Article Text: Galveston, Tex., Feb. 12.--Judge Simon MUSSINA died at St. Mary's infirmary at the advanced age of 85 years, after being confined about two weeks with a severe kidney complaint. Judge MUSSINA was one of the pioneers of Texas, having moved to this state in 1837, just after the battle of San Jacinto. Thus he came to rejoice with Texas and the gaining of her independence, and during the past half century has remained as one of her citizens, sharing during that time all of the vicissitudes of the state. He was a man of fine literary attainments, polished manners and pleasing address. In the early days of Texas he had no warmer nor closer friend than Gen. Sam HOUSTON, and during the later years of his life, after his honored friend had gone before him, it was with a feeling of pride that he would exhibit to his more intimate friends letters that he had received years ago from Gen. HOUSTON showing their friendship to be of the warmest and closest character, in fact a friendshi! p that bordered upon affection. He ever cherished these letters as happy relics of the past. When Simon MUSSINA first came to Texas, following the bent of his literary taste, he edited a paper, and thus was one of the nestors of the Texas press, his journalistic career probably antedating that of any newspaper man now living in the state. In later years he practiced law, his practice, however, being confined during the past fifteen or twenty years to a single case in which he was directly interested, it being the Walthrus case, involving the title of a large tract of land near Waco. The case seemed to stimulate him, and the recurring trial of it in the various courts of the state seemed all that he had to live for. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ TX-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
