Our Parker cousins are going to probe the area to the side of Dr. John Hassell's grave at Pilgrim Cemetery to see if others buried. From what they told us, wooded coffin buried more than four feet down will not rot. So if there are burials to the side of John Hassell, they will strike the wooden coffin. Report on results to follow. 2. Parker cousins gave us info that other burial sites from ca. 1855/56 with old brick walls was in the Old Palestine Cemetery at the east end of Market Street in Palestine. My mother and I walked the cemetery, and yes, there are burial sites that are not identified that are built just like the hand made brick sites for Daniel and Patsy Parker and James W. Parker out at the Pilgrim Cemetery. So who is buried in these similar sites at Old Palestine Cemetery? I don't know. One such home-made brick grave site is near Jacob Crist and a Quarrles child. It is hand-made bricks, with an iron fence added around the site. No marker that we could decifer. Near this site, there is the broken bottom of a marker propped up against a Winchester grave marker from the same time period that says: died March 19, 1855 age 64 years 8 months 9 days (to the best of our memory--we wrote it down when we got back to the car) So this burial is the correct time period. And this is a person born in 1790. Interesting. Up the hill, there are other burial sites with no identification that are also made with these same type home-made bricks/same time period. My conclusion is that one of these graves may be Phebe Parker Hassell. I'm going to see what documentation from Palestine is available. That may solve this issue--if they have these graves identified. If not, then we should look to see if we can find other clues. Sharolyn
