I volunteered to compile info on Butler when Freestone County Genealogy Society began the project. I want to introduce my self. I was born Carlene Killough to Carrol & Ollie FRANKLIN KILLOUGH in Butler 1934, the oldest of four daughters. At age eleven or there abouts when I moved to Galveston with my mother, I started having everyone call me Johnnye after my uncle's wife Johnnie Mae JINKINS FRANKLIN. The family still call me Carlene, but I had my name legally changed to JOHNNYE CARLENE KILLOUGH about 1980. I remember trips to Palestine to visit my Aunt Lucille KILLOUGH DIETZ who lived over some kind of a market that that her husband Farrell owned. It must have been about 1939 as I remember that like yesterday, as it was my first time to see a flushing toilet, electric iron, ceiling fan, light bulb hanging from the ceiling and fruit I had never seen before in that market. If you have memories or stories that were associated with Butler, if it is mentioned in old bibles or journals, any information will be appreciated. I have a copy of my ggrandfather W.L. EDWARDS 1909 journal and he tells of making a trip to Palestine to sell his honey. He took Homer, his youngest son who was about six at the time and tells about how scared he was going acrose the Trinity river ferry. I remember visiting some one there when I was very small, but don't know if it was still a ferry or just a bait camp. I don't remember who took us there, just remember that as you went over the bridge going east that you turned directly to the right and drove down a very steep road. I would love to meet some of the people that descended from that family. Some of the Mobley descent ants are probably still in the Palestine area. Would sure like to hear from some of them as they descend from the early settlers. My EDWARDS was there 1838, FRANKLINS, WALDRON/SATTERWHITE 1850, KILLOUGH/DUNCAN families arrived around 1885.
