Ms. Beverly is a professional genealogist, amateur historian, cemetery preservationist, speaker and workshop leader, writer, publisher and book reviewer. She is well known as an outstanding speaker and we are pleased that he will be conducting the following sessions during our seminar: Gateway to History: Tennessee Research; Getting Your Family Research into Print; Special Texas Collections; and Research in the Clayton Library. The topic "Gateway to History: Tennessee Research" will tell how Tennessee stood on the western frontier of the new nation in the late 18th century. Divided into three distinct geographical areas, people still tend to say that they are from a specific area: East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee or West Tennessee. Its nickname of The Volunteer State reflects the readiness with which ordinary citizens rallied to the call to arms. The gun - the Bible - themselves, have set their way. Be they the Scotch-Irish or the tri-racial Melungeons, the search for Tennessee family is an adventure. In the topic "Getting Your Family Research into Print" we can start with a framework and build on it from all sides, and come up with a truly beautiful picture of our family and the role they played in building the future. Self-publish or Publish-on-Demand, a full-fledged book, family newsletters, vignettes, compilation of charts and records - the field is wide open - and you can show off your research skill, your artistic nature, and your love of family! In the "Special Texas Collections" topic, Ms. Beverly shows that they are many and varied collections but will concentrate on three: The Béxar Archives, the Nacogdoches Archives, and the R. B. Black Collection. Texas has existed as a part of the U.S. for over 160 years, but the archival legacy extends back over twice that number of years. All too often we pigeonhole a group of records without realizing their vastness in family and territory. While we think of these as "Texas Collections" but they encompass "the Americans" and the foreign born, many who came to Texas and many who did not. And in the final topic, Ms. Beverly will show us how to "Research in the Clayton Library" Clayton is one of the nation's premier genealogical collections. One of the 'top five' genealogical collections in the U.S., this 'jewel in the crown' of the Houston Public Library system has materials from every state, most foreign countries, and has many special collections, as well as the most complete set of census records outside the National Archives' Regional Branch in Fort Worth. This session will give you the basic tools to make your visit more successful, and take you into all the 'nooks & crannies' of this research facility. Ms. Beverly's current active memberships include the Association of Professional Genealogists, Genealogical Speaker's Guild, Association for Gravestone Studies, Save Texas Cemeteries and many others. She is a native of Harris County, born and reared in the community of Wooster, which was founded by her great-grandfather. Her interest in genealogy began with a 9th grade English project and have since traced her paternal line and that of her husband to England in the early 1600s. She has also traced her mother's Acadian family from France to Canada, through the British dispersement back to France and into Louisiana in 1785. Registration will begin at 8:30 am. The seminar will be from 9:00 until 3:30 pm. The cost is $25.00 per person if registered before September 1st, or $30.00 per person after September 1st. Participants may order a box lunch if ordered by September 1st, bring their own lunch or plan to eat at nearby restaurants. Soft drinks and light snacks will be provided.
