I know what you mean. My father's birth was not reported to the state until he was sixteen and needed a birth certificate to get into the Army. From what I understand, no one bothered reporting births until they had to. Dad's youngest brother didn't report his birth until he was in his 20s and he was born in 1935! Of course, that WAS out in the boonies and I'm talking about an extremely poor sharecropper family during the depression. Gina "David W. The only problem is that these aren't transcriptions as I understand it. These are the actual records held by the state of Texas. Scary, isn't it?? Maybe we should be posting a note that says something like "These records should only be used as a guide for ordering records from the State Health Department. They should not be used 'as is' to verify records." No one should ever take transcriptions as facts. Since I have been transcribing census records, I understand why the information I find in transcriptions is often wrong. It's hard to copy something you cannot read. Not only do I agree with Joe Deaver, but there are so many errors in the data, not only typos, but just plain errors in names and missing data. I think someone needs to look at these records a little more before this becomes a nightmare. I can understand the concern of those born during the years in which the mother's maiden name is being published openly. I still don't feel comfortable passing on that information to the Rootsweb archives, even if TXDoH has posted it publicly. Although some may disagree, perhaps the father's name alone would have been adequate. I suppose with all the cybercrimes going on these days, I just don't want to make it any easier than necessary for someone to steal an identity. I believe this to be so, even though I was born after 1950 and my mother's maiden name is not published. My 2.5 cents... Joe D.
