    2. Scott Fitzgerald
    3. Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, February 11, 2006 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Sylvia Barbee Program: "Underground Railroad Quilt" Our program this month is dedicated to African-American History Month with a presentation from Sylvia Barbee. Mrs. Barbee will discuss the history of Underground Railroad and the belief that patterns of the blocks used in quilts were designed to communicate a code about the route that escaped slaves could use. Mrs. Barbee has used the book "Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad" by Jacqueline L. Tobin and Raymond G. Dobard as a reference. Mrs. Barbee will have a "Underground Railroad Sampler" quilt to display that was made by Mary Waddill. The quilt will be used to help tell the story of the link between the Underground Railroad efforts and the American Patchwork Quilt. Mrs. Waddill used the pattern book "The Underground Railroad Sampler " by Eleanor Burns to make her quilt. Mrs. Barbee has been quilting for over 20 years. She is a member of Van Zandt County Genealogical Society in Canton for seven years where she first presented this program last November. Mrs. Waddill is the wife of Joe Waddill, past president of the Van Zandt County Genealogical Society. She has been quilting for several years now. Following a short refreshment period, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet. Scott Fitzgerald will present a program on "Podcasting". ETGS meeting are free and open to the public. Information on upcoming programs can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txetgs/meetings.html East Texas Genealogical Society represent six counties which are Anderson, Gregg, Henderson, Panola, Rusk and Smith counties. They married in Clay County, Texas 1908. Belle appears as married with her child, Jessie, in her father's, William C. Holder, household in the 1910 Clay County census. No record anywhere of Ben Fowler after their marriage. Little Jessie died at age 3 and assumed buried in Petrolia, Clay County cemetery just a week after his Grandma Holder died. Two sources in the family remember being told that Belle "moved somewhere down south. Possibly Palestine." I have a picture taken many years later of Belle and five more children. 3. interesting thought. no, the only land records I've worked with are the headrights at Austin. no. my branch of the Collins family (the early patriarchal line of the McDonalds) headed for California abt 1851, and to the best of my knowledge we haven't been back-though I cringe to think we used to drive through the "shoulders" and pan handle of Texas on vacation when I was a kid, and never knew we weren't so very far away from my maternal ancestral home. now I'm in southern Oregon, and it may as well be the other side of the planet. I'd love to visit...when the humidity's down, though. my system never could handle that. 3. yes, although inderectly/ Samuel and what appears to be his brother, James R. Lindsey, m. sisters Zuella McMahon / McDonald and Lillie Bell McMahon / McDonald, both of Madison. Zuela and Lillie Belle's (possibly adopted) great grandparents were in Anderson Co. The family went from Houston Co. in the late 1830's to Anderson Co. by 1850, then on to Madison Co. and on outwards. I have found a puzzle with Zuella, her sister Lillie Belle and their brother Tom Green. the lack of the 1890 census keeps me from clearing up why they are in the 1880 census as McMahon's (with the McDonalds a few doors down) and in every census after that as McDonalds. I emailed this list regarding the borthplace simply because I couldn't remember the Madison Co. list eddress and was tired. my apolpgies, and I appreciate the attempts to help.
