Fran Wise asked, "Does anyone have any information about the specific area that was moved from Fayette to Austin County and the year in which this happened." I do not know about the change involving Rockhouse in Western Austin County. However, I suspect the date was May 19, 1873. This is the only date I know when Austin County boundaries were changed. The Handbook of Texas online at http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/cgi-bin/web_fetch_doc?dataset=tsha.dst&db=handboo k&doc_id=23190&query=%231%28The+crisis+came+to+a+head+on+January+8,+1863%29 reports this change in Austin County boundaries which was pushed by Governor Davis and his Carpetbag Republican administration: "Reconstruction politics was largely responsible for a crucial alteration of the county boundaries. As early as 1853 the residents of the eastern part of the county had begun petitioning the legislature for a separate county east of the Brazos, citing the expense and inconvenience of crossing the river to transact routine business in Bellville. When the petition was revived in 1873, the beleaguered Davis administration, fighting for its existence, decided to grant the request by carving a new county out of eastern Austin and southern Grimes counties. The Republicans expected to dominate the new county, with its large black population, and hoped that by grafting onto it a large section of northwestern Harris County, where hundreds of Democratic voters lived, they could pull Harris County into the Republican column. Waller County, established on May 19, 1873, removed from Austin County not only a fertile agricultural district but also the thriving commercial center of Hempstead, with its cotton mill, iron foundry, and rail facilities. The effects of the loss were mitigated, however, by a postbellum revival of both foreign and domestic immigration. Nevertheless, in 1880 Austin County's population of 14,429 was almost 5 percent below the 1870 figure. Black population, in particular, declined some 67 percent between 1870 and 1880, to 3,939, or 27 percent of the overall population." John Sauer
Fran, What I know about this "boundary change" is a combination of family lore and research. My great-great-grandfather, Friedrich "Wilhelm" Pagel, lived at Willow Springs in Fayette County. He became a postmaster on October 12, 1871 according to Fayette County Texas Heritage, Volume 1, page 235. The post office (and the community) became known as "Rockhouse" after his home which was made of rock and plastered over. He also had a general merchandise store. Wilhelm Pagel died on October 21, 1873. According to my grandfather, the post office was relinquished by Mrs. Pagel and moved three miles east into Austin County to present-day Rockhouse where A. C. Surman became the postmaster. As a side note, another post office was established at Willow Springs on September 14, 1881 by Charles S. Zapp and was known as "Zapp P. O." or simply "Zapp". This post office was discontinued on November 30, 1906. I've done a lot of research on this area and the community of Willow Springs was almost always referred to as "Willow Springs" in church baptismal records although the newspapers usually referred to it as "Zapp" during the 1890's. References to Rockhouse after 1873 seem to refer to the Rockhouse in Austin County. As far as I know, the boundary separating the counties never changed. The social security application for her brother,Adolph Gebert, said the father is John Gebert and his mother was Franceska Haase. The 1900 census has her birth year as 1855. There is a Franceska Gebert buried in the Lutheran Cem. in Bartlett, Tx. There is also Emil Haase 1863-1928 and Emma Haase 1864-1965. In the early 1960's, I remember meeting a Aunt Emma Haase that was 97 yrs. at the time. This could be the brother of Franceska Gebert. I think the Gebert's were in Austin County. Later Franceska may have moved to Bell or Williamson county with a son.

Posted on: Austin County, Tx Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Austin/407 Surname: Hall, Washam, Francis ------------------------- Jeremiah Washam married to Lucinda J. Francis Washam were living in Blackwater, Johnson County, Missouri when Jeremiah (the postmaster there) died without a will. Then Lucinda and her children migrate down to Bellville (Buckhorn), Austin County, Texas (I have lots of information) -- and, it seems Lucinda's mother and siblings also migrate to the same location as well as other community members from the Blackwater area. They all live relatively close together. This move takes place in the 1840's; before the 1850 census, Lucinda's dtr. (Elizabeth Jane/1831) marries a Zenas Wells Matthews in 1849; but all of the sons (?/1825; William/1827;Woodson F/1832; ?/1835; Thomas Jefferson/Jan 1835; William B/1837 and Marcus Lafayette/December 1842) are in 1850 census w/Lucinda as head of household. After the civil war, which all of the Washam boys served, none remained in Austin County, except Thomas Jefferson by the 1870 census -- the other boys can be found in other counties census reports -- but Lucinda completely disappears. I have found land sales between the boys and a Lucinda J. Hall -- and, can't find any other information that will tell me about a Lucinda J. Hall -- I think Lucinda Washam could have remarried -- there is no record in Austin or Washington counties. A real puzzle. If you have any information on either Lucinda J. Francis Washam or a Lucinda J. Hall -- I would appreciate the assistance.

Posted on: Austin County, Tx Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Austin/404 Surname: Oliver, Griffin, Locke ------------------------- Joy, I tried to reply to your gracious message about my request, but the e-mail came backsaying user unknown so I hope you see this."Thanks so much for your answer. My g-grandfather Benjamin Franklin Griffin born 1839 and died August 22, 1889 in Buckhorn. My guess is thathe might be in an unmarked grave inthe Buckhorn Cemetery, but if you have access to records, could you look to see if he was in any of the other nearby cemeteries. On the 1880 census, B.F. Griffin, His wife Cinderella and his children were enumerated on June 15 in district 140 in Washington County. Was Buckhorn in both Austin and Washington counties.? In a Shelby Co. Census I located a C.P. Oliver whose wife was shown as Permelia. I wondering if Permelia died and then he married an Amanda or if that was also part of her name. Her age would make her old enough to be the parents of Bertha, Della and Louella Oliver plus the Tillman Oliver if this were the case. My mom never knew her name. The marriage license for C.P. Oliver and Cinderella Griffin must not have ever been executed or it is a different Cinderella. She lived with her son Wiley until her death. In her confederate pension application, she states that she was never married to anyone other than B.F. Griffin. None of the sons are grandchildren know of any other marriage for her. Della Oliver married the E. Porter Locke and that is either a daughter who did not marry and a son, or a son & his wife buried close to Amanda & Tillman. Again, thank you!

Posted on: Austin County, Tx Query Forum Board URL: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Austin?read=396 Surname: Scales, Ekells, Hughes, Crump, Waters, Watters, Diggs, Digges, Rideout, Gentry ------------------------- HARRIET CAROLINE EKELLS HUGHES SCALES FAMILY BIBLE NOTE OF EXPLANATION: The following data was found in the family bible of my great-great grandmother Harriet Caroline Ekells (1822 1894). Harriet was born in Charleston, SC on December 5, 1822 to John and Harriet Ekells. It appears that she went by the name of Caroline in order to avoid confusion, as her mothers name was also Harriet. On October 2, 1838, Harriet married William Thomas Hughes, Sr., son of Edward H. Hughes and wife Elizabeth D., and they eventually settled near the Penn Station community in western Lowndes County, MS. Harriet and William had three children together (Harriet Elizabeth, Mary Eliza, and William Thomas Jr.). On April 20, 1845, Harriets husband William died. The widow Harriet remarried to widower Robert William Scales (1808-1882), son of Joseph Henry Scales and wife Jemima Gentry, on March 14, 1848 in Lowndes County, and they eventually had seven children together (James Robert, Theodocia Jemima, Mildred Ann Rebecca and Sarah Ann Elizabeth (twins), Robert Ekells, Minerva Priscilla Anne Caroline, and Hammond Bouldin). Data regarding the six children from Roberts previous marriage to Mary Ann Rideout (Ellsworth Poindexter, Joseph Henry, Benjamin Franklin, John Howard, Nathaniel Fields, and Mary Ann) is not recorded in this bible, although it is thought that perhaps this data was recorded in the yet unfound family bible of Mary Ann Rideout Scales. Robert and Harriet Scales moved west from Lowndes County, MS to Austin County, TX in late 1854 or early 1855, settling a few miles east of the present-day community of Kenney. They lived in Austin County until the early 1870s, when most of the family moved north to the Bosque / McClennan / Falls county TX areas. A few of the older children remained in Austin County until the early 1900s. The data from Harriet Scales family bible, as transcribed below, is exactly as she wrote is, including typos and grammatical errors. However, to assist the reader, some comments not present in the original text have been inserted by the undersigned, and these comments are in brackets. Hi, Listers, I went through the Austin Co.Obituary board today and removed everything that was not an obituary. (except for Joy N's reference to the indexing of the obits at the Bellville Times.)The purpose of the Obit board is the posting of obituaries only, not "looking for an obit" or "looking for the Obit family", etc. Any queries such as those, should be posted only on the Austin Co. query board. If anyone on this list had posted a query on the obit board, please feel free to post them on the Austin Co. query board at: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Austin I'm sorry if this is an inconvenience for anyone.
