He married a Catherine Oley here in Lafayette, Indiana October 28, 1858. We think he might have not given his right birthplace because at that time you were supposed to have permission to leave Germany. There was a large community of Germans here in Lafayette and a lot of them were from Wuerttenberg-Baden. Thanks for the reply, if the dates fit for his birth February 1855 I would be interested. I would appreciate any help. Thanks

Mike Taylor of Katy, Texas has scanned almost all of the original Texas landowner maps available from the General Land Office. You can purchase maps for individual counties on a floppy or his entire collection on a CD. The price is quite reasonable and the quality is excellent. I am hoping that someone familiar with Austin County history can help me with this brickwall. Background: My grandmother's sister, Auguste Gronle, came to this country from the Posen area of Germany in the late 1880's. On 3 May 1890, in New Braunfels, she married Heinrich August Carl Koehler. They farmed in the early and mid-1890's in Guadalupe County; and in the late 1890's and early 1900's in Bexar County. They always appeared on the rendered rolls for taxes. But in 1902, they were on the unrendered roll and in February 1902, their Bexar County acreage was sold at a sheriff's sale. And that is where the brick wall begins. They seemingly just disappeared. But I have not given up. In the 1900 census for Bexar County, they are listed with one child, a son named Otto who was seven years old. I have now found an Otto Koehler in Austin County in 1920, who was 27-years old. It would fit. This Otto Koehler had a wife named Lizettte who was 24 in 1920. There were two daughters named Esta and Elda. In further research at the Clayton Library in Houston, I have found cemetery records for Austin County that show a Heinrich Koehler who died in Feb 1926 is buried in Welcome Cemetery No. 1. The records further show that Otto and Lisettte are buried in Welcome Cemetery No. 2. Otto died in 1971 and Lisette in 1960. Admittedly, there are always similar names around in genealogy. But this looks too good to be true. Otto is the right age for the child in the 1900 census in Bexar County and it is possible that his father, who always went by Carl, could have been buried with his true first name on the grave marker, Heinrich. Does any subscriber to this site know anything about this family? Please get in touch if you do. Many thanks. Elladean Rupert Chambers Captbwt@aol.com
