The Archives are growing so huge (over 5 gigs of text data), we need to make sure we continue standardized directory structures and file names. For instance, some will files are named w-r240xxx.txt or o-r240xxx.txt. I know some of you use the "w" to identify the file as a will on your own hard drive and the "o" for obits, but once it gets online, it should reflect the directory structure. Since the file is in the /wills/ or /obits/ directory, it's obvious to the researcher that the file is indeed a will or obit. Using the "w" puts the file in alpha order by "w" and not by the surname. If you have any questions, please review the guidelines which explain the directory structures and file naming: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/guide2.htm (linked from the main Guidelines page) I'd still like to stress using Soundex, and also combining wills when possible into one file, such as willbk01.txt for the Will Book 1 (if the will book source is listed by the submitter). Also, lowercase please. :) There is no hurry to change the ones online now, but if you start uploading them with the correct file name, it will save a lot of time later. Thanks to all of you for your work and dedication to this project. Linda
I would like to point out that it was Linda who said if we put the birth records in the /vitals/births/year/ directories, then the file name itself could be simpler. I prefer the year directory be used. I know that some of you don't, and I have not pushed it. But I know Linda prefers it that way, as do I. And when you have to search through 254 counties (to see which counties and which years have been done), having it in a /1932/ directory makes it a lot easier to find. Plus the census records should be by the /year/ directory, no matter how small. David On Tue, 17 Jul 2001, David W.
