I see no reason to use an editor that has shortcomings like that. I suggest Editpad. I can work with multiple files and do a find and replace across all open documents. I routinely work on 30-40 files at a time. That's how I format the birth records so fast. It will even open the year file. Since I don't have MS Access I open the year file and cut and past 8000 lines at time into new files. I then open the files in Quattro Pro and save them as dBase files. I then merge the dBase files back into one large dBase file. I then use a report form to extract the data to county with the columns the way I want them. Then I paste in the header and make a few touchup corrections and it's ready to go. I did the A-L files (198 of them) in about 6 hours. It took me longer to compose the message that I uploaded. I have opened up 100 files with it when I accidently hit enter instead of delete when I had the files hightlighted. You can get Editpad from the file download section at pcworld.com. Gene

    3. Dear Gene, Believe me when I say that I understand the work involved in the work you are doing, I currently have hundreds of pages in several different countries on various projects on the GenWeb's associated with Rootsweb. I thank you sincerly for your efforts! Those files have helped more people than we even know. I also understand the troubles with the E-mail providers, I know exactly what you mean about these lifetime e-mail's being taken over by another company and the service degrading as a result. Several years ago I had to transfer a great many pages on my Comanche Nation pages from geocities over to tripod, only to have tripod later force ads on visitors even with their paying customers. Perhaps Rootsweb could set up a free e-mail server for genealogy researchers without all the troubles the other providers have, I know the free hosting they have been offering for several years on websites has been really been beneficial. Having a decent e-mail system for genealogy would sure be a good thing, and it would insure having a permanant genealogy e-mail which is something we all can appreciate. It would be a shame to have your e-mail go down, especially when you could not receive the wonderful e-mails from people whom post pages blaming you for the enitire birth & death record project. hehehehehehehe Take Care! -Darren
