In accordance with this Resolution, an "Act to Support the Families and Dependents of Texas Soldiers" passed on December 15, 1863. The Act set aside $1,000,000 annually to be paid the "families, widows, and dependents of soldiers currently serving in State or Confederate forces, or of soldiers killed or disabled in service." Chief Justices of the counties, on or before March 1 in 1864 and 1865, submitted lists of servicemen and the number of their dependents eligible for relief...While the number of dependents are always given, additional information may include some of the following elements: name of the soldier; currently in service; disabled or killed in service; unit; acting head of household." Anderson County's 1873-1875 Voter's Register Paul R. Scott, editor In 1971 the Legislature authorized the Archives Divison of the Texas State Library to establish the Regional Historical Resource Depository (RHRD) Program. RHRD's mission is to locate historically significant local records lying unused and forgotten in the attics and basements of county courthouses and city halls and, whenever, possible to accession them for placement in designated depositories near the county where created. A classic example of the statewide potentials of RHRD was the 1976 transfer of records from Anderson Conty. County Judge N. R. Link and County Clerk Stanley Walton with the concurrence of the County Commissioners, agreed to transfer a large quanity of non-current records to the custody of the State Archives. In sorting through one of the many stacks of unused volumes in the attic, this editor found a list of registered voters compiled in 1873 and updated until 1875. This volume, along with others (some dating back to 1839), was accessioned and subsequently deposited at the University Library of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. Although the binding had suffered some water damage and subsequent mildew, the pages were in excellent condition and none of the information was lost. The following is an edited version of the names in each precinct arranged alphabetically by the first letter of the surname and showing the voter's registration number, race, and any notations made about him. The editor's comments are enclosed in brackets. Precinct 1 Certificates #1-202 Approved at the session closed August 8, 1873 203-265 Approved at the session closed November 27, 1873 266-327 Added after November 27, 1873 Broomfield, D.
