Hello List- I am researching the family of John and Helen Mitcheners, they had 4 sons, Olney, Roy, Russell and Lee or lu. I have learned that at some point Helens husband died( TB) and after Helen died, Helens Brother Elton Sanders raised these boys, In 1910 they family lived in Palestine, Anderson county, I hope they still were there in 1920. Can anyone look to see if this family had relocated?? also 1930 census might put the Mitchener s into the Dallas Ft -worth area, My goal is also to get a handle on a indirect ancestor Elton J Sanders/ Saunders, this is the one who was said to have raised the boys after Helen Mitchener, died. I dont have that information. Thanks in advance, for anyones help. Melodee Slaney [email protected]

This makes me sick! My Ancestors went to that church Gladys 6-24-03 By WAYNE STEWART H-P News Editor Reaffirming the belief that a church is its people and not a building, the members of Fields Chapel Methodist Church held services Sunday despite that their church was destroyed by fire. Longtime church member Susie Langston said full church services were held at a member's home. The message of the service was hope and faith. "The building was gone, but the church was there Sunday," Langston said defiantly this morning. "We had a wonderful service. Our former pastor was there along with our new pastor." Fields Chapel Methodist Church was destroyed by a fire late Thursday night. While the Texas Fire Marshal's Office has yet to rule on the cause of the fire, many firefighters involved in fighting the blaze said there are many indications that point to arson. Langston said an insurance adjuster was scheduled to be at the church this afternoon to inspect the damage. "We are going to rebuild," Langston added. The fire began at the back of the church on the southside near a breezeway connecting the main church with an outbuilding, according to firefighters. The outbuilding was saved while the main church building is being considered a total loss. With the saving of the outbuilding, the church's music hymnals were not destroyed. Langston said those books were used during Sunday's service. "We had a singing with them," Langston said of the books. "We had a lot of people there and we'll be back." Anderson County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Mike Link said if the state fire marshal rules the fire was arson, then the sheriff's department will work in conjunction with the fire marshal on the case. "If it is arson, then we'll (sheriff's department) work in conjunction with them to develop suspects and motives," Link said this morning.
I personally went to Fields Chapel to see the church. It was a sad sight. Let me encourage all that have ancestors in the cemetery there to continue to support that area, and if at all possible, financially support the rebuilding program. Perhaps someone out there knows where we can start sending our $$$ to rebuild God's place. Dig deep and help that community have their place of worship rebuilt. I have run across the marriage date for Jacob Morrow and Louisa Box in the notes of two or three researchers, but no-one could tell me where they got the date or what kind of document they found it in. Since everyone was insistent that Jacob and Louisa married at Ft. Houston, I thought that there might have been some records from the original army post stored somewhere.
Gary: I checked in Pioneer Families of Anderson County and it says that Louisa's father, Rolen W. Box, was on the Houston County Tax list in 1838 and was elected JP on 1 January 1839 in Houston County. Therefore it seems likely that any M/L might have been there. Sadly the Houston County records burned. But I would try Nacogdoches County just to know for sure. Jacob Sutton Morrow was on the tax roll in Houston County in 1839 and 1840, so it seems that Houston County was the most likely place for him to have obtained a marriage license. Now, maybe you can help me with a question. Another early settler in Henderson and Anderson Counties was Jacob Sutton and his wife Rhoda Hobby Bobo -- who came from Tennessee as well. Jacob Sutton was the son of James Huey Sutton and Polly Kirkland, grandson of Jacob Sutton and Ann Knox of South Carolina. I understand that Jacob Sutton Morrow's mother was a Sutton -- and have to wonder if she and James Huey Sutton might have been siblings, both children of the earlier Jacob Sutton. I have long wondered about that connection. The Sutton family was one of the earliest in the NW part of Anderson County, a particular focus of mine. I look forward to hearing from you. Have you checked Nacogdoches County Marriage Records? If not try that -- also at the Palestine Texas Public Library there are the Mary Kate Hunter papers that might contain some help on this.
