    3. Hi Sandra :) OOPS! My fingers had a senior moment. Yes, Lavina J. Snider Neel was born Aug 08, 1817 in Georgia. She married Jesse Calhoun Neel (born in Newberry Dist.?, SC, July 5, 1806) in Tuscaloosa on Jan 3, 1833. My Ira Griffin Neal was born Sept 1835, the second child of Jesse & Lavina. He had 11 brothers and sisters, so 12 children all together. Ralph is a little settlement just southwest of the town of Tuscaloosa off of I-20. It is in the southwest corner of Tuscaloosa County. (At least that is where the Neel Family Cemetery is located... or I should say WAS located. A recent land owner took a bulldozer and shoved 6' stone monuments off the hill and down into a ravine, so the markers are gone. A local resident of Ralph showed us where it was and told us what happened. He said that the man went bankrupt and lost the land. Serves him right!!!! It had been raining heavily so I was not able to climb down the ravine to investigate. I never told Mrs. Elizabeth Neel here in Palestine. It would have broken her heart. Enjoyed your story. Happy Hunting :) Frances ----- Original Message ----- From: <DDCMMG@aol.com> To: <txanders@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 02, 2006 6:23 PM Subject: Re: [TXANDERS] Willingham Family in Anderson, TX > Haha Frances, > It feels great to know that someone else is going around and > around > with all of these names. 2. Haha Frances, It feels great to know that someone else is going around and around with all of these names. My gggrandfather Troy Griffin had a son named Ira Griffin. Ira Griffin was b. in Tuscaloosa, Al. on the l6th of July l830. Ira Griffin died Nov 20, l895 Fayette Co. Al . He was married to a Susan A. McFarline on the 31, Jan. l853. I have read that Ira Griffin was an artist. I do not know where Ralph, Tuscaloosa, Al. is located , but Troy Griffin, The Willinghams, The Poes, The Richards, The Robertsons lived in the N.W. part of Tuscaloosa Co., Al. then that part of Tuscaloosa Co., was changed to Fayette Co. The area that I have listed is where the Old Sheffield Post office was located in Bankston, Al. It is between Fayette and Tuscaloosa. In fact Ira Griffin is buried in Bakston Cem., Fayette Co. I have seen the name McNeil, Neal, and Neil thru out the migration of the Griffin name. From Ga. to Al., I do not know if they were in Virginia. In your letter you stated Lavina J. Snider Nell was b. Aug 8, l870 in Ga. married Jeesse Calhoun Neel in Tuscaloosa in l833. Was this a typical error since Ira Griffin Neal/Neel was b. Sept l835? I know Troy's family lived in S.C. Troy lived in Columbia Co., Ga. near Evens before he moved to Tuscaloosa, al. His first child , :Martha was b. in Ga on Sept l9, 1824. Frances , I have so many names surnames that my father gave me connected his family. The problem is he did not tell me which family. The Cooks, The Willinghams, The Robertsons, The Shephards, and the Freemans. I know he did tell me that we had Neals in our family. Bless his heart, he was trying to get me interested in family history, but I was only l3 and l4 at the time. Everytime I came in with a name of a new person I met at school, my Dad would say, "Sandra , we have such and such in our family". (Being the intelligent child that I was, I would roll my eyes and say sure we do!) Boy, have I regretted that action. LOL. I will see what I can find out and get back with you. I love genealogy and finding connections. I started in this when my daughter was taking Women's history at Texas A&M. I wanted to write a short story on her grandmother Griffin. That was 6 years ago. She loved going to Frankston with me one day. She was insulted that a man said he was going back to lock his car door because strangers were in town. I told her , if he only knew, we are probably kin in some way. LOL Will close for now and will keep your e-mail for further reference, Sincerely, Sunshine and soft breezes, Sandra

It is interesting to me because my gggrandfather's name was Ira Griffin Neal/Neel. He was born in Ralph, Tuscaloosa, Alabama in Sept. 1835 and died in Anderson Co., TX in Oct 1900. His mother was Lavina J. Snider Neel born Aug 8, 1870 in Georgia (married Jesse Calhoun Neel in Tuscaloosa in 1833). Lavina had a brother named W. Griffin Snider born about 1829. I always wondered where the Griffin name came from and how they were connected. Any ideas if they are truly related or just neighbors? Also mixed up in this family are Sanford, Edwards, Latham. Lavina's parents were: William G. Snider & Mary Ann Sanford, both born about 1782 in Lexington District, SC. Lavina's brothers married Edwards & Latham. 3. Greetings, Yes, Clayton Genealogical Library, 5300 Caroline, Houston phone 832-393-2600 has several drawers of DC in Cabinet # 89, upper floor, last row of file cabinets near the windows, down the right isle from stairs to back of upper floor. The TX Death Index is in the top drawer. Certificates are below in Drawer # 2-? About 6-8 drawers of microfilm; all in same cabinet. The library houses all the death certificates on microfilm in this cabinet, with most being there from 1903 to 1970. As we discuss this, more DC microfilm rolls are coming daily, being processed, and put in the cabinet. Each time I go to the library, I find more have been put in. Also, I have been looking for one DC for 1948 on a common name but could not find it, after looking at the index for various spellings for four different times. I just knew there must be one, as the death occurred in a fairly large city in TX, so I made one more stab at it, NOT using the index, but knowing the TX, county, year, and month, I found it in about one minute after I loaded the microfilm on the reader. There is was, but is not to be found on the index. Don't forget to try different ways; those humans that index items, do make mistakes. Enjoy the DC index and microfilm @ Clayton next time you go there. Phyllis V. The prime requisites for all materials are that they should be as useful in 50 years as they are today. We will strive to publish a variety of material on each of the six counties represented by ETGS. Although exceptions may be made, material relating to our six counties prior to 1900 are of the most interest. Articles concerning other areas will be used occasionally if of sufficient interest to many people. Material from old and/or rare unindexed books will also be considered. Priority will be given to courthouse, Bible and cemetery records, but we are very interested in publishing the following types of source material: Biographical Family Sketches, Lodge Records, Old Diary Accounts, Census Records, Marriage Records, Old Letters, Commissioners Court Minutes, Military Muster Rolls, Post Offices, Confederate Records, Mortality Schedules, Probate Abstracts, Deed and Land Records, Newspaper Clippings, School Lists, Jury Lists, Obituaries of East Texas Citizens, Tax Lists, Library Microfilm Holdings, and Voter Lists. When submitting Bible records, please give name of person possessing Bible, give date of publication, if known, make sure all information is legible and accurate if copied by hand. When submitting cemetery records, please give exact location of cemetery, date copied and name of copier. PUBLICATION: To be considered for publication, an item or article should have a reliable reference and should not be based entirely on "tradition." We do not wish to publish items from books now in print, however, such references may be used as footnotes to clarify sources. Please be certain all material is legible. Xerox copies can be used, but typewritten articles are preferred to avoid errors in transcribing handwritten material. Please include your name, address, e-mail address and day-time telephone number with all material submitted. The editor must retain the right to accept or reject materials and to edit those chosen for publications. Credit will be given to each contributor. If requested, material may be returned, otherwise it will become property of the Society. QUERIES: Queries submitted will be published as space is available. Please type or print each query on a separate sheet of paper. Capitalize all surnames and include at lease one date and place. Limit your query to 8 or 10 typed lines and carefully recheck for accuracy. SUBMISSION DEADLINES: Spring issue - January 15 Summer issue - March 15 Fall issue - June 15 Winter issue - September 15 ETGS welcomes any suggestions for improving our publications. We also welcome constructive criticism. Let us know what you would like to see published. Please send all material to: Scott Fitzgerald, Editor (e-mail: scottfitzgerald@tyler.net ) does not assume responsibility for errors of fact or opinions expressed by contributors. However, we strive to publish reliable source material, and errors will be corrected when submitted in writing. ETGS POLICY ON THE REPLACEMENT OF PERIODICALS The East Texas Genealogical Society strives to publish a maximum of genealogical information at minimum costs, in order that the Society's publications may be widely available to all who are interested. Consistent with this objective, certain restraints are necessary in regard to replacement of periodicals, which were not received by the intended recipients. Hence, if a member, institution or other organization fails to receive a copy of THE EAST TEXAS FAMILY RECORDS, the quarterly, ETGS must be notified within six months of the publication date of that issue. Otherwise, the intended recipient will be supplied a replacement copy only if copies are still available and only at the published price. The ETGS Newsletter, "The Bulletin," primarily carries news of short-term interest and back issues will not normally be supplied. If there is a special need for back issues, the recipient will be quoted a price for which they may be ordered. PUBLICATION DATES ARE: MARCH 31, JUNE 30, SEPTEMBER 30, and DECEMBER 31 of each year.
