Through the generosity of members of the East Texas Genealogical Society and the Anderson County Genealogical Society the 1930 Anderson County Census images are now archived on the Anderson County USGenWeb Archives page. They are available for all researchers to use -- free of charge. In order to maximize their usefulness, however, an index must be created and also placed on line. Beverly Bailey Odom is coordinating volunteers to do this simple job of full-name indexing. Others working on the project are Mike Vaughn, Pauline Pierce, Mike Stanley, Pat Skidmore, Kathy Moore Odom, Sunshine Knowles & Sharon Trigg Bragg. We need more volunteers to get this done quickly. All you need is your computer and some time -- and you can do as much or as little as you wish. Please contact Beverly at [email protected] if you can volunteer to help on this project.

“IMAGING WORKSHOP FOR GENEALOGISTS” IS SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 29 The East Texas Genealogical Society and the Tyler Family History Center will conduct a FREE imaging workshop, Saturday, March 29, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1617 Shiloh Road, in Tyler, TX. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. with sessions lasting until 2:00 p.m. Finger foods and drinks will be provided. The workshop will cover the fundamentals genealogists need to know about using scanners and digital cameras. It will be basic enough for beginners, with tips and tricks for the more advanced users. “If you’ve been thinking about purchasing a digital camera but are confused by all the strange terminology; or, if you need help getting better scans or restoring photos, this workshop is for you,” Beverly Odom, workshop coordinator said. Workshop topics will include: basic terminology, hardware/software considerations, scanners vs. cameras vs. film scanners, line art and OCR, preparing photos for web pages, beginning photo restoration, cataloging and storing photographs on your computer, and storage considerations. The workshop will end with break-out sessions covering PAF5/Legacy, Family Tree Marker, and Master Genealogist software programs, and Internet genealogy research. Professional genealogists, Bill Dow and Jeri Steele, will be the featured speakers. Bill has extensive research experience in New York, Illinois, Scotland, and England. Our Parker cousins are going to probe the area to the side of Dr. John Hassell's grave at Pilgrim Cemetery to see if others buried. From what they told us, wooded coffin buried more than four feet down will not rot. So if there are burials to the side of John Hassell, they will strike the wooden coffin. Report on results to follow. 2. Parker cousins gave us info that other burial sites from ca. 1855/56 with old brick walls was in the Old Palestine Cemetery at the east end of Market Street in Palestine. My mother and I walked the cemetery, and yes, there are burial sites that are not identified that are built just like the hand made brick sites for Daniel and Patsy Parker and James W. Parker out at the Pilgrim Cemetery. So who is buried in these similar sites at Old Palestine Cemetery? I don't know. One such home-made brick grave site is near Jacob Crist and a Quarrles child. It is hand-made bricks, with an iron fence added around the site. No marker that we could decifer. Near this site, there is the broken bottom of a marker propped up against a Winchester grave marker from the same time period that says: died March 19, 1855 age 64 years 8 months 9 days (to the best of our memory--we wrote it down when we got back to the car) So this burial is the correct time period. And this is a person born in 1790. Interesting. Up the hill, there are other burial sites with no identification that are also made with these same type home-made bricks/same time period. My conclusion is that one of these graves may be Phebe Parker Hassell. I'm going to see what documentation from Palestine is available. That may solve this issue--if they have these graves identified. If not, then we should look to see if we can find other clues. Sharolyn
Thanks to Donna Bell for putting this listing out there for everyone to use. One question -- Was the transcription of the 1860 census taken directly from the microfilm itself, or from the published 1860 census done by the Anderson County Genealogical Society? As would be expected, there are a certain number of inevitable mistakes in the published census. Most of these bills would close or reduce access to records we use. Mic is the owner of Barnett Books and is a regular vendor at our Seminar. Last year his large area was in the middle of the vendor room. He also writes a Saturday column for the Houston Chronicle. Please read the message and get on the mail list and write letters to let your representatives know how you feel. Otherwise, we may lose even more access to the records. Thanks, James Hollas AGS President ---------------------------------------------------- Hi Everyone: As the Texas Liaison for the Joint (National Genealogical Society/Federation of Genealogical Societies) NGS-FGS Records Preservation and Access Committee I have set up both a website and email mailing list to aid us in lobbying the Texas Legislature. The Legislature currently has several bills pending which seek to close records to the public. Information about these bills is on the website. This website is a place where we can post information about particular bills and how to locate legislators to contact. The mailing list is designed as a forum for us genealogists to communicate quickly and be able to coordinate activities in quick mode should we have to do so. And we already have to do so. There is a hearing at 1:30 or whenever the committee earlier in the day adjourns- for the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee discussing SB81 and SB 85 which both want to close DD214-Military Discharge records in the county clerk's offices. The hearing will be held in the Betty King Committee Room in Austin. Anyone who attend is asked to do so I have included others from states outside the Republic of Texas in this email so they can see what we are doing here. They might wish to monitor what we do or just follow our lead and do something similar in their own state. The website is located at http://micbarnette.bravepages.com There is a page on the website where one may go to subscribe to the mailing list, however you may do so by following the attached directions The mailing list may be subscribed to by sending an email to [email protected] in the message area of the email type subscribe. There is a digest mode at [email protected] but it may be held up 12 hours before being sent. For speedier mail, at least during the legislative season when it might count, I would recommend subscribing to the L mode rather than the D mode. After the legislative season there may not be anything to say on this list. It will already have been said and voted upon. The basic things to be concerned with at his point is about 8 bills pending in the House and the Senate which aim to close DD214/Military Discharges in Texas. Plus two new bills, one in the House and one in the Senate wanting to extend the time birth records are closed in Texas from 50 years to 75 years. Plus a bill wanting to close marriage applications to the public. Plus TEXSHARE/TIFF funding for schools and libraries and electronic database access. Plus HIPPA which I don't know much about but which is expected to go into effect April 14 and will probably close records which have medical records or information in them. This bill effects insurance and medical companies and offices. I remember hearing some people talking about this last week they were not into genealogy. Now I have had someone in a county clerk's office ask me about the same thing and said it may affect their records. So, we may have to address this problem, too. The whole crux of closing public records is all about Identity Theft and the fear of it. People feel that if a record is available for use someone must be stealing their identity. So, Identity theft and how to protect public records from thieves and convince public officials not to pass laws closing them is going to be our goal at least as I envision it. Please pass this email to everyone in every society. We will need some some numbers to show the legislature we care. We are starting late in the legislative season and are therefore already behind. Thanks, MIC -- James Hollas 7704 Evaline Ln Austin, Tx 78745 (512) 280-1415 ------=_NextPart_000_00A5_01C2EDAE.F5E03840--
