Greetings, lists: At a meeting of the Van Zandt County Historical Commission today, the dedication of a Texas State Historical Marker for John H. Reagan was announced as being set for May 18, 2003 at 2 p.m. in the district courtroom of the Van Zandt County Courthouse in Canton. Several folks wondered if the Commission had knowledge of any of this man's descendants, but none were known. I am sending this to the list in hopes that, if someone is a descendant, they will contact me. John H. Reagan was a member of the Texas militia and participated in the Cherokee War in Van Zandt County and was present when Chief Bowles (Cherokee) was killed. He was district judge in Van Zandt County from 1853 to 1857, served as a delegate to the Confederate Provisional Congress in 1861, and was Postmaster General of the Confederate States of America. IN addition, he was part of the constitutional convention of 1876, was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1875, and was a U.S. Senator from 1887 until 1891. IN 1891, he began serving as chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission, which had been recently created by the Texas Legislature. He retired to Palestine in Anderson County and was buried there. If you are a descendant or know of a descendant, please call me at (903) 567-4000 or email. Vince Leibowitz
