I may be able to help a little bit. Tonie Elizabeth Hemphill was born 10/22/1856 and is the daughter of Cornelius Murphy Hemphill and Elizabeth Snoddy, (Cornelius is brother of William Augustus Hemphill) making Tonie the step-cousin of Lavina. I have another Toni Hemphill b. 1883 m. George McDonald, dau of Wade Charles Hemphill and Cuba Hemphill. The L. R. could be Lafayette and Rogers as Lafayette runs in the family and they also seem to name the kids for their friends. Marcus and Zeno (brothers of William and Cornelius) married Rogers girls. Just a thought. I am from the other Hemphill family in the area, living in Red Rock/Bateman area. Also looking for Hosea Leon and Naomi Estelle Smith Robinson. My garandfathers family. All from Bastrop Co. Thanks Ruth J. Day
Thanks, Ruth. However, my Powells migrated from Tallapoosa County, Alabama, to Troup/Heard Counties, Georgia to Union Parish, Louisiana, to Brown/San Saba Counties, Texas in 1897. I am reaseaching the Cunningham family of Bastrop County. My grandmother, Sarah Rebecca (Sallie) Cunningham was born 19 Oct 1889 in Bastrop Co., the daughter of James Franklin Cunninghamand Emily Scallon. Brothers and sisters were Elword, Thomas, Gideon, Ida and Lena. Does anyone have any connections to this family?? Betty Wingo
This letter is being written to request that you give Gaylon all possible support in his new endeavors. I know that he will fill the shoes of list administrator very well and will help to improve the list with all the new contributions. I want to thank all of you that have supported me in the year that I have served as list admin. Never once have I had to reprimand anyone for crossing the line between good and bad taste. YOU have been a very great group to work with. The problem has been and is the fact that I have no genealogical pursuit or research in Bastrop or surrounding counties. While I could give lip service to the duties assigned, the deep abiding interest just has not been there. I apologise for that. I wish you each and everyone all the best of luck with your future research. I know you will welcome Gaylon and lend assistance in any way that you can. You have been a great group to work with. Here's hoping that every stone you overturn will turn up a full dozen ancestors - just waiting to help you find more. I will be monitoring the list for a short time - just out of curiosity. The List now belongs to Gaylon and all questions and requests should be directed to his address. Maryann Dixon Moseby
Forwarding from another list: New announcement out of Brigham Young Univ: ************* Ancestors, the highly successful PBS series, is back with an updated format and 13 new episodes shot on location around the world. The new series emphasizes the world of records, making it an exciting research tool for beginning and seasoned genealogists alike. Whether your library has an extensive collection of local history and genealogy records or whether you get only an occasional query about family history, the combination of exciting research stories and expert advice in this series can help your patrons to get involved and to be successful in their search for roots. But Ancestors is more than simply a how-to PBS series. The project includes a number of educational materials, including: --an instructional website, with links, downloadable research forms, and information about record types (often as video clips!) --an online teacher's guide, designed for grades 7-12 or community education programs --am instructional guidebook, a step-by-step guide to the research process family historians follow --instructional videos, designed especially for use in classrooms and other teaching settings. For more information on any of these items, or for broadcast dates and times in your area, please visit us online at www.kbyu.org/ancestors We encourage you to send this message to other librarians and genealogists who may be interested in hearing about Ancestors. We appreciate your help in spreading the word and hope that this project will help your library patrons and other researchers find the best ways to search for ancestors. I do not recognize those names, but I do not know enough to rule it out, either. Here is the deal with the Huddlestons. On my father's side, I am descended from Eli HUDDLESTON Sr & Jr. The father died shortly before the son was born in 1830 in Clark Co., Arkansas. Eli moved to Parker Co Texas where he met and married his wife. With his wife's family, he moved to Brazos Co, and then to western San Saba Co. On my mother's side, my great great grandmother, Elizabeth Adeline BEARCE (daughter of Charles BEARCE and Tempie Arminta PETTY) married first to Dock FRANKLIN. They had 3 children, the oldest was my great grandmother. Addie married second to John Henry HUDDLESTON. John Henry's sister, Mary, was married to Samuel Dawson PETTY, Addie's uncle. I know that this family is from Arkansas. What I am really curios about is to try to find out if both lines will connect. Gaylon
My HUDDLESTONS descend from George Washington Huddleston and Maria Elizabeth Woods, who lived briefly in Caldwell County before moving to Bell County. My gg-grandmother Mary Frances Huddleston Hodge was their daughter. Any connection there? L. Wilcoxen ----- Original Message ----- From: Gaylon L Powell <gaylon@flash.net> > I also have an interest in the HUDDLESTON family.
Greetings fellow list members. I guess this message will not be a surprise to most of you since Maryann and I accidentally had this discussion publicly instead of privately. The change has now taken place--I have been given the "keys" to "mind the store." Thanks go to Maryann Dixon Moseby for her efforts as the previous administrator of this list. In case you did not read the exchange I had with Maryann, the family that I am researching is PETTY. They settled near Red Rock on the Bastrop/Caldwell County line. There are two related families that I am interested in: BEARCE and FRANKLIN--these are two brick walls that married into the Petty family. I also have an interest in the HUDDLESTON family. If you need to get in touch with me, my email is gaylon@flash.net. ******************************* Gaylon L Powell Austin Texas gaylon@flash.net *******************************
Tammy, I'm sorry, but I had other commitments and could not go to Pettytown last Sunday. My great grandmother was Bertha Franklin who was married to James Roden Faught. Their pictures are on Margie Petty's MyFamily site. Bertha's mother was Elizabeth Adeline (Addie) Bearce, who was married 1st Dock Franklin, 2nd John Henry Huddleston. Addie's mother was Tempie Armenta Petty. Maryann, After giving this matter a lot of consideration, I do not mind adopting the Bastrop County list--that is if nobody else has come forth. My focus on Bastrop County is the Petty family who settled near Red Rock on the Bastrop/Caldwell County line. I am currently list administrator for Lampasas, Llano, Mason, and San Saba Counties. I don't know how to hand over a list. Do we need to get permission from RootsWeb? I know that they will need to be notified, but can I just hand it over to you and report it as a fait accompli? > My focus on Bastrop County is the Petty family who settled near Red Rock on > the Bastrop/Caldwell County line. > > I am currently list administrator for Lampasas, Llano, Mason, and San Saba > Counties. You sound to be the ideal person to take over the list and generate some interest. I have tried, but not having ancestry here, I have not been very successful. Let's talk about this some more and unless RootsWeb disagrees, I would like to transfer ownership as soon as possible. I'd like to refer you to this page. You can research any town, county or state in the U.S. in 1895. It is a 1895 U.S. Atlas with maps, info on population (in 1895), whether town had post office, train station and/or freight depot. You can download maps and print them out for your records, also. http://www.livgenmi.com/1895.htm <A HREF="http://www.livgenmi.com/1895.htm">1895 Atlas Title Page</A> When the home page is downloaded, click on the list of towns and cities in the state you are researching. This will take you to a site that lists them by beginning letter. Click on the approp. letter and a whole list will come up. After you find the town you want and get the info from the list, click back to the home page and click on the approp. map. The maps take about 5 minutes download, but are well worth the wait. I found it personally rewarding because for the first time, I could see my Ancestor's immigration pattern. This may help me by giving me clues for looking for possible prior residences possibility.
