The prime requisites for all materials are that they should be as useful in 50 years as they are today. We will strive to publish a variety of material on each of the six counties represented by ETGS. Although exceptions may be made, material relating to our six counties prior to 1900 are of the most interest. Articles concerning other areas will be used occasionally if of sufficient interest to many people. Material from old and/or rare unindexed books will also be considered. Priority will be given to courthouse, Bible and cemetery records, but we are very interested in publishing the following types of source material: Biographical Family Sketches, Lodge Records, Old Diary Accounts, Census Records, Marriage Records, Old Letters, Commissioners Court Minutes, Military Muster Rolls, Post Offices, Confederate Records, Mortality Schedules, Probate Abstracts, Deed and Land Records, Newspaper Clippings, School Lists, Jury Lists, Obituaries of East Texas Citizens, Tax Lists, Library Microfilm Holdings, and Voter Lists. When submitting Bible records, please give name of person possessing Bible, give date of publication, if known, make sure all information is legible and accurate if copied by hand. When submitting cemetery records, please give exact location of cemetery, date copied and name of copier. PUBLICATION: To be considered for publication, an item or article should have a reliable reference and should not be based entirely on "tradition." We do not wish to publish items from books now in print, however, such references may be used as footnotes to clarify sources. Please be certain all material is legible. Xerox copies can be used, but typewritten articles are preferred to avoid errors in transcribing handwritten material. Please include your name, address, e-mail address and day-time telephone number with all material submitted. The editor must retain the right to accept or reject materials and to edit those chosen for publications. Credit will be given to each contributor. If requested, material may be returned, otherwise it will become property of the Society. QUERIES: Queries submitted will be published as space is available. Please type or print each query on a separate sheet of paper. Capitalize all surnames and include at lease one date and place. Limit your query to 8 or 10 typed lines and carefully recheck for accuracy. SUBMISSION DEADLINES: Spring issue - January 15 Summer issue - March 15 Fall issue - June 15 Winter issue - September 15 ETGS welcomes any suggestions for improving our publications. We also welcome constructive criticism. Let us know what you would like to see published. Please send all material to: Scott Fitzgerald, Editor (e-mail: scottfitzgerald@tyler.net ) ETGS does not assume responsibility for errors of fact or opinions expressed by contributors. However, we strive to publish reliable source material, and errors will be corrected when submitted in writing. ETGS POLICY ON THE REPLACEMENT OF PERIODICALS The East Texas Genealogical Society strives to publish a maximum of genealogical information at minimum costs, in order that the Society's publications may be widely available to all who are interested. Consistent with this objective, certain restraints are necessary in regard to replacement of periodicals, which were not received by the intended recipients. Hence, if a member, institution or other organization fails to receive a copy of THE EAST TEXAS FAMILY RECORDS, the quarterly, ETGS must be notified within six months of the publication date of that issue. Otherwise, the intended recipient will be supplied a replacement copy only if copies are still available and only at the published price. The ETGS Newsletter, "The Bulletin," primarily carries news of short-term interest and back issues will not normally be supplied. If there is a special need for back issues, the recipient will be quoted a price for which they may be ordered. PUBLICATION DATES ARE: MARCH 31, JUNE 30, SEPTEMBER 30, and DECEMBER 31 of each year. 2. Where do you live? Try the Gazetteers if you can find any for that time period. They aren't easy to find and sometimes won't let you make copies. I haven't checked Clayton Public Library in Houston, but at the Texas Bldg, Down town Houston Public Library they had five books several years ago. Have you ran his name through THE NEW HANDBOOK OF TEXAS? Have you gone to rootsweb.com and genweb to check the counties that surround the county where you have documented R.R. GILBERT LAST?

I will try the Daughters of the Confederacy. It doesn't appear as though Gilbert served as a soldier. He worked as a correspondent. My problem is that I've gone through every federal, state, and ancestry databases and cannot find when he died. This isn't uncommon for people in the 19th century, of course. But, somewhere between 1883-1900 he died and I just don't have the time to go through 17 years of Texas newspapers day-by-day to look for an obit. And, many papers didn't run obits back then. Again, thank you. Mary Lamonica

I am trying to find biographical information (including a date of death) on R. R. Gilbert--full name Rennessaier Reed Gilbert. He wrote for the Houston Tri-Weekly Telegraph during the war and Texas Siftings (and perhaps others) after the war. Genealogical searches show him to have lived in Palestine in 1876 and 1880, but since the 1890 census burned and he falls through the cracks of death records, I cannot locate a date of death. His wife is listed as a widow living in Austin by 1900. I am looking for a date of death, personal papers, etc. Anything that sheds further light on him as a person. Many thanks for any help.
