Harriet was born in Charleston, SC on December 5, 1822 to John and Harriet Ekells. It appears that she went by the name of “Caroline” in order to avoid confusion, as her mother’s name was also Harriet. On October 2, 1838, Harriet married William Thomas Hughes, Sr., son of Edward H. Hughes and wife Elizabeth D., and they eventually settled near the Penn Station community in western Lowndes County, MS. Harriet and William had three children together (Harriet Elizabeth, Mary Eliza, and William Thomas Jr.). On April 20, 1845, Harriet’s husband William died. The widow Harriet remarried to widower Robert William Scales (1808-1882), son of Joseph Henry Scales and wife Jemima Gentry, on March 14, 1848 in Lowndes County, and they eventually had seven children together (James Robert, Theodocia Jemima, Mildred Ann Rebecca and Sarah Ann Elizabeth (twins), Robert Ekells, Minerva Priscilla Anne Caroline, and Hammond Bouldin). Data regarding the six children from Robert’s previous marriage to Mary Ann Rideout (Ellsworth Poindexter, Joseph Henry, Benjamin Franklin, John Howard, Nathaniel Fields, and Mary Ann) is not recorded in this bible, although it is thought that perhaps this data was recorded in the yet unfound family bible of Mary Ann Rideout Scales. Robert and Harriet Scales moved west from Lowndes County, MS to Austin County, TX in late 1854 or early 1855, settling a few miles east of the present-day community of Kenney. They lived in Austin County until the early 1870’s, when most of the family moved north to the Bosque / McClennan / Falls county TX areas. A few of the older children remained in Austin County until the early 1900’s. The data from Harriet Scales family bible, as transcribed below, is exactly as she wrote is, including typos and grammatical errors. However, to assist the reader, some comments not present in the original text have been inserted by the undersigned, and these comments are in brackets. Robt. W. Scales & [Harriet] Caroline Hughes was married the fourteenth of March Ano. 1848. Miss T.J. [Theodocia Jemima] Scales was married to G.P. [George Patrick] Crump on the second day of Jan AD 1868. Mr. James R. Scales was married to Miss Matty J. Digges the 16th of Sept AD Lord 1873. Lucius M. [Lucian Madison] Waters [Watters] and Manervy P. [Minerva Priscilla Anne Caroline] Scales were married the 7th of May A.D. of our Lord 1875. BIRTHS: William Thomas Hughes [Sr.], the son of Edward H. and Elizabeth D. Hughes, was born on the 22nd day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifteen. Harriett Caroline Hughes, daughter of John and Harriett Ekells, was born the 5th of December in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty two. John Ekells son of Samuel and Susannah Browning was born the 8th of March in Year of our Lord 1825. Harriett Elizabeth Hughes, daughter of William Thomas and Harriet Caroline Hughes was born the 20th September in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty nine. Mary Eliza, daughter of William Thomas and Harriett C. Hughes was born the 9th February in the Year of our Lord 1842. William Thomas [Jr.], son of Wm. T. [Sr.] and H.C. [Harriet Caroline] Hughes was born the 16th August in the Year of our Lord 1843. James R. Scales was born December the 27th 1849. Theodocia Jemima Scales was born in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and fifty Dec the 15th 1850. Sarah Ann Elizabeth Scales & Mildred Ann Rebecca Scales [the twins] was born April the 30th in year of our Lord 1853. Robert Ekells Scales was born near Rock Island ferry on Brazos river Austin Cty [County] Texas August the twenty second A.D. 1855. Manerva [Minerva Priscilla] Anne Caroline was born March the 31st A.D. 1857 the daughter of R.W. [Robert William] & H.C. [Harriet Caroline] Scales. Hamon Boldin [Hammond Bouldin], the son of RW [Robert William] and HC [Harriet Caroline] Scales was born the 10 day of May 1861. Nathaniel R. [Richardson] Crump, son of George Patric Crump and Theodocia Jemima Crump was born the 6 of November in the year of our Lord eighteen sixty eight. [Theodocia] Jemima Crump and G.P. [George Patrick] Crump’s daughter was born the third of March in the year of our Lord 1874 lived seven hours was named Maria George. William L. Waters, the son of L.M. [Lucian Madison] and M.P. [Minerva Priscilla Anne Caroline] Waters, was born on the 3 of August 1876. Baptised by Rev J.W. MacCarvin at his grand Ma house the Apr 11 1880. Milton R. Waters was born September the 27 1878, & son of L.M. [Lucian Madison] & Minney [Minerva Priscilla Anne Caroline] Waters, was baptised by Rev J.W. MacCarvin at his grand Ma house Apr 11, 1880. Missy Mary Crump was born May the ___ 1876, daughter of [Theodocia] Jemima and G.P. [George Patrick] Crump A.B. [Alexander Bascom] Crump, the son of G.P. [George Patrick] and T.J. [Theodocia Jemima] Crump was born January 9 1882. DEATHS: Harriet Elizabeth Hughes daughter of Wm. T. [Sr.] and H.C. [Harriet Caroline] Hughes departed this life the 18th of May A.D. 1842, Age 2 years 7 mo. & 28 days. Mary Eliza Hughes daughter of Wm. T. [Sr.] and H.C. [Harriet Caroline] Hughes departed this life the 15th of June A.D. 1843, Age 1 year 4 mo. & 6 days. William Thomas Hughes [Sr.] (Father of the above) departed this life on the 20th of April in the Year of our Lord 1845, aged 29 years, 6 months & 29 days. My Dear Husband’s funeril was preached by the Rev J. Mathews from Corinthians 15 chap 26 “the last enemy that shall be destroyed is death” William T. Hughes [Jr.] departed this life July the 8th 1862 [While a Confederate soldier, Co. G, 4th Texas Infantry]. Dide in Hanover County Virginia and was buried at Mount Olivet a baptis Church blesed are the ded that diey in the Lord his funerel was preach by Brother J. Mathew. Mildred Ann Rebecca, the daughter of R.W. [Robert William] and H.C. [Harriet Caroline] Scales, departed this life the 6th of August 1854.
