Shirleen Smith Reese, Thank you for letting us know of your website. I really loved the pictures. For those of you who are interested, please take a look at my website on my Bastrop family. It contains info regarding the John J. Smith; Van Buren Smith; and Catchings familites of Bastrop County, TX. It includes info on allied families as well. Please bookmark and check back often as I will be adding to it. I have not yet begun the pages on the Thomas J. Smith family. Go to: http://www.geocities.com/bastrop52 Thanks! Shirleen Smith Reese shirleenreese@msn.com
Jane, I did see the article and was very proud for you all. I probably still have it around here somewhere. It's important that we preserve the smaller cemeteries in what ever way we can. It's also wonderful that the landowner was receptive to the idea. Texas has two date a year that is mandated by law that the landowners are supposed to provide access to these cemeteries surrounded by their land but they all don't cooperate. Glad to see those that do. I will add your names to the list. Do you have a family reunion each year? If so, please post to the list each year as a reminder so maybe other relatives can participate. Summer is usually the time the reunions go on. Bastrop probably has one every weekend for one family or the other. Wish they were all published. Thanks for providing the information. Dear Tammy: Just logged on to your Bastrop County site and checked the cemetery listing. Would like to bring you up to date on the Baylor Family Cemetery. My Great Grandparents as well as two of their children are buried in the Baylor Family Cemetery on the S. Darling League, which is on the property of Bill Viviano; FM 535, Smithville, TX. A cousin of mine, John D. Baylor of Austin, TX. received permission from Mr. Viviano in May of 2000 for some of the descendants of George Wythe and Augusta Indiana Thompson Baylor to come clean up, place 2 new headstones, fence in and install a 3" brass plate, surface mounted "Baylor Cemetery 1891". There were 13 descendants there to work on the cemetery. I was one of them, and we had a wonderful time working together. Also, we had a young pastor from Smithville out to rededicate the cemetery. I don't have the date of the copy of the Smithville Times, but soon after our work was completed in May, our picture and a write up was in the Smithville paper. This done, application was made to the Texas Historical Commission in November of 2000, for "our" Baylor cemetery to be named a Historic Texas Cemetery. The application was approved and we now have certification from The State of Texas, Texas Historical Commission certifying that the Baylor Family Cemetery is recorded as a Historic Texas Cemetery. The 4 grave sites in "our" cemetery are: George Wythe Baylor (Husband) Born 20 February 1835---Died 7 November, 1906 Augusta Indiana Thompson Baylor (Wife)-----Born 16 October 1846--- Died 11 March 1931 Katie Baylor (Daughter) Born 20 October 1878---Died 26 May, 1911 Walker Milton Baylor (Son) Born 13 October 1887---Died 1 January 1891. Thought you would like to have this update. Beat Regards Jane Beattie Beaumont, TX.

Is this the Jeffrey Cemetery in Caldwell County, south of the Bateman area in Bastrop County? I've visited there. It's beside a little church and is well maintained. C. Ruth, If you have the pictures scanned or saved from a digital camera I would say upload them to the www.findagrave.com site with the inscription information. I'm trying to put what I have on there also as everyone can upload, not just me, and it's there for all to see. If not, we can work it out where you can send them to me and I can scan them and get them online. Thanks for sharing. I don't know about Poe Prairie. Youngs Prairie is a few miles south of Elgin, just off highway 1704. Here's an excerpt from "A History of Elgin, Texas 1872-1972": The history of Elgin would not be complete without the history of Perryville, or Hogeye, as it was nicknamed, located 2 1/2 miles south of the town of Elgin. The community was called by three different names. The post office was officially named Young's Settlement, and the churches and Masonic Lodge carried the name Perryville. The name Hogeye was given to the stage stop in the Litton home." From "History of Bastrop County, Texas 1846-1865": " . . . various notations in commissioners court records use several terms for the area, including Youngs Settlement, Youngs Prairie, Grand Prairie, and Perryville." Ruth
Ruth I do not have answers to any of your questions. I wish I did. I wonder if the Suddeth Meeks Sr. family would be on the 1860 Bastrop Co. census, which Tammy has on-line. Might be worth a look. It's too bad NM has such strict limits on searching for you. Let me know if I can help you. Jeannine
Tammy, On 1850 census: 173/185 Young, Francis 37 b. TN His daughter listed as Pralee turned out to be Paralee. I've taken photos of a number of older tombstones in Youngs Prairie Cemetery. I seem to remember that they would be welcome, but I'm not sure of the steps for adding them. You have undertaken a huge task, and I compliment you for all you have done. Ruth

Thanks for the help. The books in the Bastrop Library were just what I needed. Imagine my chagrin when I found the two graves almost in the middle of the cemetery! Elizabeth Wood's has been broken and glued together again. Perhaps it was broken and lying face down when I looked. By the way, her name was Lee Elizabeth [not E.E. Elizabeth as is listed on the web site]. The "L" had been cracked/broken off. Thanks again for your help and for the website. It has put me in touch with another relative. Ruth Crowson
