Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, February 9, 2003 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Ted Lawe Program: "Black Genealogy and the African American Museum: A Common Mission" Our speaker, Theodore Lawe, is President of Maxwell Land Development Company, Inc. and Curator/Archivist/Historian at the A. C. McMillan African American Museum in Emory, Texas, where his duties include developing major exhibits. He holds degrees from Bethune Cookman College, Clark Atlanta University, and the University of Tennessee. His program will include a discussion of the challenges, opportunities, constraints and resources for African American genealogical research. He will share the similarities between Black Genealogy and African American History Museums. He will discuss the reasons for selecting East Texas for the location of the A. C. McMillian African American Museum and share samples from the museum's permanent collections. Since the Museum's inceptions, the featured exhibits have included: "A Salute to the Buffalo Soldiers" "Achievements of the Negro Baseball Leagues" "Blacks in Texas Reconstruction" "Celebrating African American Achievement through Commemorative U.S. Postage Stamps" Following a short refreshment period, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet. Larry Oliver will present a program on "Fixing Photos - Exploring Terminology, Sizing and Resolution of Photographs". East Texas Genealogical Society represent six counties which are Anderson, Gregg, Henderson, Panola, Rusk and Smith counties.
