Mrs. SHIRLEY was a most remarkable woman in many respects. She was born in Houston, Tex., in 1843. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. VAN ALSTYNE, were quite wealthy, and spared nothing to give their daughter the highest education possible. She graduated with distinction in one of the northern schools and was then sent to Europe to perfect, as nearly as possible, her musical and literary education. On her return home she spoke the French, German and Italian languages as fluently as her mother tongue, while her musical attainments were none the less proficient. At the age of 23 she married Mr. Thomas SHIRLEY, and to them were born two children, both of whom are living near this city. Mr. SHIRLEY was very wealthy, and immediately after the war he invested all his own money and that obtained by marriage in the Houston and Texas Central railroad. In a short time they were among ! the largest, if not the largest, stockholders in the corporation. They owned their own private car and had the privilege of the whole road. About nine years ago they moved to Denison, but fortune had ceased to smile on them. They were in excellent circumstances during the first year of their residence in Denison. Her remains were shipped south this afternoon over the Central to Houston, in which city she will be buried. Her mother, Mrs VAN ALSTYNE, is still living. She also has a brother and a brother in law, Capt. E. P. TURNER, who is one of Houston's most prominent citizens. The remains were accompanied by Mr. SHIRLEY and the two children. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ TX-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
