Article Text: Houston, Tex., Jan. 1.--To-night between 9 and 10 o'clock Mrs W. C. HAWKINS was found dead in bed in her room on the second floor of a tenement house No. 64 Preston street. Her husband is a hard-working man, but owing to the fact that his wife was addicted to opiates and was so often under the influence of such, he had to quit living with her, though he supplied her proper wants. His three sons, the eldest perhaps 12 years old, occupied the same room. This evening she was down town before 7 o'clock and returned home about 8. More than an hour later the children who had been playing on the street went up to go to bed and found their mother lying dead, just as though she was asleep. They were overcome with grief from the shock and soon their cries aroused some Mexicans who occupied the lower floor and who with others living near went up to ascertain the cause of the trouble. The deceased is probably about 45 years old. About two months ago she jumped in the bayou and attempted to drown herself, but was rescued.
