Rick, Thanks for the stories. We can trace our ancestors on paper but it doesn't capture the spirit of these people and what their lives were like. Only the stories do this. Rick: Was Beaukiss in Williamson or Bastrop County? I've attempted to find exactly where my gg and ggrandparents lived. I've never been able to pinopoint it, yet I'm wondering if there might be some of my ancestors buried in the cemetery at Beaukiss. They scattered from SC to the general area in Bell, Bastrop and Williamson County, all apparently near Elgin, yet I've never located exactly where. Thanx! I know that this is kinda off list info and please scold me if you think so but having said that: As I was growing up, my family always had a Christmas tradition of making the 3 hour trip up to Beaukiss, near Elgin, to clean up the family graves at the cemetary there. Nowadays a 3 hour trip is nothing but back then this was a major excursion. We always stopped in Elgin and loaded up with Hot Guts and a couple of loaves of bread and crackers. When we got to the cemetary we'd have a tailgate picnic before setting about cleaning the weeds and trash that had accumulated over the past year. We'd then drive down the country roads looking for a good cedar tree to cut for a Christmas tree. Sometimes we'd cut over a dozen trees (they are considered a nuisance tree so no one objected to us cutting them down) to take home to our neighbors and family. There's a lot of good memories connected with those annual trips. The smell of fresh-cut cedar and the taste of those hot guts takes me back to a really fun time of my life. OK, we can get back to genealogy now. ;) Rick Richard Gillespie, DC mailto:DrRickTx@rattlers.net -----Original Message----- From: Jack Hardwick [mailto:Jack_Hardwick@prodigy.net] Sent: Sunday, July 29, 2001 3:22 PM To: TXBASTRO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TXBASTRO] Personal Website That was one of the greatest things my ancestors did for me . . . besides coming from Williamson County ("near Elgin," as the family history always said), doing my research led me to the fabulous barbecue in Elgin. I've typed up many more newspaper articles. I've put them all together since the search engine is working pretty good. The file is on the Newspaper link if you want to go there or use the search engine. Want to see how hot it is here and wonder how your family made it through the heat? Weather alert is now on the bottom of the page. And since we are all bothered by virus, either hoax or real, I've added an interactive map at the very bottom with the latest alerts and it also tells how to fix the problem. This new one is now considered High Risk and could be named anything as it chooses what it wants to be called. I will be updating the consolidated list that I had made in color. It's hard to read in some colors so I'm going to fix that problem. Since I'm working on it, I'm adding more names and putting the source by the name instead of being the end column. It may be this weekend before I can reload each file. Remember to look at all possible variations of names as each index or file I got the information might have used a different spelling, like the census records. We have all been told that the virus' cannot execute unless you download the file and open it, so again the main rule with email is DO NOT OPEN A FILE UNLESS YOU KNOW WHO IT IS FROM. I would add, in this day and time, also unless you know it was purposely sent to you. When you get a file and don't know whether to open it or not, DON'T. Send a message to the person and state you received the file but deleted it. AND then delete it from your email list AND from your trash can. In the past two days I have received multiple emails that contain the virus. One was named DearDorris.doc.pif and today it's named TheFirstSeargent.doc.pif. In the body it says something like: Hi, how are you. I sent you this file for you to review. thanks. None of these came from Lisa. It looks like a real email address with a name attached. One my TX administrator's list they are stating that McAfee is catching it after it is opened. Of course you should always keep the latest version and download the new files once in a while. I hope I can keep these virus' away because if I loose my family file, 27,180 individuals will be lost again. Guess we can kind of get an idea of what the flu epidemic of 1918 did. First the intersection isn't the main one (at least not the main one now), but is Main and Spring street near the old Opera House. On the 1950 there is a Piggly Wiggly on the right. That is where the First State Bank is today and is now taller so I don't know if it was added on or if it was rebuilt from scratch. The one other change in the street, using the picture as a guide, was the new building for the Army recruiting station, on the left side, at the next intersection of Main and Chestnut. The 1909 and 1950 pictures are taken from the intersection of Main and Spring, one intersection down from Spring. If you look in the middle of the picture there is what appears to be a traffic light and that is the Chestnut/Main intersection. When you cross the bridge, from Hwy 71, you are on Chestnut with Main being the first intersection you come to. Turning left and going to the next stop sign, which is Spring St, is where the pictures were taken. So I'd say there is a great chance that the building you are looking for is still there. One thing I noticed is that the buildings don't have the normal raised letters with the name of the original owner on the top of the building, except for the Prokop building. I did see the Kesselus building because of a plaque and the Bruno Elzner building because the painted side was still readable. I'm not familiar with the history of the rest of the buildings, though I do have an 1885 insurance map of the town with types of business listed that I hope to get online one day. The buildings all have addresses so I don't know if you have a tax list or deed that shows the number, you can try that way, only if they weren't renumbered along the way. Tammy: Thanks for you reply and your interest in our Baylor Family Cemetery. Hi, My name is Gene Turner, and my father's name was John Oliver Turner. He worked and was trained to be a "tinsmith" by the son of Ed Bastian, the owner of Ed Bastian & Son Tin and Hardware store in Bastrop. When I first went to Bastrop was looking for the marriage license of my mother Claudia Marietta Nash, the daughter of Emma Jane Saxon (Emma's parents died when she was about three, and the Bastians raised her).Emma Jane married a Bastrop County lawman, my grandfather, Junius Fletcher Nash. I found out there that my mother had been married before to a "Fite". I hadn't known about this. Then I found the marriage license John Oliver Turner who married a Belle Osborn 10/28/1906, and I took it to mean that he also had been married before..... I believe my father was named after an associate of his father Vines Turner, John Oliver Cantrell. Both were Baptist ministers. My father was born in Ripley, TN. 1/13/1882 and grew up in Faulkner County AR. I doubt there is a connection, but thought the story would be interesting to you. I did find out a while back that there was indeed 2 John Oliver Turner living in Bastrop at the same time. Gene Turner Corpus Christi, TX.----- Original Message ----- From: W. B. Hi, all. I also enjoyed the pictures. My Great-great Uncle James Hiram Gillespie owned a mercantile store in Bastrop from about 1860 until sometime in the late 1800s. In his later years, I think he sold the store to Charles Leroy Morgan and I've also been told that it later became Turner Mercantile. There may have been several different buildings during this period but someone once told me that the building still stands. Do any of you recall seeing anything in the City of Bastrop archives? If the building still stands I'd love to make the trip to Bastrop to take pictures.
