    1. [TXBASTRO] cemetery days
    2. This was posted on another site about the law concerning two days out of the year that allow you to visit cemeteries otherwise not accessable during the rest of the year. Interested citizens and descendants of those buried in cemeteries have the right by Texas law to visit these areas and maintain them. However, many locations are inaccessible and sometimes inconvenient to visit. With the establishment of two official visitation days each year, STC hopes to promote cooperation between property owners and those interested in these cemeteries. Guidelines for both property owners and visitors to the participating burial sites are unavailable. Suggested signage for property owners to post at the entrances of their land is also available to help guide the visitors. The first Sundays in the months of April and October were selected as dates for encouraging people to visit and help maintain the thousands of cemeteries around the state which are neglected or threatened. Property Owners Guidelines Visitation Day extends from 9am until 6pm. Please unlock your property for visiting descendants by 9am. If you can"t be present by 9am, please post instructions on how to access the property at the public street entrance for visiting families. For visibility, post signage at the public street access to your property. With this signage please post your name or the name of your representative, and how to contact you. Also, you can state any special considerations or conditions for your visitors to observe. By law, descendants have the right to ornament and decorate grave sites as they see fit. This may include (but is not limited to) flowers, clean-up of the site, erecting tombstones, or even a fence to prevent livestock from entering the grave site. We hope that you might consider allowing extended visitation privileges for major improvements to the site. You can lock up your property at 6pm, after the guests have left. STC appreciates your allowance of access to your property. We encourage visitors to respect this privilege. Visitors Guidelines Please respect this privilege and abide by the guidelines. Access by family members and descendants is limited to the hours of 9am until 6pm on Visitation Days. You may make additional arrangements with the property owner only if the parties are amenable. Access is limited to the burial site and the route to it. Please respect the privacy of the owners and their land. You may make additional arrangements with the property owner only if the parties are amenable - and please do so before the day you visit. No Aimprovements@ should be made without prior consent, and if additional days are needed for clean-up or improvements, make sure that these have been thoroughly discussed and agreed to before you undertake the project. Please leave by 6pm, and leave the cemetery as neat as when you arrived. Leave no improvements or ornamentation that contradict the property owner's stated wishes. SAVE TEXAS CEMETERIES, INC. 1. [TXBASTRO] Bastrop Advertiser articles
    2. In Memory of Mrs. S. J. Walker After an illness of two weeks, just as the mourning began to dawn, a soul wafted its way back to the God who gave it life. Oh! How hard it is to give up our loved ones, but we must look to Him who knows and does all things well. Mrs. Walker was a kind and loving friend, an ideal mother. She was always cheerfully ready and willing to help the needy. A ntrue christian, always at her post of duty. Yes, Indeed, it is hard to give our loved ones up, but such is life. We have known Mrs. Walker for a long time, and we will sadly miss her, and we can confidently say, her labor on earth is ended, and she has joined the Heavenly throng, to forever sing His praise with loved ones on the other shore. She leaves to mourn her death, eight children and a number of grandchildren. May the God of Peace console and comfort their hearts in this the darkest hour. May they turn to Him and say, "The Lord gave and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord." One by one earth's ties are broken, As we see our love decay, and our hopes so fondly cherished, Brighten, but to pass away, As we near the shining shore, For we know, across the river, Waits the loved ones gone before. To the grief stricken relatives the Advertiser extends sincere sympathy in this the hour of their great sorrow, and may our Heavenly Father, "who doeth all things well," comfort and soothe their aching hearts. Another Arrest. On Monday of this week the young negro, T. B. Roberts, who is confined in jail charged with burglarizing the stores of Dr. A. M. Hill and Mr. Bob Watson, at HIll's Prairie, and who confessed at the time of his arrest, made a statement in which he implicated his brother, Jesse Roberts, in the burglary of the two stores. The older brother was immediately arrested, and shortly afterwards he confessed to having committed the burglaries in company with his younger brother. Gabriel M Lentz Gabriel M Lentz was born in Limestone County, June 24th, 1834. He came to Bastrop county, TX in 1852. He enlisted in the Confederate Army at the beginning of that struggle. He made a public profession of faith in Christ in early life. He was on of the oldest Masons in Bastrop county. A chief characteristic of this veteran hero was his keen appreciation of the value of time and opportunity. Lyssippus made a statue, cold, stern, and lifeless, to teach tot he Greek this lesson. This man has made a life, warm, exemplary and energetic. the statue has perished, and no trace of it is found. His life is hid with Christ in God, and his influence will last through time into eternity. He was also characterized by his braveness. He feared not the danger nor struggle of frontier life. The scoffs, scorns, and riddicule of a sinful world were hurled at him in vain when he heard his Master say, "Follow Me". The "hungry wolf" was bravely driven from his door by patient, honest, energetic frugality. The muttering of the cannon, the flash of the sabre, nor the sufferings of war, caused him to falter. Sociability characterised his entire life. Home was to him sacred. The people of God were his brethren. His messmaters were indeed his comrades. His fraternal brethren were to him all that the term signifies. He was husband, father, neighbor, friend in truth and in sincerity. Two children survive him, Mrs. Francis Rucher, of Otis, and Mrs. Amanda Frankum, of Watterson. He leaves a brother, Sam Lentz, of Austihn; a nephew, Gabriel Lentz of Red Rock, a neice, Mrs. Donie Harris, of Bateman; several grandchildren and a host of friends. His departure occurred at 2pm, Jan 6, 1909. His body was laid to rest in the Cemetery at Red Rock, January 7, 4pm, in Masonic honor, witnessed by many friends and relatives. T. J. Womack, Otis, Texas. Tammy Owen Bastrop CO, TX Coordinator Bastropcc@aol.com http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbastro/bastrop.htm http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~txtammy/bastrop/bastropmain.html

    2. Dora, Here is the address for an arial view of Utley or you can search for other places. http://www.terraserver.microsoft.com/image.asp?S=12&T=1&X=814&Y=4174&Z=14&W=0 Also, Union Hill IS on my county map in Utley. And it's further than 5 miles from the turn from Bastrop. Colorado Chapel Cemetery is right down the road. There is a cross on my map to indicate a cemetery. Union Hill Cemetery its after you cross the bridge in Hemphill Prairie (after Cnty Rd 1209 or Blue Flame Rd). If you come from Austin on Hwy 71 east you can take 1209 or Blue Flame to the left, past the Walker-Watson Cemetery (in the woods to right so you won't see it) and it will get you to 969. Once there take a left, go over the bridge. County Rd 65 is to the left and if I remember right the road on my map to the right, isn't there. This is where that cemetery is. I believe there is a turf farm there now. Some workers stated there was a cemetry in the woods but I wasn't going in there. This could be the Wilbarger cemetery as there is a marker on the road the family put down that states their graves were moved (to the state cemetery?). I tried taking some of the roads to the left off of 969 but didn't find any cemeteries in the Utley area. There is also a red brick church to the left on 969. There is a plaque that states several acres of land was donated by the Rogers family to the Af Amer community. The gate is always locked so I don't know if there is a cemetery behind this church. It may seem a long way but the State Library is only about 30 miles from Utley. Take Martin Luther King east. It becomes 969 after the light at 973. Then you go about 20 miles and through Webberville to get there. Gas up first. After you go through Webberville, look for a white wooden house on the right in a curve with a small airplane parked there. This is where the movie Michael was filmed. Won't find the Milk Bottle Hotel though as those two bungalows were put there for the film. 2. Utley is just a bridge now with the sign Utley by it. There are people that live there but nothing else. There is an old church that has been abandoned with a cemetery. I drove by it 7 years before someone mowed it and I saw the headstones. I stopped by one day and on one of these tapes I have around here are the inscriptions. Bastrop is the nearest town, 78602 zip code. Take Hwy 71 west @1 mile, right on Cnty Rd 969 and go about 5 or 6 miles and you will see the bridge and Utley sign. 3. The information below appears to match up with this from the death index; Ed Chambers, Fayette County, 8-11-39, #37482. Someone wrote me that part of Fayette County was once part of Bastrop County. But surely all of this wasn't as recent as the 1930's? 1. [TXBASTRO] where for records of a 1930's divorce?
    2. Dora Smith
    3. Well, folks, it seems that Eddie Chambers neither lived with his family, nor got shot. ?????!!! ROFL! Next thing Genny's going to want to know is, how do you find the records for a divorce in Bastrop or Travis County in the 1930's? The indexes for divorces begin in the 1960's or something in the state library, I think. I know Eddie had a son born in 1932, and he was died in 1939, divorce must have been in between. 3. Eddie married Evelina Neals, on Jan 8, 1927. His father, Washington Chambers, apparently married twice; Bella Cole and Mary Franklin. Washington's father married "Charlotte Chambers". From marriage index. Evelina is apparently spelled more than one way. 1. [TXBASTRO] Waht are cemeteries in or near Utley, and how to contact them?
    2. Dora Smith
    3. Eddie Chambers, our mystery fellow, whose date and place of death are unknown and whose grave has not been found, was the son of Washington Chambers, whose death certificate says he was buried 12/11/1933 at Utley. The death certificate does not say what or where Utley is. It could be the name of a cemetery, a church, or a town. Genny Chambers, one of the granddaughters who is looking for him, says that it is a very small town - possibly not even incorporated. It sure doesn't show up in Yahoo, where one can normally locate all businesses and organizations of every sort in the region. Can people please tell me what cemeteries are located in or near Utley? And how to contact them. We found and used the Bastrop County cemeteries list at the genweb archives, but no listing for an Utley cemetery, and no Washington Chambers. If his son Eddie died only a few years later, he could well be buried in the same location as his father. Washington Chambers died peacefully in old age of complications of a leaky heart, and he was a farmer and a landowner. 3. Tammy: I have not seen the actual deeds yet; didn't have time at the library today. Later this week we should be able to obtain them; they appear to be on microfilm in the state library in Austin. I'm kind of amazed they might not identify the place, either, though! Thanks very much for the map; it's a great lead! The 1870 and 1880 censuses are high on the list for this weekend, too. I'll let you know what we find! My supervisor at work knows about that great stuff you guys have in your genweb archives - she spent all afternoon staring at them! Don't think she found the map, though.
