I will try the Daughters of the Confederacy. It doesn't appear as though Gilbert served as a soldier. He worked as a correspondent. My problem is that I've gone through every federal, state, and ancestry databases and cannot find when he died. This isn't uncommon for people in the 19th century, of course. But, somewhere between 1883-1900 he died and I just don't have the time to go through 17 years of Texas newspapers day-by-day to look for an obit. And, many papers didn't run obits back then.
