He was a New Yorker by birth, and came to Texas in 1835 and fought in the war for Texas independence against Mexico. He carried the mail for the Texas republic from Nashville on the Brazos river to Cameron, ninety miles, and had thrilling Indian fights while engaged in that duty. He was a member of Ross' rangers when that corps enlisted in the United States army. He was elected county clerk after the war, and was displaced by the E. J. DAVIS government. Major CHALMERS was a wealthy and a distinguished citizen. His funeral will be conducted by Dr. KING, the Presbyterian minister, and the odd fellows and masons, to both of which orders he belonged, will share in the burial rites. He served in the confederate army throughout the late civil war, and the Waco ex-confederate soldiers club and the Texas war veterans will march to his burial to-morrow wearing the decorations of their respe! ctive orders, together with sympols of mourning. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ TX-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
