    3. Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, August 12, 2006 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Paula Perkins Program: "Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Finding Your Newsworthy (& not so newsworthy) Ancestors Through Newspaper Research" Looking for birth, death, marriage, divorce, shipping lists, train routes, murder & mayhem? Secular and denominational newspapers have been microfilmed from across the United States and available through interlibrary loan and many have been digitalized. State and Local newspapers are archiving and digitalizing their newspapers and have searchable indexes to their databases online. These include wedding announcements, birth, obits, anniversary milestones of ministers and the list goes on. Both printed and online indexes will help guide you to newspapers and locations of where the newspaper can be found. Come find how to locate newspapers around the country locally to assist you in your genealogical pursuits of putting the pieces of the puzzle together. Paula is a native Texan with over 25 years of genealogical experience in research, speaking and teaching on the subject of family history. Her grandmother and parents assisted in promoting her interest in genealogy when she was a child by taking her to visit all the "older" members of the family. In addition her maternal "Granny", that lived just shy of 100 years old, was the family historian for her family and her husband's family. She collected a large amount of material on the family and educated Paula on all of branches of the "family tree." Paula has been the guest speaker/instructor at universities, spoken to genealogical and historical groups in several states and served on the board for several local genealogical societies. Paula was the Dallas PBS television station's Coordinator for the Family History Community Outreach program in conjunction with the "Ancestor" series. She is presently the Vice President of the Collin County Genealogical Society and Registrar for the society's Pioneer First Families of Collin County project and Federation of Genealogical Societies delegate. Following a short refreshment period, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet. Beverly Bailey Odom will lead a round table discussion on "Basic Computer Tasks." At 10 a.m. that morning ETGS will also sponsor a "Junior Genealogy Class" featuring Frances Grochowski. She will present a program called "Who Are Grandma and Grandpa?" The class will meet on the 2nd Saturday for 5 months. It will introduce the participants to the basics in genealogy research including preparing family trees and charts, research in libraries, and on the internet. The class is open to children ages from 9 to 13. Boy and Girl Scouts are encouraged to attend because this program will fulfill the requirements of several badges. The class will be limited to first 15 registered. For more information about this class or to preregister, contact Frances at (903) 849-6608 or by e-mail at frankieski@aol.com with subject line of "Jr Genealogy." 3. One of the first settlements in Henderson County Texas was called Buffalo. You will find it mentioned in the Handbook of Texas http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/HH/hch13.html This may have been in the time period you are looking . Wayne Stafford White settlers moved first into the area along the Trinity River and then into those previously occupied by the Indians. Some of the first settlers were Jane Irvine, who had a Mexican land grant of a league and a labor, and Henry Jeffreys, who owned the league of land where the first community, Buffalo, developed. The town was at a ferry crossing on the Trinity River in the northwestern part of the county, near the site of present-day Seven Points. John H. Reaganqv surveyed the town lots and began his law practice there. The first commissioners were William Ware, David Carlisle, Alfred Moore, Thacker Vivion, Sr., and James Hooker. The Texas legislature established Henderson County on April 27, 1846, and named it in honor of James Pinckney Henderson,qv first governor of the state of Texas. The county was formed from parts of Nacogdoches and Houston counties. Its court was first held in the home of William Ware, and later, William Love. Henderson County was organized on August 4, 1846, and comprised 3,500 square miles at the time. Buffalo was the county seat until March 1848. Bennett H. Martin presided over the first district court in Buffalo in 1847. Centerville, six miles west of the site of present Eustace, near the center of the county, was to be the permanent county seat. James Harper Starrqv donated 100 acres of land in the John P. Brown survey for the town, and on September 11, 1848, Chief Justice B. Graham held court there. But Centerville did not remain the county seat. On April 2, 1849, the archives and county government were returned to Buffalo, for reasons not exactly clear, and Centerville ceased to exist. ----- Original Message ----- From: <JohnnyeCarlson@aol.com> To: <TXANDERS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 07, 2006 12:10 AM Subject: [[TXANDERS]] Re: [[TXANDERS]] RE: [[TXANDERS]] SANDERS, Charles 1852 Henderson county, TX > Hey there, > > Buffalo kept me in suspence untill I spent some time searching Navarro, > Freestone, Anderson, & Leon Counties for KILLOUGH, FRANKLIN, EDWARDS, PARSONS, > COBURN, JONES, SANDERS, BOHANNAN at the land office in Austin.SANDERS & JONES > are not kin, but there is some kind of conection. > > I am not sure if Buffalo was desolved or moved to Leon County. 3. On the TX map I am looking at, Buffalo is in Leon County, TX, just south of the Freestone County line, on I-45. Perhaps in 1852 it could have been Henderson county, but it is two counties NE of Buffalo. You might try looking for records in Leon Co., TX PVMoody -----Original Message----- From: JohnnyeCarlson@aol.com [mailto:JohnnyeCarlson@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, August 06, 2006 9:47 PM To: TXANDERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [[TXANDERS]] SANDERS, Charles 1852 Henderson county, TX I trying to locate information for descents of Charles SANDERS who was m: to Elizabeth PARSONS SANDERS, don't know date or place married.
