903-1963 are available on microfiche only. As of March 2000, birth indexes from 1926-1995 and death indexes from 1964-1998 are available on the Internet, microfiche or CD-ROM. Death indexes will be available approximately six months after the end of the index year. Birth indexes will be available approximately 42 months after the end of the index year. The time lag for the birth index is necessary in order to protect the confidentiality of adoptions and paternity determinations. Marriage indexes are available on microfiche or CD-ROM from 1966-present and divorce indexes are available from 1968-present. [They may be available on the Internet in the future (depends on customer demand).] Cost The birth and death general and summary indexes available on the Internet are free of charge Most computer viewers won't handle the large files so download their viewer first. Then download the files. They are large. I tried to open one year in wordpad and it took 5 minutes for it to do any keystroke. I used their viewer and was moving real fast in my searches. Now, for the adventurous who want to help with a project. You can download a year, open it in a database file (they say Microsoft Access works great) , have it get the Bastrop files, save it as a separate database, convert it to a .txt file and submit it to the Texas Archives page. There are some volunteers doing this now for certain years or counties. Seems like this project could go real fast as the computer does all the work. The slowest time will be waiting for the file to download and upload. Send completed year to dataman@telepath.com (Gene Phillips) for uploading. You can do the whole year separating each county out or just grab Bastrop info. We need to get these files on line before some legislation comes along and stops it. 2. Hi, I am looking for information about James Franklin Cunningham who married Emily Scallons, probably in Bastrop, Texas. Children all born in Bastrop were: Gid (may have been Gideon) Tom (Thomas) Sarah Rebecca (Sallie) my grandmother b. 19 Oct 1889 d. 31 May 1980 Ida Lena Elword b. 2 Sept 1898 d. 22 Jan 1963 Frank b. 15 Mar 1895 d. 22 Dec 1917 Tradition says that one of the grandfathers, maybe James Franklin or maybe his father, was in English Navy and jumped ship when it arrived and went awol and ended up in Texas. Does anyone have a history like this in your family that might help make a connection. Thank you, Betty Wingo Crowley, Texas

    2. Richard Gillespie, DC
    3. Thanks for the info, Tammy. In reference to the Tree Stump with the Gillespie name carved in it at the Bastrop Courthouse, James Hiram Gillespie continues to be a big mystery for me. I am certain that he was the County Clerk of Bastrop for about 10 years. I'm fairly certain he carried the rank of "Capt." with the Bastrop Volunteers Regiment during the 1840s. He also served on the Board of Trustees of an old school academy in Bastrop, so he appeared to be fairly prominent in the early history of Bastrop. However, the Gillespie name seems to show up as being spelled several different ways (I realize that this is common in geneology research). The Bastrop Historical Society sent me several references to J.H. Gillespie, Jas. Gillespie, Capt. Gillespie, etc. I can't determine if this is one person or several different Gillespies. Nowhere in the Bastrop Census does any other J.H. Gillespie appear except my James Hiram Gillespie. The Historical Society shows 2 entries in the Fairview Cemetary for a Capt. J.H. Gillespie. Neither of them has the correct date of birth for my James Hiram Gillespie. Could this be an error in bookkeeping, records, etc.?. I know you don't have the answers to this but I hope someone on the list my have a clue to this puzzle. Thanks again for the terrific job you are doing on this list. 1. [TXBASTRO-L] census info
    2. Many of you would probably like to help submit information to the Bastrop page but don't know what is needed. Here's a thought: I'd like to build the census records around the indexes that are on line. I have copies of a lot of the pages from census' for my family. Each of you probably has pieces pertaining to your relatives, maybe even the whole page of the census. You've probably typed it up already and put it in your notes section of your database. You know for sure how the name is spelled. If you could send me an email with the year of the census, ED and page (if you have it) plus the information (whatever you've copied as in whole page or just a section of a page), I can add it under the name on the index. Later I can fill in the missing pieces by going over the census, making adjustments as necessary. Please put census info in the subject line of your email. If you'd like, I can add your email address after your family information so you can be contacted by other researchers. This can be for any of the census'. Also, if you have a scanner and don't want to type, scan the document and I will type it up (if I can read it) and put it on the page where it fits, such as obits, deeds, etc. Thanks! Don't forget this valuable resource. Texas also has census records beginning in 1850. You can write or visit the Catholic Arhives of Texas at this address: 1600 N. Congress, P. O. Box 13327, Capitol Station, Austin, Texas 78711 or call (512) 476-4888. They do charge $10/hour and $2.50 per record found or you can do your own research. You must know the name of the church or parish and/or the area (county) they lived in. There is no central index of names. My ancestors came to Texas in 1846 and my husband's in 1889. We have found a wealth of information through church records. Each church was responsible for keeping their own records. Some records were destroyed in fires as was the case in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Grimes County. "The earliest Catholic churches in what is now the State of Texas were: San Fernando (in modern day San Antonio) established 1739, San Elizario (El Paso), established 1777, San Augustin (Laredo), established 1789, St. Mary's (Victoria), established 1840, Sacred Heart (Nacogdoches), established 1847, and smaller missions sponsored by these churches. In 1847, the Diocese of Galveston was founded and new parishes were established." ASA HILL, (Please note that Asa is often confused with Abraham Webb Hill, a cousin of Asa's. In 1932, the book "Heroes of San Jacinto" by Dixon & Kemp, first incorrectly published Asa's name as Abraham Asa Webb Hill, and the error has been picked up and perpetuated since by subsequent researchers and authors.) He was born 1784 Martin Co., Edgecombe, NC; married ELIZABETH BARKSDALE, daughter of Jeffery (who was in the Revolutionary War) and Phebe Barksdale, October 6, 1808 at Sparta, Hancock Co., GA; Lived in Jasper Co., Hancock Co., & Muscogee Co., GA before 1834. He traveled to TX about 1834 with his son, Wm. C.A.J. Hill and nephew, Isaac Lafayette Hill, moving his family to TX in 1835, settling in Washington Co., and later Fayette Co., TX. He joined the Texas Army in 1836. (See Historical Hill Documents page) After the burning of Gonzales, Gen. Sam Houston ordered him to travel east to warn those in the path of the approaching Mexican Army, and consequently Asa did not serve! at the battle of San Jacinto. In 1839 he settled in Rutersville, Fayette Co., TX. He was part of the Somervell Expedition and the Mier Expedition. He was captured along with two of his sons, Jeffrey Barksdale and John C.C. Hill and was part of the "Black Bean Episode", where he drew a white bean and was spared execution by the Mexicans. He was released in 1843, but was weakened from the experience. He died July 15, 1844, (possibly 1845) Rutersville, Fayette Co., TX. His remains were removed from their original Cedar Creek site in 1973 and reinterred in the old City Cemetery at La Grange. After Asa died, Elizabeth married Alexander Thomson, Jr., May 28, 1850, Fayette Co., TX. Elizabeth was born Jan. 3, 1795, Troupe Co., GA; died Jan. 23, 1883, Waelder, TX and is interred in the Waelder Cemetery. One of the things I hope to catch up on next week during Spring Break is getting in touch with my friends and bring them up to date on the Texas Slavery Project ... http://www.texasslaveryproject.uh.edu It's very under construction, but it's a start--and the more hits I record, the better funding I'm likely to have! I'll be very glad to recieve comments, criticisms, & suggestions. Thank you. Eric * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Lynna Kay Shuffield P. O.
